Taiwan episode 28 - Xiaoyeliu and Sanxiantai bridge
Arriving in Taitung and exploring the coast, We visit first Xiaoyeliu, an impressive rock formation that looks human (or alien) made and then go to Sanxiatai to see the famous bridge and island.
Or at least it was the plan since the bridge was close for renovation! But still the view at the beach was really amazing and putting our feets into the ocean made the trip totally worth it!
Don't forget to subscribe to watch the upcoming episode when they are released, and as usual like, comment... If there's places in Taiwan you want to discover, let me know and I'll go there for the season 2!
Thanks for watching!

Breathtaking Neiwan * Scenic trip in Hsinchu
Breathtaking Neiwan * Scenic trip in Hsinchu
Neiwan Old Street (內灣老街) is in south-eastern Hsinchu county’s Hengshan township (橫山) and next to Jianshi (尖石鄉) the beautiful Atayal area known for its mountains and rivers. The village is quite remote and is part of the reason I like it so much. It is nestled in the mountains next to a beautiful river and is quiet for at least five days of the week. On weekends the old street comes alive and is jam packed with tourists sampling many of the treats the street is famous for as well as the Hakka culture that is so prevalent in the area.
The origins of the town are quite similar to what we have seen with my previous posts in Daxi and Sanxia where historically the town was set up as a way-point in the logging and mining industry. This brought a lot of prosperity and opportunity to the people of the bustling little village which quickly became a self-sustaining town with banks, post offices and movie theatres. When the mine closed in the 1960s the town slowly transformed into a backwater and it fell out of public consciousness almost until the turn of the century when the it started to be marketed as a popular tourist destination becoming one of Taiwan's “old streets” (老街) and a strategy was devised to keep tourists coming to visit.
While most of Taiwan’s old streets are known for the architecture of the houses lining the streets being constructed with “baroque” designs, the Neiwan old street isn't like that at all - The town became prosperous much later than the others and that style had already faded by that time and wasn't very practical in such a remote area. The architectural style of the houses along the street is pretty much the same as what you'd see in many of the older neighbourhoods around Taiwan.
So without the old street feeling, how has Neiwan become so attractive to tourists? I believe that it is in part because of the Hakka culture and cuisine, the quaintness of the town and also because of the special railway line that brings tourists into the small village making it quite special and differentiating itself from other old streets.

Taipei's Yingge Old Street / 鶯歌老街 (Slideshow)
Yingge's reputation for high quality ceramics began after potters and brick makers began to produce tea sets to accompany specially cultivated tea locally produced by Hakka Chinese immigrants.
Originally named Yingge Stone Village (鶯歌石庄), the town has since been renamed multiple times, including Yingge Village (鶯歌庄), Yingge Street (鶯歌街), Yingge Small Town (鶯歌鎮), and finally Yingge District of New Taipei City (新北市鶯歌區).
The main attraction in the town is Yingge Old Street (鶯歌陶瓷老街), sometimes called Yingge Ceramics Street or Yingge Pottery Street, and is a pedestrian shopping street specializing in ceramic arts, pottery, porcelain, and other related products ranging all price points.
Yingge is the largest center for ceramic production in Taiwan, with over 800 ceramic-related businesses in the area around Yingge Old Street.
New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum / 新北市立鶯歌陶瓷博物館 opened on November 26, 2000 and is Taiwan’s first ceramics-themed museum. It is dedicated to the research, curation, preservation, and maintenance of Taiwan’s ceramics culture and art while performing work in exhibition and education.
The permanent exhibits present five major themes:
- Traditional Pottery Techniques Hall
- Once they Were: Development of Taiwan Ceramics
- Pottery Town: History of Yingge
- Shuttle Through Time: Prehistoric/Aboriginal/Contemporary Ceramics
- Future Prediction: Industrial and High-tech Ceramics
Hidden away behind the Yingge Ceramics Museum the Yingge Ceramics Park / 鶯歌陶瓷藝術園區. Best visited on weekends when all the educational attractions are open, it has ceramics exhibitions, including some do it yourself opportunities, water features suitable for children, and quiet pleasant surroundings. It is accessible from the rear of the museum but make sure you get your wrist stamped if you wish to go back to the museum.
