The Osaka Museum of History (Ōsaka Rekishi Hakubutsukan) opened in 2003 in a tall building next to NHK Osaka and just across the street from Osaka Castle. The top floor of the building affords excellent views of the castle.
The exhibitions of the museum are visually oriented with some large models. They chronicle the history of Osaka's, beginning in ancient times when Osaka was Japan's first capital city and site of the Naniwa Palace and ending with exhibits on the city's busy and vibrant shopping arcades of the early Showa Period.
The museum's collection is placed on the upper floors of the building while there is a restaurant, shop and spacious lobby on the lower floors. Museum visitors first take the elevator to the top floor and then go down according to the exhibition route. Hours: 9:30 to 17:00 (closing at 20:00 on Fridays) Addmission until 30 minutes before closing time Closed: Tuesdays (or following day if Tuesday is a national holiday) December 28 thru January 4 Admission: 600 yen
