A Rainy Day in Hakodate, Hokkaido, Japan
14th August
We returned to La Vista for another excellent Japanese-Italian meal and explored the Motomachi area, in particular The Museum of Northern Peoples, which got us out of the rain.
[Hakodate,Hokkaido] The must-try Hakodate burger joint people from all over Japan line up for!
First stop in Hokkaido - Hakodate! I would've never have guessed one of the most popular foods in a small ocean town in Hokkaido would be a burger restaurant. So let's see what the hype is all about! Lucky Pierrot can be found in 17 different locations in Hakodate, the most popular one is by the beautiful redbrick warehouse district by the bay.
Ainu Museum
Stopped by the Ainu Museum in Shiaoi near Noboribetsu. It's a quiet place where you can see Ainu dancing, learn some Ainu language (in Japanese) and see buildings and other cultural aspects of Japan's indigenous people.

My Northern Hokkaido Summer Odyssey PART 3
Travel to Japan's Northern Hokkaido region's Abashiri city and learn what happens during the harsh winters. Visit the Drift Ice museum (Okhotsk Ryuhyo Museum) where a damp towel will freeze instantly, roam the Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples, and finally, see what lurks under the winter sea. Beauty can be so fatal.

Oral History of Takao Abe
Interviewed by Doug Fairbairn, on 2016-06-20 in Tokyo, Japan, X7645.2016
© Computer History Museum
Mr. Abe was born in 1936 in Otaru, on Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan. He attended Hokkaido University, majoring in physics. He was recruited by a previous graduate of the same university to come to Tokyo and work for Shin-Etsu Handotai. The year was 1964. Abe requested a job in basic research, but the company needed help in growing crystalline silicon for use in semiconductors.
Abe was given the job to improve the quality of the silicon ingots. He traveled to Bell Labs and to Siemens, as Siemens was the source of their crystal growing equipment. During the interview, Abe describes the ups and downs of the industry and his substantial contributions to the quality of silicon wafers.

Giant Squid: Architeuthis
Architeuthis is a real giant squid which, has over 20 metres in length and 1,000 kilos in weight.
In the perpetual darkness of the ocean bed thousands of unknown beings thrive, never seen by man. This is the dwelling place of the giant squid, a legendary animal which the Norwegian sailors called the Kraken and which, up to now, no one has ever managed to see alive.
At the Coordination Centre for the Study and Protection of Marine Species, a naturalist in love with the sea had spent many years studying the legendary marine monster. Since time immemorial, giant squid had appeared along the shores of Asturias. For the local people, it was simply one of many creatures that the sea cast onto its beaches and, as there was no way of making use of them, no one paid any attention to them. But Luis Laria understood the importance of what was happening there.
At first, Luis Laria thought it was simply a chance occurrence, but in time he began to understand that there, just a short distance from the coast of Luarca, there was a stable population of giant squid, a unique treasure that the world ought to know about.
Though unknown to the general public, this is the most important collection of giant squid in the world. Today, the CEPESMA has 19 and every year new examples are added to its collection. And the giant squid are not the only mysterious cephalopods of the ocean depths to be found in the museum.
These mysterious squid have attracted the most eminent world specialists in cephalopods, in search of the tracks of an animal that has eluded man since the origin of our species. Because, though formidable in size, the giant squid remains a mystery for the scientific community and a marine monster for the immense majority; a monster whose legend began many centuries ago.
From the very start of history, man has found in the sea a home for his demons and superstitions. Those who crossed the oceans in fragile wooden ships lived for months in the fear of a liquid world that was forbidden to them and which frequently killed entire crews.
It is therefore understandable that many of the creatures that came to the surface of that shadowy universe were described by the first chroniclers as terrible beasts, hybrids between the reality and their feverish, terrified imaginations. Among these legendary beasts, there was one whose legend would grow in time: the Kraken. This was a fearsome monster with many arms, which attacked the ships and dragged them down into the depths; an enormous octopus whose strength and malice for centuries terrified the sailors of northern Europe.
But behind the legend of the monstrous Kraken lay a species of squid which the Danish naturalist baptised with the name Architeuthis: a real squid, yes, but an animal which, with its over 20 metres in length and 1,000 kilos in weight fully lived up to the reputation of the legendary Kraken. And, nonetheless, an animal about which we still know almost nothing.

Eating Live Squid in Japan
Looking for a unique restaurant in Tokyo? than the IKA center in Shinjuku is your spot and is one of my hidden secrets in Tokyo because at this restaurant you can catch your own squid. Subscribe to my channel ► for weekly videos!
Photos and extra tips on my blog:
The IKA Center [イカセンター] is located on the 4th floor across the massive Shinjuku station.
There is no English menu which could be the reason why this place isn't as widely known. Squid fishing starts at 3400 yen, roughly 30 US dollars per catch. Our dinner included an entire squid, a big tempura portion and drinks which came to 9400 yen, about 82 US dollars for 3 people.
The red water in the squid tank reminded me of the famous ocean of blood scene from the Japanese anime; Evangelion.
Squids have jets to propel themselves and use it to squirt ink and the last thing you want is getting squid ink all over your clothes, that's why we jumped into a bunch of raincoats.
Catching your own squid isn't that hard, you simply hook it straight out of the tank. Next, the squid is brought to the kitchen and freshly cut up into sashimi.
They sealed off the dining area with a plastic cover to prevent water being squirted around the restaurant by the squids.
Immediately after preparation, the raw squid tentacles are served, so fresh the squid tentacles are still moving on your plate.
Once we received the fully sliced head we had to dip it in a thick sauce made from ground up squid organs.
In conclusion, the IKA Center in Tokyo is a very unique restaurant worth a visit, especially for the eccentrics among us!

Subscribe to my channel here. Thank you so much for a thumb-up!
Japans’ northern island Hokkaido has a number of train stations that server just a few passengers a day. Kitahama station on the Senmo Main Line on the north eastern edge is one of them. It opened in 1924 and is called «The station that’s closest to the Okhotsk Sea». Just a few trains stop here everyday. Nevertheless, people cherish this place, that has been featured in several movies and series in Japan and even China. Visitors have left thousands of notes, tickets and business cards in the waiting room. There’s even a little restaurant that opened in 1986.

Japan Travel: Matsumae Castle Matsumaehan Yashiki History museum Hokkaido57
Matsumae (松前) is a former castle town just west of Cape Shirakami(白神岬),which is the southernmost point of Hokkaido. There is only 20 kilometers across the Tsugaru Strait from Aomori. Matsumae was the northern limit of Japan during the Edo Period and the sole feudal fief on the otherwise wild, untamed frontier of Hokkaido. The thriving, 30,000 person town attracted merchants engaged in the shipping trade, and was protected by a garrison at Matsumae Castle, which was the only Japanese style castle to have been built on Hokkaido.
Built on a hillside advantage point, Matsumae Castle cemented a foothold on Hokkaido from where to use the island's abundant natural resources. Toward the end of the Edo Period, the castle was equipped with cannon to counter the threat of foreign ships. As with many Japanese castles, Matsumae Castle's original keep was destroyed some times over the centuries. The current three story high structure is a modern concrete reconstruction from the early 1960s which houses a local history museum displaying a collection of artifacts of the local Matsumae clan, including some items related to the Ainu people.

Visitors can also rent period costume to wear(with a small cost) while exploring the town.
