函館ハリストス正教会の鐘　hakodate Orthodox Church in JAPAN

ハリストス正教会は、初代ロシア領事館附属聖堂として安政６年１８５９）に建てられたのが始まり。現在の建物は大正５年（１９１６）に建設されたものです。

　ロシア司祭ニコライが日本にはじめて伝えたとされるギリシャ正教の由緒あるこの教会は、白い壁に青緑の尖塔をあしらったビザンチン様式の優美な外観が印象的で、観光客の目をひときわ引きつける。さらに、市民からも「ガンガン寺」の愛称で親しまれ、函館のシンボルとして、国の重要文化財に指定されています。

　その鐘は、オルゴールのようなメロディのある独特の明るい音色を響かせ、港を見下ろす異国情緒あふれる元町一帯の景色とともに、訪れる人々に憩いのひとときと安らぎを与えています。

Hakodate, Japan - Full Tour (2019)

Hakodate (函館市 Hakodate-shi) is a city and port located in Oshima Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan. It is the capital city of Oshima Subprefecture.

As of July 31, 2011, the city has an estimated population of 279,851 with 143,221 households, and a population density of 412.83 persons per km2 (1,069.2 persons per sq. mi.). The total area is 677.77 km2 (261.69 sq mi). The city is now the third biggest in Hokkaido after Sapporo and Asahikawa.

Chapter 7: Hakodate

We've finally arrived in Hokkaido! It was a beautiful sunny day in Hakodate, and we did a lot of things in just one day! A common theme you'll see when reaching the north of Japan is that the biggest cities are usually close to the sea. The reason is because most of them were involved in large export trade in the past. The harbour of Hakodate was one of the first to be opened to foreign trade after Japan's era of isolation had come to an end. This also means they have many markets!

Speaking of which, the first place we went to was the Hakodate Morning Market. Just like in Aomori, every morning the market is opened to the public with street vendors offering fresh fish, crab, squid and many fruits like melons! I bought some squid jerky fresh from the market, and it definitely tasted a lot better than what you get in convenience stores around Japan!

After taking a nice walk around the market, we went to the famous Red Brick Warehouses, which are buildings from the past trading days now turned into a dining and shopping complex. I might have bought a few souvenirs there, hehe!

As previously mentioned, Hakodate was one of the first harbour to be opened to foreign trade. This caused traders from Russia and many other Western countries to move to Hakodate. The residential area known as Motomachi came to be! Foreign-looking buildings can be found here, like churches of all things! The most beautiful was the Russian Orthodox Church. The skyline from Motomachi was quite special!

Next, we took the tram to get to Fort Goryokaku, the last western style Japanese fortress in the country. It has a special star shape, and as you'll see in the video, I walked around most of it. It was a peaceful walk that leads to the center of the fortress where the rebuilt Former Magistrate Office stands. It was the base of operation for former shogunate officers against the newly formed government at the time, and as you'd expect, just like in Aizu, they tried to fight back! Lots of history here that's for sure. We decided to get a nice view of the whole fortress from Goryokaku Tower. For just a few yen, you can get to the top of the tower and see all its glory. Extra bonus: you also get a magnificent of the city!

Finally, the last stop of the day was a visit to Mount Hakodate via ropeway, oh my! It is a popular attraction because you get to see a night view of the city from the observation platforms. I've arrived just before sunset, and it was very special because while the sky was clear blue on one side, it was orangeish on the other! The view from the top was incredible! I wish I could have stayed very late, but I had a bullet train to catch!

Thanks a lot for watching, this was a very fun video to make and every time I watch it, I wish I could still be there! The next and final destination to my trip is Sapporo, let's go!

日本の音風景百選にも選ばれている函館ハリストス正教会の鐘。正式名称は主の復活聖堂。国重要文化財。ハイライトは1分50秒以降。

The Orthodox Church in Hakodate 函館ハリストス正教会

函館ハリストス正教会は、1858年（安政5年）、日本で最初のロシア領事館が箱館に置かれたことに端を発する。1859年（安政6年）、初代ロシア領事、ゴシュケヴィツチは、現在の教会所在地にロシア領事館の敷地を確保。その附属聖堂として1860年（安政7年）、日本で最初の正教会の聖堂「主の復活聖堂」が建てられた。
1861年（文久元年）、管轄司祭ワシイリイ・マホフ神父の後任として、修道司祭ニコライ・カサートキンが来函（1912年、東京神田にて永眠。1970年、「亜使徒日本の大主教聖ニコライ」として列聖される）、函館を拠点とした正教の伝道が始まる。1868年（慶応4年）、函館において最初の日本人三名の洗礼が行われた（パウエル澤辺琢磨、イオアン酒井篤礼、イアコフ浦野大蔵）。
1882年（明治15年）、管轄司祭として初めて日本人の司祭ティト小松韜蔵が着任し、次第に日本の正教会として根付いていく。
1907年（明治40年）の函館大火で焼失した初代聖堂に代わって、1916年（大正5年）、現在の聖堂が建てられた。1983年（昭和58年）、聖堂が国の重要文化財に指定される。
1996年（平成8年）、鐘楼の鐘の音が環境庁より「日本の音風景百選」に認定される。

This beautiful & unique church was founded in 1859 by the Russian consul in Hakodate Joseph Goshkevich. It was the first orthodox temple in Japan. From 1861 saint Nicolay of Japan begun his mission right here.
In 1907 the church completely perished in fires. New brick church was built in 1916.
We had visit this place & worshiped here in 2013 with a group of students & professors of the Nokolo-Ugreshskaya seminary, that I represent. Here You can see some of our photos & videos.
I suggest everybody, who can do it to follow our steps. The pries of this church fr. Nikolay is a very pleasant person.

The harbor of Hakodate became one of the first opened places for foreign trade in 1854 after Japan's era of isolation had come to an end. As a result, many traders from China and Russia and Western countries moved to Hakodate. Motomachi is located at the foot of Mount Hakodate, turned into a district favored among the new foreign residents.

Many foreign-looking buildings remain in the area today. The Russian Orthodox Church, the Old British Consulate, the Chinese Memorial Hall, the prefectural government's former branch office building and the old Hakodate Public Hall are among the most famous in the district.

Hakodate, Japan - Mount Hakodate Ropeway & Observation Deck (2019)

The Mt. Hakodate Ropeway (函館山ロープウェイ Hakodateyama Rōpuwei) is the name of an aerial lift, as well as its operator. The line climbs Mount Hakodate in Hakodate, Japan. As of 2004, this is the most heavily used aerial lift line in Japan, transporting 1,559,000 riders yearly. The aerial tramway was prominently featured in Noein, a 2005 anime.

2011年4月3日日曜、小雪が舞い散る寒い日。
元町教会群を見学していたら、偶然ハリストス正教会の午前10時の鐘が鳴り出しました。礼拝の合図ではないでしょうか。
日本の音風景100選にだと、庭園内に書かれてありました。
美しい鐘の音で。聞いているだけで心が安らぎます。

Hakodate Won Us Over Pt 2 | Japan 2016 | Episode 9.2

My morning exploring Midori-no-Shima (seen in the previous video) started to warm me up to Hakodate, but it wasn’t until our afternoon exploring the Motomachi area (seen in this video) that we both started to fall in love with this city.
Being the first port opened to foreign trade in 1854, Hakodate attracted many foreign traders and Motomachi was their preferred area to settle. This left it’s beautiful mark on Hakodate with an interesting melding of Western, Russian and Japanese architectural styles.

While exploring Motomachi we found the Russian Orthodox Church, Catholic Hakodate Motomachi Church, Motomachi Park, the old Town Hall and let’s not forget the second best melon bread ice cream in the world. We were lucky to be descending into Motomachi Park just as the sun was setting giving us a spectacular view over Hakodate port.

We finished out our day shopping in the red brick warehouses, followed up with a meal of soup curry and Genghis Khan (barbecued mutton).

Hakodate is an amazing city, and as it revealed it’s beauty succeeded in winning us over.

하코다테산 쪽으로 넓게 펼쳐져 있는 언덕지역인 모토마치. 언덕 위 고풍스러운 건물은 구하코다테 공회당. 하코다테를 대표하는 서양식 건물로 화려함을 자랑한다. 2층 발코니에 올라 바깥을 바라보니 항구를 낀 하코다테 전경이 시원하게 펼쳐진다. 공회당 근처에는 개성있는 교회 건물들이 모여 있다. 일본 성공회의 시작과 함께 한성 요한 교회. 중세 유럽의 교회양식으로 지어졌다. 가톨릭 모토마치 교회는 스테인드 글라스가 아름다운 고딕양식의 건물이다. 하리스토스 정교회는 원래 러시아 영사관의 부속성당으로 세워졌는데, 삼각 지붕과 세개의 작은 돔이 비잔틴 양식을 보여준다. 서구식 건물들이 많은 이유는 하코다테가 일본에서 가장 먼저 개항한 무역항 중 하나이기 때문이다.

Then, in the evening, we take the ropeway to the top of Mount Hakodate for a stunning night view of the port city.
