Haku! Tours in Lima, Peru
What a wonderful experience having Jim and Eduar show me Lima. Some of the money spent on the tour was also directed towards families we've visited in underprivileged neighborhoods.

Three Days in Lima With Haku Tours
This video is about Three Days in Lima With Haku Tours
Peru Day 1 - Shanty Town Tour (Haku Tours) Reflection and Review
After spending the day on a private your with just myself, my amazing sweet guide Natalie and my driver Ronnin I felt compelled to share the following.
If you are questioning the safety and the experience of the Shanty Tour, dont. I felt so safe and welcomed by the families, merchants, and even the stray dogs. The warmth in the smiles of the residents and children lifted my heart and I left feeling like I should have done more.
My donations made many smile, but it is obvious that their needs far exceed my one woman charity act. So this video is here to praise Haku Tours who donate 100% of the proceeds to the forgotten communities on Limas hill tops; to assure potrntial tourists of its safety and humbling experience; and remind us with more than enough to be grateful for what we are blessed with and consider sharing some of our excess with those barely getting by.
Namaste.
Haku Tours - Lima Shanty Town Tour 2013
80% of Lima's population live in shanty towns. These communities may be poor in the material sense, but are incredibly rich in spirit, gratitude and giving.
This short video is a tribute to the brilliant Haku Tours team and their humanitarian soul. Thank you for the unique shanty town experience. I look forward to visiting again.
Blessings,
Linda Summer,

21. SOUNDBITE (English) Jessica Weathersby, tourist from the United States:
If the world would see this and see how the houses are made, you'd think that they are poor. But really they are full of life and spirit. And you're going to think they're poor because of their lifestyle and how they live. And they are stress free, and they look happy, and the kids look happy, nobody is not starving, you know, nobody is not trying to cheat people, stealing. It's just a very holy, spiritual place.

23. SOUNDBITE (English) Raymond Weathersby, tourists from the United States:
I am so impressed with this tour because it is a spiritual tour; it is an example of what people can do for themselves by working for themselves and creating for themselves.

25. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Edwin Rojas, Founder of Haku Tours tourism agency:
When a visitor is in aboard, in his home, wanting to visit Peru, (they say) 'I want to know Peru, I want to meet people, I want to get to know about their lives, I want to get to know their culture, and all else, what we must show them, if we want to be honest, just with them, is to show this. This is reality. This is the country. This is the real Peru. It's Machu Picchu, of course, Cuzco, the Inca Trail and of course other places, but belongs to 20 percent-30 percent of the reality. The more complete reality is this, young towns (referring to settlements). We bring foreigners to visit young towns but more than touring them, it is for learning, where both the local and the foreigners learn from each other. It's a learning experience; we don't call it a tour, we call it an anthropological experience.

STORYLINE:
Shacks cling precariously to sandy hillsides in a Lima shantytown. The flat roofs of board-and-tin homes stretch as far as the eye can see on treeless moonscapes. Humble meals are served on battered plates.
Most tourists are drawn to Peru to see the majestic Incan citadel of Machu Picchu or sample the country's renowned cuisine. Yet for a few travellers the shantytowns are precisely why they come to this diverse Andean nation.
Edwin Rojas is the founder of Haku Tours, and he says his firm is the only travel agency that offers tours in shantytowns, along with more traditional historical and culinary tours of Peru's capital.
Shantytowns began to spring up around Lima and other cities as people fled the countryside amid the brutal war with Shining Path and Tupac Amaru guerrillas.

Shantytowns began to spring up around Lima and other cities as people fled the countryside amid the brutal war with Shining Path and Tupac Amaru guerrillas.
Rojas says the agency takes about 400 tourists a year to these poor neighborhoods, in groups of two to six, at a cost of 45 US dollars a person.
Participants sometimes visit the markets or they eat meals with local families, sampling daily fare very different from the exquisite dishes served in posh Lima restaurants and increasingly around the world.
Sometimes tourists bring medicines for the respiratory infections that affect children, help paint houses or pass out school supplies to children.
Rojas is aware that similar tours in Rio de Janeiro, Mumbai, Nairobi and Johannesburg have been criticized as exploiting the poor, but says he has built ties with community leaders in Lima's shantytowns.

77 Day Grand Voyage Cruise // PORT: Callao - Lima PERU // Haku Local Market Tour & Cooking Class
▶ We've been traveling around the world with kids!!
Follow us on Instagram, Youtube & Facebook: @RetiredToddlers
This trip we are spending 77 Days at Sea!!! Aboard Holland America's Volendam , the Grand Voyage to South America & Antarctica.
Port Stop: Callao - Lima , Peru
For this port stop, we used the tour company, Haku Tours ( ), a local nonprofit tour company that provides local experiences and supports the local communities!
They picked us up in the city (where our cruise shuttle dropped us off at the Indian Market) and from there we went to tour a local food market. Filipe, our guide was spectacular - especially with the kids ... showing them all the different fruits and veggies and seafood and taste testing some of the local cuisine! Our chef was equally as amazing and went around purchasing everything we needed to make Peruvian cusines that day!
We went back to a local apartment, where all the cooking began - in these beautiful clay pots from a Andes Mountain Village! We learned out to make chica morada, ceviche, causa and more .. and breaked for an amazing exotic fruit tasting before devouring the meals we prepared.
The whole experience was top notch and we highly recommend Haku Tours and our guides!!
