Hakone is a hot spring resort that has been around since the Nara era(800 AD), and it is a tourist area where many people come to relax and relieve the tiredness of travel in this land that has a history of more than 1200 years.

Hakone (箱根町 Hakone-machi?) is a town in Ashigarashimo District in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. As of June 2012, the town had an estimated population of 13,492 and a population density of 145 persons per km². The total area was 92.82 km². Hakone has been designated as a Geopark by UNESCO.Hakone is located in the mountainous far west of the prefecture, on the eastern side of Hakone Pass. Most of the town is within the borders of the volcanically active Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, centered around Lake Ashi.Hakone is the location of a noted Shinto shrine, the Hakone Gongen, which is mentioned in Heian period literature. During the Gempei War, Minamoto no Yoritomo prayed at this shrine for victory over his enemies, after his defeat at the Battle of Ishibashiyama, which was is located in neighboring Manazuru. As with the rest of Sagami Province, the area came under the control of the late Hōjō clan of Odawara during the Sengoku period. After the start of the Edo period, Hakone-juku was a post station on the Tōkaidō highway connecting Edo with Kyoto. It was also the site of a major barrier and official checkpoint on the route known as the Hakone Checkpoint (箱根関所 Hakone sekisho?), which formed the border of the Kantō region. Under the Tokugawa shogunate, all travellers entering and leaving Edo along the Tōkaidō were stopped here by officials. Their travel permits and baggage were examined to enforce Tokugawa laws that restricted the travel of women and weapons.
After the start of the Meiji Restoration, Hakone became a part of the short-lived Ashigara Prefecture before becoming part of Ashigarashimo District in Kanagawa prefecture in August 1876. Hakone attained town status in 1889. After merger with five neighboring towns and villages in September 1956, it reached its present boundaries.The economy of Hakone is strongly dominated by the tourist industry. Hakone is noted for its onsen hot spring resorts, which attract both Japanese and international visitors due to its proximity to the greater Tokyo metropolis and to Mount Fuji. Sights include the volcanically active Owakudani geysers and Hakone Shrine on the shore of the lake, as well as the Hakone Botanical Garden of Wetlands. In April the cherry blossoms (sakura) and in autumn the Miscanthus sinensis (susuki) are noted sights.
Hakone has a number of art museums, including the Hakone Open-Air Museum and Pola Museum of Art.
Major events include the annual Hakone Ekiden, a long distance collegiate foot race, held at the New Year, which runs from Tokyo to Hakone and back over two days, partly in commemoration of the couriers who ran the Tōkaidō road.
One famous hotel in Hakone is the historic Fujiya Hotel in Miyanoshita, which was patronized by noted literary figures, politicians and foreign dignitaries in the Meiji and Taishō and early Shōwa periods.
A noted local handicraft is parquetry.Hakone is best accessed from Odawara and Mishima, the terminus of the Odakyū Odawara Line, 70 minutes from Shinjuku, Tokyo. From Odawara, the Hakone Tozan Line continues into various resort towns in Hakone. Odakyu also runs the Romancecar limited express between Shinjuku and Hakone-Yumoto. From Gōra, the terminus of Hakone Tozan Line, the Hakone Tozan Cable Car funicular goes to Sōunzan. Ōwakudani can be reached by Hakone Ropeway from Sounzan and the lake, while the lake is crisscrossed by cartoonishly decorated pirate ships for tourists. There is also Hakone Komagatake Ropeway, which goes to the top of Mount Komagatake.
A popular Hakone Free Pass, allowing unlimited use of most forms of transport for several days, is available. Hakone Free Pass can be bought at Shinjuku Station, Odawara Station, any other chief station along Odakyū Odawara Line, Hakone-Yumoto Station, Gōra Station, any other chief station along Hakone Tozan Line, Sōunzan Station, Tōgendai Station, Sengoku-Annaijo Bus Stop, Moto-Hakone Port, Hakone-Machi Port, and JR Gotemba Station Bus Information.

15 Things to Do Near Tokyo, Japan - Visiting Yamanashi, Shizuoka & Kanagawa Prefectures
Some of my favorite adventures I had during my 12-day trip to Japan were the ones I had just outside of Tokyo in the Yamanashi, Shizuoka, and Kanagawa Prefectures, and I want to share them with you in this guide to things you can do near Tokyo, Japan!

At the volcanic Owakundani Valley, steam and hot gases issue from vents in the ground and pools of sulfuric water boil in the open air. Try an egg cooked in these pools; the shells turn black and are said will add 7 years to your life!
-Hakone Open-Air Museum – Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture
This fantastic open-air museum is home to over a thousand works of art by artists including Pablo Picasso. Check out their five exhibition halls, children’s areas, and more!
-Hakone Kowakidani Onsen Mizunooto – Kanagawa Prefecture
This unique onsen offers half-Japanese lodgings and half-Western amenities, including a bed instead of a futon or inflatable mattress. Don’t miss out on their heavenly Japanese barbecue dinner!
-Odawara Castle – Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture

A tranquil retreat, Hakone provides a pretty relaxing weekend getaway that is less than 2 hours away from the Tokyo metropolis. Or take the Odakyu Limited Express Romance Car and go from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto in 75 minutes. Definitely get the Hakone Freepass for easier travel around area. We stayed at the Mountain View Hakone for their outdoor Onsen, convenient location off a Hakone Bus Stop, and delicious meals. We started our Hakone trip by doing the Hakone loop counter clockwise. Starting at Gora, we took the Hakone Cable Car towards Sounzan for the Ropeway. When you get to the top you can exit the station for a spectacular view of the valley below. Go back into the station to take the Ropeway to Owakudani for black boiled eggs cooked in the sulfur hot springs. Remember to add a little salt to the egg that’s included in the bag of eggs. Here you'll find a museum and lots of souvenir shops. Also check out the gorgeous view of Mount Fuji (富士山), assuming it isn't blocked by clouds. From here, catch the Ropeway to Lake Ashinoko (芦ノ湖) to take the pirate ships to the other side of the lake. Reminded me of One Piece when I rode these ships. Then take a stroll around the Hakone Machi-ko area. Hit the Hakone Tokaido Checkpoint for some interesting history. Then walk over to Onshihakone Park (恩賜箱根公園) for an amazing view of Lake Ashinoko especially from the 弁天の鼻展望台 observation deck. Later, make your way along the tree-lined paths, cross the Ashigawa Bridge (芦川橋) and head up the Ancient Cedar Avenue (箱根旧街道杉並木) toward the Motohakone (元箱根) city area. Along the way on the left, you will get a pretty view of Mount Fuji and Hakone Jinjya Heiwa-no-Torii (箱根神社 平和の鳥居). We also took a detour and saw the Sengokuhara Susuki Grass Fields (仙石原すすき草原). There is definitely more to see than what we did. So many museums and attractions to visit.
Odakyu Freepass
Your JR Rail Pass won’t work for the Hakone area once you’ve gotten to Odawara station. Instead, pick up an Odakyu Freepass to get around. Purchased either in Shinjuku or Odawara, they have different types of passes to suit your needs. Such as passes with and without round trip use of the Romance Car; and 1 to 3 day passes for how long you will stay. Also, the pass lets you ride unlimited on all the major bus lines, ships, ropeways, and trains in Hakone. Definitely worth the cost for the amount of travel you do in Hakone
Mountain View Hakone
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. We got our own bathroom, while the shower and onsen are shared. You can also have Japanese style food added during your stay. We did so because many stores and restaurants close by 5 pm (17:00) or so and we felt we could relax more since we didn’t have to worry about food. It’s convenient location also made the hotel an excellent choice for us.

Oshino Hakkai | Eight magnificent springwater ponds around Mt Fuji
A small village in a scenic setting with eight ponds and views of Mt Fuji, complete with food and souvenirs shops.
Designated a natural monument of Japan, Oshino Hakkai houses a range of springwater ponds, filled with the water underflowing Mt Fuji. The mountain’s snowmelt is filtered for about 20 years underground between the layer of lava, until it turns into springwater for eight different ponds.
Oshino Hakkai, the scenic area with Mt Fuji towering in the backdrop – the sacred mountain full of history and legends, as well as the site of the remains of Asama Shrine and the site for Shinto purity rituals for climbers – became a part of the Mt Fuji World Heritage site.

Japan Travel: Toyota Kaikan Museum car enthusiast's must, Toyota City, Aichi 09 Moopon
The region around Nagoya is a home to Japan's leading car manufacturer, Toyota, where it has its headquarters and many of its domestic production plants.
The company's headquarters are located in the city of Toyota, less than one hour east from central Nagoya. There is the Toyota Kaikan Museum next to the headquarters, where Toyota displays its new models and technologies to the public and performs robot shows periodically.
The Kaikan Museum also serves as the meeting point for plant tours. Tours are conducted once daily from Monday to Friday in English and Japanese. To join a tour, you need to make an advance reservation via the internet or by phone. Tours last about two hours and are free of charge.
Access information
From central Nagoya, take the Tsurumai Subway Line to Toyota-shi Station (50 minutes, about 760 yen; about every 4th train on the Tsurumai Line continues to run on the Meitetsu Toyota Line all the way to Toyota-shi Station). From Toyota-shi Station, take a bus bound for Toyota Kinen Byoin and alight at Toyota Honsha-mae (15 minutes, 300 yen). Alternatively, you can take the Aichi Loop Line to Mikawa-Toyota Station and then it is a 15-minute walk to the Toyota Kaikan.

Hamarikyu Gardens features ponds, tea houses, and many areas with flowers, plum trees, and cherry trees. There is also a duck hunting ground. It's surrounded by the Shiodome highrise business district in Chuo Ward. Hamarikyu Gardens is a beautiful and relaxing garden.

Matsunaga Kinenkan (松永記念館)
Matsunaga Yasuzaemon (松永安左ヱ門), 1875-1971, was an important Japanese industrialist, art collector and tea ceremony master. He led power companies such as the Kyushu Electric Railway and the Chubu Electric Power Company. At the age of sixty, after his businesses were nationalized, he retired and took the Tea name Jian (耳庵), follow your ear after sixty, from the Analects of Confucius.
In 1946, he moved to the Odawara area and built a house called Rōkyosō (老欅荘) “Old Zelkova Villa ”, on a wooded hillside in Odawara Itabashi (小田原板橋). The house included a tea room, “Shōkatei” (松下亭), where he hosted tea ceremonies for many other famous connoisseurs. In 1959, he built an Art Gallery, to display his collection of important antiques. In 1979, the buildings and garden were donated to the city of Odawara, and from 1980 onwards, the Matsunaga Memorial Hall (松永記念館)
has been used as part of the Odawara Cultural Museum for special exhibitions. (In 1980, Matsunaga’s antiques were moved to the Fukuoka Art Museum).
In 1986, two tea houses (Yōuan, 葉雨庵, from Minami-machi, and Uyaku-tei, 烏薬亭, from Odawara), were repaired and moved to the south corner of the garden. On the second floor of the main Memorial Hall, visitors can enjoy a short tea ceremony thanks to the Odawara Tea Ceremony Federation. Additionally, Rōkyosō, 老欅荘, Matsunaga’s home in Odawara Itabashi, was restored in 2000 and opened to the public in 2001.
Surrounding the Matsunaga Memorial Hall, the garden landscape is expertly maintained, and in 2007 the garden was included in a list of 100 Best Japanese History Parks (日本の歴史公園100選). A large pond is home to water lilies, yellow iris and Japanese carp koi (錦鯉). Below Matsunaga’s house, an old, towering zelkova tree survives as a reminder of the Rōkyosō (老欅荘) “Old Zelkova Villa ” name. Next to the main Memorial hall, a large red rhododendron that an eighty-year-old Matsunaga brought back from the UK still blooms in late April — mid-May. Elsewhere in the garden, large Lindera strychnifolia shrubs were apparently planted by Matsunaga himself. This is the origin of the tea house annex name: Uyaku-tei (烏薬亭). (In Chinese medicine, the dried root of this tree is called crow medicine, and has been prized as a miracle longevity cure. Interestingly, Matsunaga Jian lived to 96 years of age!).
DIRECTIONS: From the Odawara Railway Station, the Hakone Itabashi Station (箱根板橋駅) is the first stop on the Odakyu Line towards Hakone Yumoto. From the Hakone Itabashi Station exit, a road directly across leads to the main street of Itabashi after about 200 m. Turn left here and walk for another 330m., passing shops on the left such as the Bonjour Bakery, and the famous hand-prepared Shimoda Tofu Shop (下田豆腐店). Further up the main street on the right-hand side, a large dark building is the former home and factory of the Uchino Soy Sauce enterprise (内野家と醤油工場). Next, on the right is a vertical sign pointing towards the Matsunaga Memorial Hall (松永記念館入り口), and a short walk of about 180 m. along this minor road leads to the entrance on the left, just after a dense boundary hedge (free admission).
