The Hagi Uragami Museum, located in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, was rated by “Michelin Green Guide Japan 2009” as a two-star tourist attraction. Next to Iwakuni’s “Kintai-kyo Bridge”, one of the three most beautiful bridges in all of Japan, this is the highest ranked attraction in Yamaguchi Prefecture.
The Hagi Uragami Museum is located within a short walking distance from the former castle town. It was founded in 1996. It displays the donated collection of Hagi-born entrepreneur Toshiro Uragami.
The museum features art works of Hagiyaki Pottery, ukiyo-e and contemporary art. Among them are valuable Hagiyaki pieces, some of which have been preserved for centuries. Also on display are documents and films on Hagiyaki wares.

Hagi Town in Yamaguchi Prefecture is rich with art and culture. From its Hagiyaki Pottery, highly praised by the tea ceremony community, to former samurai mansions, visitors can feel Japan’s past in this small quiet town.
Visitors interested in Hagi and Japan’s history are advised to visit the birth house of Kido Takayoshi. Takayoshi is an important Japanese statesman who helped overthrow the Tokugawa family’s 264 year regime to restore the power back to the emperor. Once the new government was formed, Takayoshi became one of the most effective officials in the new government.
His birth home in the Horiuchi quarters in Hagi is a simple, traditional Japanese home. The 250 year old home has many small tatami rooms. There is a small garden as well where a pine tree (over 300 years old) stands.

The remains of Hagi Castle in Yamaguchi become one of southern Honshu's best sakura spots, and is an often overlooked gem.
Hagi is a city on the Sea of Japan side with a large historical significance, especially from the late 19th Century. After the Meiji Restoration though, the feudal age was drawn to a close and numerous beautiful castles were destroyed...this one in 1874. Today however you can see the beautiful Shizuki Park with a unique variety of cherry blossoms.

Located on the delta of the Abu River facing the Sea of Japan, Hagi is a well preserved historic town, with its samurai heritage and beautiful Hagiyaki Pottery. Visitors interested in Hagi’s rich past are advised to visit Hagi Museum.
Built in 2004, the museum is centered on the concept of “Hagiology.” Hagiology has many sub-themes such as nature, culture, history and so on, as Hagi is rich with all these elements and more. Within the museum, visitors can examine historic artifacts and view the displays. As Hagi is home to many famous characters of Japanese history, such as Yoshida Shoin (a key player in shaping Japan’s future pre-Meiji Restoration), there are also displays about them here as well. And English information is available.
There is a gift shop within the museum with local souvenirs such as summer tangerine. Books about local historic figures as well as Hagi original items are available here. In addition to the gift shop, there is a restaurant within the museum as well. Dishes include local Hagi meat and seafood entrees. Visitors with a sweet tooth may opt for the summer tangerine ice cream which is supposedly served only here.

Hagi Castle (萩城), built in 1604, was the ruling home for the Mori Clan, one of the most powerful clans in Japan. At the end of the feudal era (second half of the 19th century), the castle was destroyed. Only its moats and walls remain today.
The castle ruins are located in the Shizuki Park in the northwestern tip of the city. Besides the remains of the castle, the park has a teahouse and shrine. With bicycles allowed in the park, visitors can see people cycling around or taking a leisurely walk. Mount Shizuki is located in the park and visitors can climb to the peak in about 20 minutes.

**On foot: 30-45 minute walk from Higashi-Hagi Station
**By Bus: “Maru Bus” West Loop and disembarking at Shizukikoen Iriguchi bus stop. From the bus stop, a 5 minute walk

In addition, other bus lines are connected to the Shin-Yamaguchi Station (Sanyo Shinkansen). From Shin-Yamaguchi Station, the one-way cost is 2060 yen and the length of the journey is about 90 minutes.
NOTE: The Japan Rail Pass is valid on these JR buses.

Alternatively, from Asa Station on the Sanyo Shinkansen (only via Kodama Shinkansens), you can utilize the JR Mine and Sanin Line (transfer at Nagatoshi). The cost is 1320 yen and the length of the journey is 2 hours *

[021]Yamaguchi Shoin Shrine
Nestled in historic Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is the Shoin Shrine (松陰神社,) dedicated to Yoshida Shoin. A true patriot, Shoin promoted forward thinking and was thought of as a rebel by the shogunate. Being sentenced to death for his part in an assignation plot, his followers believe Shoin sacrificed his life for the good of Japan.
The present shrine building completed in 1955 to remember Shoin is located east of Hagi's former castle town, near from Tokoji Temple. The shrine ground houses the Shokason Juku School, and Shoin’s Former Residence. In Shoin’s Former Residence, visitors can view the small 3 and half tatami mats Shoin was confined to during his house arrest. Likewise, visitors can see the old wooden building of his school which houses portraits of his students, who were pioneers during the Meiji Restoration. It is, though, unfortunate, that entry is not permitted and both buildings can only be viewed from the outside.
Visitors can also visit the Yoshida Shoin History Museum which lies near the entrance of the shrine grounds. The museum display important events in Shoin’s life through displays of life sized figures. Visitors can also find exhibits of his writing and letters in the shrine’s treasure hall (Homotsuden). However neither the museum nor Homotsuden has English explanations available.
The first prime minister of Japan, Ito Hirobumi, was among Shoin’s ex-students. Two of the Former Hirobumi Residences lies about 5 minutes by foot away from the Shoin Shrine. Visitors will have a chance to compare and contrast the difference in Hirobumi’s life before and after he became prime minister.

From Higashi-Hagi or Hagi Station, take the Maru Bus East Loop line and stop at Shoin Jinja-mae bus stop. The shrine is just a short walk from the bus stop.
**By Bicycle:
From Higashi-Hagi, about 7-8 minutes

Hagi Town, located on the Sea of Japan coast of Yamaguchi Prefecture is a small town with a rich history. Visitors to this well preserved town have a chance to glimpse a nostalgic Japan with their own eyes.
Among the well preserved buildings in Hagi, is the Kubota Residence. Shoshichi Kubota was originally a kimono merchant. Later generations of the Kubota family ventured into the sake brewing industry.
This 200 year old residence is a very house. There are tatami mat rooms which can be divided sliding doors to provide privacy. At social events, the doors are opened so the rooms can join to create a large space.
The residence boasts a traditional Japanese garden as well an excellent collection of Hina Dolls, typically displayed in Japan in March for Girl’s Day. Visitors can also view exhibits of tools and lamps from the late Edo Period to the Meiji Period here.

Hagi adalah kota bekas benteng yang berlokasi di tepi laut Jepang di Yamaguchi. Menurut sejarah, tempat ini dikenal dengan nama kota klan Mori yang memerintah prefektur Yamaguchi lebih dari 250 tahun.
Hagi juga sangat dikenal sebagai kota produsen tembikar Hagiyaki. Jenis tembikar dari kota ini adalah yang terbaik di Jepang.
Kota Hagi masih dijaga dengan baik sampai sekarang. Wisatawan masih bisa melihat beberapa rumah kuno milik samurai dan pedagang di masa lalu.
Bus JR
**8 sampai 11 kali per hari antara stasiun Yamaguchi dan stasiun Higashi - Hagi. Tarif sekali jalan 1760 yen, sekitar 60-80 menit. Jalur bus yang lain menuju stasiun Shin Yamaguchi ( Sanyo Shinkansen ) Dari stasiun Shin Yamaguchi, tarif 2060 yen, makan waktu sekitar 90 menit.
Catatan : Tiket kereta JR berlaku juga untuk bus JR
Bus Bocho: 13 - 18 kali per hari antara stasiun Shin Yamaguchi dan stasiun HIgashi - Hagi. Catatan : Bus tidak berhenti di stasiun Yamaguchi . Tarif 2060 yen sekali jalan, sekitar 90 menit.
Kereta : Kereta JR Sanin Line .Namun jumlah kereta per hari minim dan servisnya lambat.
Dari stasiun Shimonoseki, tarifnya 1940 yen, makan waktu 3 jam. Tidak ada kereta langsung, harus berganti kereta 1-2 kali. Alternatif lain dari stasiun Asa, wisatawan bisa naik kereta JR Mine dan Sanin Line ( ganti kereta di Nagatoshi ) Tarifnya 1320 , sekitar 2 jam.

Kota Hagi di Prefektur Yamaguchi kaya dengan seni dan budayanya. Dari Tembikar Hagiyaki, diharmati dengan baik oleh komunitas upacara teh, untuk bekas mansion samurai, pengunjung bisa merasakan masa lalu Jepang di kota kecil ini.
Pengunjung yang tertarik dalam sejarah Jepang dan Hagi disarankan untuk mengunjungi rumah kelahiran Kido Takayoshi. Takayoshi merupakan negarawan Jepang terkenal yang membantu penggulingan rezim keluarga Tokugawa selama 264 tahun untuk memulihkan kembali kekuatan kekisaran. Ketika pemerintahan baru terbentuk, Takayoshi menjadi satu dari pegawai paling berpengaruh di pemerintahan baru.
Rumah kelahirannya di markas Horiuchi di Hagi adalah rumah tradisional Jepang yang sederhana. Rumah yang berumur 250 tahun ini memiliki ruang tatami kecil. Ada kebun kecil sebagai tempat berdiri pohon cemara (yang berumur lebih dari 300 tahun).
