HOKKAIDO TREASURE! Goryokaku Fort in Hakodate, Japan (vlog-5)
HAKODATE MAGISTRATE'S OFFICE
Hakodate magistrates office was established here in Hakodate by the Edo Shogunate when the port of Hakodate opened under the Japan-US treaty of Peace and Amity. The office was initially built at the foot of Mt. Hakodate . However , when it's location was regarded disadvantageous for defence. They decided to move the office further inland. In order to guard the new magistrate's office, western-style earthworks were contrived by a Dutch Scholar Takeda Ayasaburo and the Fort came to be known as Goryokaku due to its star-pentagonal configuration.

Japan Trip 2019: Hakodate (4K 60FPS)
Chapter 7: Hakodate
We've finally arrived in Hokkaido! It was a beautiful sunny day in Hakodate, and we did a lot of things in just one day! A common theme you'll see when reaching the north of Japan is that the biggest cities are usually close to the sea. The reason is because most of them were involved in large export trade in the past. The harbour of Hakodate was one of the first to be opened to foreign trade after Japan's era of isolation had come to an end. This also means they have many markets!
Speaking of which, the first place we went to was the Hakodate Morning Market. Just like in Aomori, every morning the market is opened to the public with street vendors offering fresh fish, crab, squid and many fruits like melons! I bought some squid jerky fresh from the market, and it definitely tasted a lot better than what you get in convenience stores around Japan!
After taking a nice walk around the market, we went to the famous Red Brick Warehouses, which are buildings from the past trading days now turned into a dining and shopping complex. I might have bought a few souvenirs there, hehe!
As previously mentioned, Hakodate was one of the first harbour to be opened to foreign trade. This caused traders from Russia and many other Western countries to move to Hakodate. The residential area known as Motomachi came to be! Foreign-looking buildings can be found here, like churches of all things! The most beautiful was the Russian Orthodox Church. The skyline from Motomachi was quite special!
Next, we took the tram to get to Fort Goryokaku, the last western style Japanese fortress in the country. It has a special star shape, and as you'll see in the video, I walked around most of it. It was a peaceful walk that leads to the center of the fortress where the rebuilt Former Magistrate Office stands. It was the base of operation for former shogunate officers against the newly formed government at the time, and as you'd expect, just like in Aizu, they tried to fight back! Lots of history here that's for sure. We decided to get a nice view of the whole fortress from Goryokaku Tower. For just a few yen, you can get to the top of the tower and see all its glory. Extra bonus: you also get a magnificent of the city!
Finally, the last stop of the day was a visit to Mount Hakodate via ropeway, oh my! It is a popular attraction because you get to see a night view of the city from the observation platforms. I've arrived just before sunset, and it was very special because while the sky was clear blue on one side, it was orangeish on the other! The view from the top was incredible! I wish I could have stayed very late, but I had a bullet train to catch!
Thanks a lot for watching, this was a very fun video to make and every time I watch it, I wish I could still be there! The next and final destination to my trip is Sapporo, let's go!

Japan Travel: Fort Goryokaku Magistrate’s Office in Edo era Hakodate,Hokkaido52 Moopon
Fort Goryokaku (五稜郭) is a star shaped, Western style citadel. This massive fortress was built in the last years of the Edo Period for the defense of Hakodate against the imperialist threat posed by the Western powers. A few years later, the fort became the site of a civil war between an army of the shogunate and the superior troops of the newly established Meiji government(Boshin War,戊辰戦争).
After the fort had lost its military importance, it was eventually became a public park in the 1914. More than one thousand cherry trees were planted along its moats, making it one of Hokkaido's best cherry blossom spots. The peak of the blooming season usually takes place around early May.
There stands the Former Magistrate Office in the center of the fort. The original building was tore down after the fall of the shogunate in 1871, but the city carefully reconstructed a part of the complex and opened it to the public in 2010.

Tourist Attractions in Hakodate (Hokkaido) during Winter in Japan
A snow filled tour of the tourist attractions in Hakodate (Hokkaido) during Winter in Japan. Full list here where we arrive from Honshu by JR train.
1. The Morning Market - We start at the Hakodate Asaichi which would be the nearest tourist attractions in Hakodate found next to the main train station. This market runs between 06:00AM and 12:00PM daily, and is pretty much just fish and seafood
2. The Trams - The trams in Hakodate are an attraction in themselves, and they easy to use, where they circle the city in each direction, the red line going in one direction, and the blue line travelling in the opposite.
3. Goryōkaku Park - This is more or less an ancient fortress and is now a Special Historical Site, and home to the Hakodate city museum and old Hakodate Magistrate’s Office. Otherwise it’s just a really nice park to explore.
4. Goryōkaku Tower - Found next to the park, the observation deck which shares views over the star-shaped fort, and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, and seas.

Pasensyahan Friends Goes to Japan - S01E05 - Hakodate
From Aomori we went to Hakodate via Japan’s newest high speed railway, Hokkaido Shinkansen. It had its maiden voyage last March 26, 2016. It connects the northernmost part of Honshu to Hokkaido. The train passes through the Seikan Undersea Tunnel one of the world’s deepest and longest. We also went to HakodateYama. On a clear day or night, the amazing view is considered one of Japan’s best along side with Rokko Mountain’s view of Kobe and Mt. Inasa’s of Nagasaki. The view is best 30mins after sunset or in photography known as the blue hour. The following day, we went to Fort Goryokaku. Fort Goryokaku is Japan’s first western-style fort. It is shaped like a star which was built to defend Hakodate during the Edo period. Eventually, the fort lost its military purpose and was turned into a park where over 1000 sakura trees were planted along the massive moat. It is considered as the one of the best Cherry blossom Spots in Hokkaido.

Matsumae (松前) is a former castle town just west of Cape Shirakami(白神岬),which is the southernmost point of Hokkaido. There is only 20 kilometers across the Tsugaru Strait from Aomori. Matsumae was the northern limit of Japan during the Edo Period and the sole feudal fief on the otherwise wild, untamed frontier of Hokkaido. The thriving, 30,000 person town attracted merchants engaged in the shipping trade, and was protected by a garrison at Matsumae Castle, which was the only Japanese style castle to have been built on Hokkaido.
Built on a hillside advantage point, Matsumae Castle cemented a foothold on Hokkaido from where to use the island's abundant natural resources. Toward the end of the Edo Period, the castle was equipped with cannon to counter the threat of foreign ships. As with many Japanese castles, Matsumae Castle's original keep was destroyed some times over the centuries. The current three story high structure is a modern concrete reconstruction from the early 1960s which houses a local history museum displaying a collection of artifacts of the local Matsumae clan, including some items related to the Ainu people.

Matsumaehan Yashiki (松前藩屋敷) is a small historical theme park that recreates Matsumae Town like it used to be in the Edo Period. There are 14 buildings including merchant houses, a magistrates office, a guard station and a shipping agent. Some of the buildings can be entered and display life sized mannequins. Visitors can also rent period costume to wear(with a small cost) while exploring the town.

A very nice and wonderful town in Hokkaido Japan. You can see the city and close to the tower the Fort Goryokaku which is the first Western-style fortress in Japan.
Also you see Mount Hakodate. Written is that the night view from this tower of the city and sea is one the three best nightviews in the world. I can confirm this.
