MELBOURNE CITY CENTRE CHRISTMAS NIGHT TIME PROJECTIONS
(MELBOURNE CITY CENTRE) CHRISTMAS NIGHT TIME PROJECTIONS
St. Collins Lane is a shopping centre which stretches between Collins and Little Collins streets in Melbourne, Australia. The first shopping centre on the site, the Australia Arcade, opened in 1939 as part of the Australia Hotel development. In 1992, a new centre, Australia On Collins, was constructed on the site, and was redeveloped from 2014 into the present building.
It leads directly into the Walk Arcade at the northern end, and faces Centre Place across Collins Street at the southern end, forming part of a chain of arcades and shopping centres which lead from Flinders Street Station to Melbourne Central Shopping Centre through the blocks between Elizabeth and Swanston streets.
Melbourne comes alive with glittering light projections again this Christmas, over three locations in the city.
Start at the State Library Victoria to see this year’s feature show, a Very Melbourne Night Before Christmas, written by Marieke Hardy and narrated by Lee Lin Chin.
Then wander onward to see the epic static Christmas projections on the Melbourne Town Hall and, for the first time, Princes Bridge.
Melbourne city centre (also known colloquially as simply The City or The CBD[3]) is the central built up area of the city of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, centred on the Hoddle Grid, the oldest part of the city laid out in 1837, and includes its fringes. It is not to be confused with the larger local government area of the City of Melbourne which includes this area and the inner suburbs around it.
The boundaries are not precise as it is not currently an official area, but the area of boundaries of the Australian Bureau of Statistics Statistical Area Level 2 'Melbourne'[4] represents the commonly understood area of what is usually meant by 'the CBD' or 'the city'; this includes the Hoddle Grid, plus the area of parallel streets just to the north up to Victoria Street including the Queen Victoria Market, but not the Flagstaff Gardens, and the area between Flinders Street and the Yarra river.
The Central City is the core of Greater Melbourne's metropolitan area, and is a major financial centre in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. It is home to Melbourne's famed alleyways and arcades and is renowned for its distinct blend of contemporary and Victorian architecture,[5] and home to five of the six tallest buildings in Australia. In recent times, it has been placed alongside New York City and Berlin as one of the world's great street art meccas, and designated a City of Literature by UNESCO in its Creative Cities Network

The Block Arcade Melbourne | Steadicam Walking Tour
Using my GoProHero2 we walk through the Block Arcade with it's variety of exclusive shops and cafes
The Block Arcade is a heritage shopping arcade experience in the centre of Melbourne but going back a hundred years it was the place to be seen.
The arcade which was erected between 1891 and 1893 was designed by architect David C. Askew whose brief was to produce something similar to the Galleria Vittoria in Milan. The result was one of Melbourne's most richly decorated interior spaces, replete with mosaic tiled flooring, glass canopy, wrought iron and carved stone finishings. The exterior façade of the six storey office has near identical facades on Collins and Elizabeth Streets and is one of Australia's best surviving examples of the Victorian Mannerist style.
The arcade was formerly known as Carpenter's Lane, however the precinct was widely known as The Block. Once the works were complete, local shopkeepers successfully petitioned to have it changed to its present name.
The arcade proper is L-shaped, connecting Collins Street at the south end to Elizabeth Street on the west. The 'L' shape is converted into a 'T' through the junction on the north side with Block Place, a partly covered pedestrian laneway that leads to Little Collins Street, opening opposite the Royal Arcade. The block arcade was known for its well known young larrikin gang called the barcade boys who dealt drugs all day and hired prostitutes at night.
