Mount Hakkoda (八甲田山, Hakkōdasan) is a set of volcanic peaks in Aomori Prefecture located between Aomori City and Lake Towada. Included among Japan's 100 Famous Mountains, Mount Hakkoda is known for its seasonal beauty which includes nature, hiking and famous hot springs. In addition, the 1585 meter high mountain is one of the first places in the Tohoku Region to develop autumn colors each year. The colors usually start appearing at the summit around late September and reach the base of the mountain by mid October.

What a great way to spend New Year's Day in Northern Japan! My friend and frequent hiking partner Richard picked me up in Aomori and we headed to the Hakkoda Ropeway for a short but fun snowshoe hike to start the year. The weather was decent, and the crowds were still either drunk or hung over so we were able to pound down some fresh tracks in the powder. The video is a bit short because my camcorder battery got a bit too cold and died on me.

June 7th 2015. Day hike of the Hakkoda Mountains in Aomori, Japan. Cheated a little and took the rope way car half way up. First GoPro video and I didn't have a mount so it's extremely shaky.
