Now Korean mask has developed into various forms along with many mask plays.
Mask from 8 different regions in the nation have all different characteristics. Among them, only Hahoe Mask is designated as a national treasure.

Andong seeks to add Hahoe mask dance to Unesco intangible cultural heritage list
안동 하회마을, 유네스코 문화유산
The city of Andong in southeastern Korea is filled with cultural treasures for the eyes and ears, with its mask dance festival and a traditional folk village that draws thousands of visitors and was listed as a Unesco world heritage site in 2010.
And it is hoping to add its famous mask dance to Unesco's intangible cultural heritage list.
Our Kim Hye-sung has the story.
Surrounded by mountains, rivers and trees, Andong's Hahoe Village boasts some breathtaking landscape.
To the north stands Buyongdae Cliff, with Mount Namsan to the south.
Ha is short for river and hoe means turning around, a reference to the Nakdonggang River that wraps around the village in the shape of a lotus flower.
Hahoe Village, along with Yangdong Village in Gyeongju, were selected as UNESCO World Heritage sites in 2010.
Andong's Hahoe Village represents the social and cultural systems of the Joseon Dynasty. The village has preserved many of the Joseon period's unique architectural features, clan-based systems, lifestyle and Confucian academies.
The Ryu clan of Pungsan founded the village in the 14th century and it has been a single-clan community since then.
Along the narrow streets, you can find clusters of aristocratic tile-roofed residences and one-story mud-walled, thatched-roofed houses where the servants used to live.
Numerous study halls are located in and around the village, in places with a great mountain view, to help scholars and students focus, study and rest well.
At Chunghyodang, the residence of a local government official, you can see beautiful caligraphies on the walls.
The stones underneath the houses are thick, to retain the natural heat coming up from the ground, reflecting the Joseon-era appreciation of harmonizing with nature.
Here in Hahoe Village, traditional residencies, pavilions and study halls are surrounded by mountains, trees and rivers. And it's this unique environment that gave birth to creative folk art activities like this mask dance, called Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori in Korean.
This mask dance is a performance that honors the guardian deity of Hahoe Village, to pray for good health and a bountiful harvest.
The story you show may be similar to our culture. But the dance, music and the masks make it unique.
Nearby, at the Hahoe Mask Museum, you can find the eleven masks featured in the show, including the nobleman, scholar and bride.
The Hahoe mask is asymmetrical, so you can see various facial expressions from different angles.
The mouth is carved in a way that looks like its smiling and at times crying.
In the last several years, the Andong city government has been pushing to add the mask dance to Unesco's Intangible Cultural Heritage list by establishing the International Mask Arts and Culture Organization and investing in its annual Andong Maskdance Festival.
If the Hahoe mask dance makes the list, Andong will become a city recognized for both tangible and intangible cultural heritage.

When Queen Elizabeth II came to South Korea in the 90's, she asked to be brought to the most Korean place in the country. They ended up in Andong, where one can see a rather contradicting folk village full of old houses and mini palaces with modern vehicles parked on the side. Talk about contrasts!

하회탈의 몇 가지 특징
Because the jaw is separated from the face, the look changes when the player moves.
For example, when you pull back your head, it looks like a big smile. And push out your forehead, it looks like you are angry.
Also, the lines on the face realistically demonstrate the status of each character.
많이 아시는 것처럼 하회탈은 턱이 따로 떨어져 움직임으로 해서 광대가 움직일 때마다 표정에 변화가 일어납니다.
가령, 광대가 웃기 위해서 고개를 뒤로 젖히면 탈도 입이 벌어지면서 크게 웃는 표정으로 보이게 되고,
화나거나 할 때 광대가 고개를 숙이면 탈도 화남을 뜻한 표정으로 보이게 됩니다.
이것과 또 한 가지는 탈이 실제 얼굴과는 다르게 만들어져 있지만 굵은 선 몇 개를 갖고 그 신분의 특성을 아주 사실적으로 묘사되어 있습니다.
이렇듯이 하회탈 전부가 이런 자기다운 표정들을 짓고 있습니다.

Korean masks have a long tradition with use in a variety of contexts. They were used in war, on both soldiers and their horses; ceremonially, for burial rites in jade and bronze and for shamanistic ceremonies to drive away evil spirits; to remember the faces of great historical figures in death masks; and in the arts, particularly in ritual dances, courtly, and theatrical plays. The present uses are as miniature masks for tourist souvenirs, or on cell-phones where they hang as good-luck talismans.
The often horrifying or grotesque masks were used in shamanistic practices for their ability to evoke fear, and humour, in ceremonial rites. The masks were often made of alder wood, with several coats of lacquer to give the masks gloss, and waterproof them for wearing. They were usually also painted, and often had hinges for mouth movement. Typically one sees the following some of which are designated as national cultural properties.The Hahoe, Sandae and Talchum are all traditional Korean mask dramas of ritual and religious significance. Hahoe Byeolsin gut is a kind of exorcist play while performers wear mask such as yangbantal (nobleman), bunetal, seonbital (scholar), gaksital (bride), chorangital, halmital, jujital (head monk), jungital (monk), baekjeongtal (butcher), and imaetal. The mask play of Hahoe Byeolsin Exorcism itself was classified as important intangible cultural asset #69 by the South Korean government on November 17, 1980. Hahoe and Byeolsin masks themselves were also labelled South Korean national treasure #121 at the same time. The Hahoe mask dance is one of the folk dramas of Pungcheon Hahoe village in Andong city, and dates from the Goryeo Dynasty.
In the first book (season) of the animated TV show The Legend of Korra (Avatar The Last Airbender), the villain Amon wears a mask similar to various masks from the Joseon Dynasty of Korea. During this period, there were different types of masks with varying numbers of red dots on them. These include the white shaman mask (Somu) which had a single red dot centered on the forehead, white bridal mask (Gaksital) with a red dot located on each cheek and one in the middle of the forehead, and the flirty young concubine mask (Bune) which resembled the bridal mask but was brown with a more prominent smile. Besides Korra, there are other videos that focus on Korean masks or similar looking masks such as the Korean drama Bridal Mask (Gaksital) and the super villain movie Suicide Squad. In this TV show, the hero hides his identity from evil forces by wearing a bridal mask. The drama is set during the colonial period in Korea (Japanese occupation) and focuses on the struggles and heroics of various characters. Also, a mysterious woman wearing a mask very similar to a Somu mask appears in some scenes of the movie Suicide Squad.

Traditional Korean Hahoe masks at Suwon
The museum of traditional Korean Hahoe masks in Suwon, South Korea, shows how these beautiful wooden masks are made and used. Usually made from alder wood, they are painted or lacquered and were used in ceremonies, wars, Palace courts, to ward off spirits and in plays. In some the mouth is hinged for movement. Andong Hahoe Village has preserved the housing architecture and the village structure of the Joseon Dynasty. Moreover, the village was not artificially created; there are people who actually live there.
Three sides of Hahoe Village is surrounded by the Nakdong River. Because the river swirls around the village, the village is named Hahoe, and is also called the spinning river village.
This village became known to the public by a Confucian scholar of the Joseon Dynasty (1392~1910), Gyeomam Ryu Unryong (1539~1601) and Seoae Ryu Seongryong (1542~1607) who had done great deeds during the Imjin War(Japanese Invasion in 1592).
Because the village is surrounded by mountains and water, it had never been invaded. This is the reason why these houses still remain in their original structures.
There are 176 families in the village and they are known as the group village of the Pungsan Ryu family. There are houses designated as National treasures.
Hahoe Village is also famous for the Byeolsin exorcism, maskdance and Hahoe mask. The Hahoe mask is the oldest mask in Korea and is used in the Hahoe Maskdance. Hahoe Village became famous from the visit of Queen Elizabeth in 1999.

Hahoe Village is a 600-year-old clan-based community. People here live by the moral codes of Confucianism. Patrick Zachmann captures the entire process of a solemn and dignified memorial service at the main family home of the Ryu clan. See how the ceremony conveys Koreans' respect for their ancestors and filial love.
Seowon are traditional schools established by students to commemorate their teacher. Patrick Zachmann is invited to one of the seowon to observe a two-day memorial service. Follow Patrick as he explores how the students of a 16th-century scholar are still honoring his memory and teachings.
Patrick Zachmann hears the story of how a family disassembled a 500-year-old house to save the old home from being flooded and put them back together piece by piece over 40 years. He also meets a Korean-American bride and an American groom getting married in a Korean traditional wedding ceremony.

The first travel destination of Korean Idol Simba and Vietnamese model Chau is Andong. Their journey begins at the Woryeonggyo Bridge which is known to be the longest footbridge made of wood in Korea. The legend behind this bridge is that if you cross the bridge holding hands you will not break up with your lover. Despite communication difficulty, they do their best to communicate by using body language and little bit of English. Then they quickly move to Hahoe Folk Village, the birthplace of mask. Simba and Chau visit and meet Hahoe mask dance artisan and Seonadang where play was used to be performed in the past. Not only the Hahoe mask and other stories and scenes but also they start to get to know each other.
From Mungyeongsaejae where bird finds the crossing difficult to Cheong-do where Wine Tunnel and Provence are.
Mungyeongsaejae is well-known as a mountain pass where scholars used to go through for the government official examination and Mungyeongsaejae Open Set was created and used for a variety of historical publications. Simba and Chau is having a good time enjoying flogging experience and king and queen makeover. Next destination is Cheong-do. An old tunnel was renovated and refurbished into a wine cellar. They taste the persimmon wine, a local specialty. In Provence, which is a perfect place to take pictures because of beautiful night view, they keep the great memory of Gyeonsangbuk-do Cheong-do in their minds.
Go to Gyeongju, the heart of Silla culture where Bulguksa Temple, Cheomseongdae Observatory, Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond and Expo are
The capital of Silla - Seorabeol. This city, now named Gyeonju, is the living evidence of history and culture of Silla. Bulguksa Temple where Buddha's mercy is preserved, and Cheomseongdae observatory, the oldest astronomical observatory in the East. Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond with full of beautiful pond and building. The cultural expo was added to a such historical land and Gyeongju is now reformed as the heart of culture that crosses between past and present. The journey of Simba and Chau that goes around these places now shines brighter.

옛날 과거 시험을 보러가는 선비들이 넘나들며 유명해진 고개 문경새재. 각종 사극 드라마의 세트장으로도 유명한 이곳에서 심바와 짜우도 왕과 왕비로 변신해보기도 하고 곤장 체험도 하며 즐거운 한 때를 보낸다. 다음 목적지는 청도. 오래된 터널을 개조해 와인저장고로 재탄생한 와인터널에 들러 향기 그윽한 특산품 감 와인도 맛보고, 야경이 아름다워 사진 찍기에 안성맞춤인 청도 프로방스에서는 서로의 모습을 담으며 아름다운 경북 청도에서의 추억들을 새긴다.
불국사, 첨성대, 동궁과 월지 그리고 엑스포가 있는 신라 문화의 심장, 경주에 가다
