Join us around Hakodate - the end of the bullet train line in Hokkaido, Japan, to see one of Japan's top 3 night views at twilight!
It's extremely cold in Hakodate in winter! This was filmed in February in the snow and freezing temperatures. But that didn't stop us taking the tram to explore the Motomachi district, with European-style houses and churches and going on the ropeway up Mount Hakodate to see the beautiful night view. It's best to go at sunset, so you can see the colours and the lights. Then we looked for restaurants in Hakodate and found an amazing curry restaurant called Masala Curris (they have vegetarian curry!). It was delicious! And one of my favourite memories from the trip - walking along the snowy streets at night. It was so quiet, and completely the opposite of Tokyo!

The vaulted ceiling in the foyer that reaches up to the second floor is supported by 6 impressive ancient columns. The fourth floor displays Japanese paintings by Taikan Yokoyama, and Gyokudo Kawai, while the third floor displays Western art by Japanese artist Ryusei Kishida and other artists from around the world. On the second floor wooden sculptures by Koun Takamura and his disciple are displayed; the basement floor is an Art Nouveau Art Déco Glass gallery.

하코다테산 쪽으로 넓게 펼쳐져 있는 언덕지역인 모토마치. 언덕 위 고풍스러운 건물은 구하코다테 공회당. 하코다테를 대표하는 서양식 건물로 화려함을 자랑한다. 2층 발코니에 올라 바깥을 바라보니 항구를 낀 하코다테 전경이 시원하게 펼쳐진다. 공회당 근처에는 개성있는 교회 건물들이 모여 있다. 일본 성공회의 시작과 함께 한성 요한 교회. 중세 유럽의 교회양식으로 지어졌다. 가톨릭 모토마치 교회는 스테인드 글라스가 아름다운 고딕양식의 건물이다. 하리스토스 정교회는 원래 러시아 영사관의 부속성당으로 세워졌는데, 삼각 지붕과 세개의 작은 돔이 비잔틴 양식을 보여준다. 서구식 건물들이 많은 이유는 하코다테가 일본에서 가장 먼저 개항한 무역항 중 하나이기 때문이다.

Hakodate By Bus and Streetcar
15th August, 2017
After yesterday's rain, we were back to good weather today. We used our bus pass to see the sites we had missed so far. After breakfast at Four Points by Sheraton, we took a bus to the Trappist convent, and on the way back stopped at Goryokaku Tower and the Museum of Modern Art. We caught the only daytime “climbing bus” up Mount Hakodate, which was covered in cloud most of the time so visibility was limited.
We took the sightseeing bus to Motomachi, with its British heritage buildings, then back to Goryokaku to see the remains of the old fort.
At night we went back up the mountain, now packed with tourists, to get beautiful views of the lights of Hakodate.

Hand organ at Goryokaku Tower : Hakodate City : Japan
This is hand organ which was made to commemorate the first anniversary of the (grand) opening of the Goryokaku Tower. It took 8 months to make it by Motoki Tanime, He's very few workman of hand organ in Japan, who has a atelier at the foot of Mt.Hakodate.
People played the hand organ of the street and circus in Holland and German in the 18-19th Century. We Turn a handle and which has a wood pipe that can play a music by then wind. The hand organ shaped like a star-type and Tower of Goryokaku which was made with Ezoyamazakura, which is a kind of cherry blossom tree and it is continued with the Goryokaku where is a famous place of cherry blossom tree. It is played a gentle tone and a musical party of Seven wind up dolls cheers the musical Performance.
