Take a look around Hakodate Morning Market in Japan - including Donburi Alley, fresh Hokkaido seafood and expensive fruit! Then step outside into -11°C and a snowy blizzard!
Hakodate fish market is right by the station. There are around 250 stalls selling fresh seafood, donburi fish rice bowls, all sorts of Japanese food you might not recognise and expensive fruit! There are also lots of restaurants and places to eat authentic Japanese food. I tried a yubari melon and sweetcorn, and Phil had a salmon, tuna and scallop rice bowl. Hakodate's also famous for crabs, and there are lots of them around the market stalls.

Hakodate Asaichi (Morning Market), Hakodate City
Asa Ichi in Japanese means morning market. Located close to the JR Hakodate Station itself, the morning market is open usually early in the morning to about 2 in the afternoon. This market sells mostly seafood that Hakodate is known for and dominated by Giant Crabs that are plentiful in the waters around Hakodate and in general around Hokkaido Region. There are over three hundred small to large stalls in this market sprinkled in with many restaurants.
In addition to this you can do squid fishing and the chef will prepare squid shashimi with the squid you caught. Also, there is a Donburi Yokocho market with many Donburi style dishes (usually a rice bowl with different toppings) with seafood delicacies.
Hokkaido region is extremely cold during the winters, so morning market is most enjoyed if you go there during summer time. But if you are the kind who enjoys winter weather, then it the season you visit does not matter. Enjoy!!!

Hokkaido! On Japan's north island is the city of Hakodate and here you will get the best seafood in Japan.
That's right - the fish caught here eventually goes to Tsukiji so it's freshest from the origin.
Today's breakfast was KAISENDON 海鮮丼 from ABUYA (油矢) in the Hakodate Morning Market near the JR Hakodate Station.

Hakodate Asaichi Morning Market is one of my favourite seafood market. It has most of the seafood Hokkaido has to offer.
The best is definitely the Grilled King Crab. Expensive but definitely worth it. The Pure White Corn was also a pleasant surprise.

Hokkaido Hakodate morning market bbq 函館早市
enjoying bbq seafood breakfast. jpy1000 for sea urchin and clams.
This stall is located along the busy streets of Hakodate morning market. you can witness the lady boss constantly shouting arm burp WANG aka number one.
Tried the sea urchins, scallop, clams and king crab leg.
crab leg was the best but no video because it was prepared inside.
Pretty expensive but super fresh.
Taste verdict : 8.8/10

Japan is my favorite place on the planet and I recently got to spend a week there as a guest of the Japan National Tourism Organization, and here's what happened. This is our fourth leg, a visit to the city of Hakodate, on the northern island of Hokkaido. It was a quick 24 hour visit, but we packed it full of fun, including a visit to see one of the top 3 night views in the world, a party where I was causing trouble by being left handed, exploring the Hakodate morning market, eating the best lunch ever, and finishing off with a lucky view of a normally shy mountain peak. Hakodate Morning Market Dancing Squid, Goryokaku Tower Cherry Blossoms: JAPAN VLOG EP4
After visiting Sapporo, we took the train down to a more southern part of Hokkaido, Hakodate. The first places we visited were the Goryokaku Tower and Hakodate Morning Market. We wanted to see the cherry blossoms in full bloom at the Goryokaku Tower, but we were a few days too late. Hakodate is known for their fresh seafood, especially the squid. We had a lot of fun fishing for squid and tasting everything. I ordered the Dancing Squid Bowl. Some people may think it's torture to the squid but the brain has been removed, so it is actually already dead. The Discovery Channel had a video on this topic:
