Saudi contemporary art on display in Jeddah
(20 Feb 2019) LEADIN:
The sixth edition of Saudi Arabia's eagerly art event 21,39 has taken place in Jeddah.
It's named after the city's geographic co-ordinates and offers a platform for established and emerging artists of Saudi contemporary art.
STORYLINE:
Visitors to the Saudi city of Jeddah are coming across a few surprises.
Outdoors, in Al Balad, the atmospheric old town, hangs a piece titled, 'I Am Here.'
It's part of 21,39, an art initiative named after the city's geographic coordinates and funded by the Jeddah-based Saudi Art Council.
Artworks are peppered throughout the city.
Leading gallery Athr has also put on an exhibition with specially commissioned works.
Young artist Sara Abdou wrote a poem, recorded it and used the sound waves to create the troughs and peaks of a miniature sand-dune landscape.
Abdou says the week devoted to art has a beneficial effect for artists, and gives them a wider platform.
21,39 is an opportunity for the local artists to meet people from all around the world - people who have connections with museums, art institutions, and people who have an interest in art, she says.
21,39 also offers the public a chance to visit artists' studios and to see work being created.
Ahmed Angawi crafts shapes and forms that interlock, much like the structure of bee hives.
He is using these forms to make screens that are inspired by the traditional mangour - or mashrabiya screens - found in Mecca and Medina.
His screens were recently commissioned for a new gallery in the British Museum.
I created a workshop in London to make the piece, says Ahmed Angawi.
The work needed lots of studies - documentation and analysis, he adds.
Some of the art is displayed outside in private galleries.
In an overgrown garden, artist Maryam Beydoun has installed her modern interpretation of the ancient tradition of Islamic gardens.
Gardens of Time includes plastic mats made in China which replace the traditional rugs of old.
Instead of pure clear water running from fountains, Beydoun has substituted shattered shards of glass.
The work demonstrates the importance of Islamic gardens in the contemporary era, she explains.
This year's 21,39 includes workshops which bring Saudi artists together with their counterparts from Egypt in a shared studio space.
Aarnout Helb, who runs the Greenbox of Contemporary Art in Amsterdam, says gallery owners are crucial in this field.
The best way to buy them (artwork from Saudi Arabia) is from gallery owners who give long term support to artists and allow them to build a practice and help them printing books.
The main exhibition is in the Saudi Art Council's spacious headquarters at the Gold Moor Mall.
The space is called Al Obour, meaning transitions, and has 25 participating artists on show.

Saudi artist reacts to winning Ithra art prize
(20 Mar 2019) LEADIN:
Art Dubai is back for its 13th edition.
The Ithra prize has been awarded for the second year running, and is aimed at showcasing and promoting Saudi art.
STORYLINE:
This mass of twisting white lines is a mixed media installation which takes the entire Arabic alphabet and flips it on its head.
Called Sawtam, it's by Saudi artist Daniah Alsaleh - and it has secured her the Ithra prize at this year's Art Dubai.
Art Dubai is now in its 13th edition and it's the second year that the Ithra prize has been awarded. The prize is aimed at showcasing and promoting Saudi art.
The winning work consists of a video which divides into 28 screens, one for each letter of the Arabic alphabet.
Sawtam is a word that is a translation of the English word phoneme and it is the smallest unit of sound that comes out of your throat and I wanted to put a spotlight on the Arabic language and how we take it for granted, explains Alsaleh.
The prize, which started in 2017 and announced its first winner last year, is a co-sponsorship between Art Dubai and The King Abdel Aziz Center for World Culture based in Dharan, Saudi Arabia.
The last few years have seen widespread changes in Saudi Arabia, with cinemas opening up and concerts being staged. This in turn has had a positive influence on the art scene says Alsaleh.
This will open up the eyes of many in Saudi Arabia that this is available and it increases creativity, she adds
One of the galleries exhibiting at the fair is Al Hafez Gallery. The gallery, which is based in Jeddah, is one of the biggest in the country.
It not only showcases Saudi artists, but also artists from elsewhere in the region.
Ibrahim ElDessouki, an artist from Egypt, recently showcased his art there for the first time and was pleasantly surprised by the growing art scene in Saudi.
There is a society that cares about art and culture. Their knowledge and their willingness to accept and discuss different points of view, this is something that people don't think of with Saudi Arabia unless they are interacting with those people, he says.
Art Dubai opens to the public on March 21.

Jeddah Corniche|Saudi Arabia| Waterfront|PROMO Video|Tintuzlife
Jeddah is located in the center of the western Saudi Arabia’s coast along the beautiful beaches of the Red Sea — hence its nickname the “Bride of the Red Sea”.
If anyone visits Jeddah, he or she should never leave without visiting the Corniche, where most recreational facilities for sports, enjoyment, and tourism are available.
The Jeddah Corniche — divided into the southern, central, and northern corniche — stretches almost 110 kilometers, with plenty of international hotels, restaurants, amusement parks, places for fishing, picnic areas, a science museum, and mosques. But most importantly, it has the famous King Fahd Fountain, also known as the Jeddah Fountain, which has become the symbol of Jeddah.
This beautiful fountain — the tallest in the world — was a gift from the late King Fahd. The 312-meter high fountain is located near the coast of Jeddah and can be seen from all over the city. It is even higher than the Eiffel Tower!
Along the Southern Corniche, we find a number of beautiful monuments and memorable objects, from 26 bronze sculptures made by world famous artists in front of the Al-Hamra beach to restaurants, hotels, famous fast-food chains, as well as Al-Hamra Mall.
The adopted design of the Corniche adds an artistic touch all along by placing sculptures and other artwork at roundabouts and on streets running alongside the Corniche. Most sculptures and artworks can be found along the northern and central parts of the Corniche. Jeddah is worldwide renowned for housing the largest number of sculptures and artworks by famous international artists such as Moore, Arp, and Miró.
At the moment, because of the Corniche refurbishing program, the sculptures area between Al-Hamra Mall and Hassan Enany Mosque is closed, as restoration work is going on. It will reopen very soon, providing a beautiful picnic location to enjoy nature. A sculpture museum has also been planned.
Hassan Enany Mosque is a very prominent mosque located along the Central Corniche near Palestine Street. It was built in 1984 by the architect Raouf Helmi and commissioned by Hassan Enany. It has a capacity of 1,200 worshippers in an unusual prayer hall covered by an octagonal golden dome.
The Northern Corniche is a strip that extends from the Coast Guard building to Fatima Al-Zahra Mosque, also known as the floating mosque. The Northern Corniche is made up of three routes — each one travels in both directions — that create artificial lakes along the roads and stretch toward the sea.
The Corniche is lined up with numerous facilities and services, such as playgrounds, amusement parks, lush landscape, and spacious paved areas, as well as many shaded seating, walking and jogging areas for families to enjoy the ocean view.
The new Corniche, starting from the Tahlia garden intersection of the Northern Corniche near the Desalination Plant to Faqih Mosque, has been completed with landscaping, pedestrian paths, public toilets within walking distance, and parking lots with internal roads. Numerous types of foliage, saplings, and green grounds have also been planted.
The new area has been refurbished according to international standards. New swings, challenging sports activities, slopes, monkey bars, shaded areas, grass gardens, tiled pavement, sitting areas, and benches — almost all facilities are available for family fun and a picnic.
The municipality plans to refurbish all parts of the Corniche to enhance local and international tourism. In the new Corniche, barbequing is not allowed, but visitors can still enjoy the barbeque at the sea front in the Northern Corniche.
Some areas between Faqih Mosque and Fatima Al-Zahra Mosque are still under refurbishment, but most areas are open for sitting at the seaside and have landscape, pedestrian paths, and parking lots with internal roads.
Another beautiful mosque is the Island Mosque with its simple and stunning white architecture, which turned into peach and cream shade with time. It was built in 1988 on a tiny island just off the Northern Jeddah Corniche. It is one of the four mosques built on or near the water. The other mosque of the Red Sea is the Corniche Mosque. The powerful classical silhouette of this mosque proclaims to all the presence of Islam.
This building reflects the architecture of traditional Egyptian mosques. The entire structure consists of bricks coated with plaster except for the dome. In the interior, the bricks are exposed and painted in a dark bronze color. The prayer hall itself is at the center of a composition that includes the mihrab, projecting outward from the eastern wall just below an oculus, an entrance porch covered by a catenaries vault, and a square-based minaret with an octagonal shaft.
Other things to see on this road are the lakes as well as the water roundabout with Arabic calligraphy.
