Historic Haenggung-Dong
[Anchor Lead]
Haenggung-dong in Suwon is a neighborhood located near Hwaseong Fortress featuring the road once traveled by a historic royal procession as well as fine murals and unique shops. Let's explore the alleys in Haenggung-dong to savor the sentiments of the old days.

Suwon's Hwaseong Fortress, built by Joseon's 22nd monarch, King Jeongjo, is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Located near this fortress is a neighborhood called Haenggung-dong.
[Soundbite] Lee Jang-ho(Head of Haenggung-dong, Suwon) : Haenggung-dong is one of 12 neighborhoods located around Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The name Haenggung was taken from HwaseongHaenggung in central Hwaseong.
Haenggung-dong is also called the King's Alleyway, for the king supposedly frequented the area. A martial arts performance takes place here at 11 every morning to reenact Joseon's 24 martial arts techniques.
[Soundbite] Jin Seung-rae(Suwon City Performance Company) : King Jeongjo placed an army unit called Jangyongyeong at HwaseongHaenggung and its soldiers trained in these 24 martial arts techniques.
Toward the northern end of HwaseongHaenggung lies an interesting alleyway featuring charming murals. The government's historical heritage protection program had restricted urban development in this area, slowly draining life out of the neighborhood. But murals brought back vitality to the area. The murals painted on each and every house are more meaningful since they depict the stories of local residents.
[Soundbite] Jo Yeong-ho(Suwon Resident) : My story is portrayed in a mural and it's nice and uplifting to see people enjoy it.
There is an alley comprised of traditional craft shops to the south of HwaseongHaenggung. These shops are filled with amusing items made by master craftsmen.
[Soundbite] Park Yeong-hwan(Woodcraft Shop Owner) : I opened this craft shop to show Korea's artistry to the world and visitors to Hwaseong Fortress.
