A State of Growth - An Illinois Beer Story
In honor of the 7th annual Chicago Craft Beer Week, we took a look at the expansion in the craft beer industry in the state of Illinois and the stories behind it.
The industry as a whole is growing and affecting so many industries around it - trucking, tank manufacturing, canning, design, raw materials, bar making - the list is endless. These five brewers are a small slice of the bigger picture, but are an accurate portrayal of growth in the state of Illinois and are representative of the industry as a whole. Craft Beer is, in fact, in a State of Growth.

In The Loop Quick Looks - Chicago's Craft Beer Craze
Chicago is emerging as a national leader in the exploding business of craft beer. The second city is second only to Portland, Oregon, in the number of craft breweries--more than 150. And, according to Crain’s, more commercial real estate is devoted to independent brewing here than in any other city in the country.
We Are Illinois Craft Beer - Celebrating Neighborhoods
To celebrate the 5th year of Chicago Craft Beer Week, we took a documentary approach in collaboration with the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild, highlighting three different brew communities in Illinois.
The focus on community in Chicago and the rest of the state is amazing, and we are only getting started. Over the last 5 years we have grown drastically in numbers, and over the last two years, we have grown from 25 to 85 breweries in the state of Illinois.
Enjoy these brewers stories and know that communities like this exist all over the state and are popping up every day.

34 Brew Pubs in One Day
This is the intermediate cut we screened in October 2009 of the Adventures of John Lovegrove and his one-day attempt to visit and drink at 34 Brew Pubs in the Portland Metro area. After the showing, I realized it needed a few tweaks and I just found time and desire to finish them a year and a half later. (Sorry for the wait, John.)
I have grand plans for a final cut of the footage. Hopefully I'll finish it in time for the end of the world in December 2012.

Global Warmer Hangout
In honor of the recent Global Warmer release, Sixpoint Founder and President Shane Welch hosted a Global Tasting of the new brew with beer experts spanning the country and the globe. While it was not strictly global as in worldwide, the tasting did include beer personalities from across the USA and also Brazil. The tasting's aim was twofold— to extend the conversation about the shifting state of the winter beer, and to embrace ways in which technology facilitates shared experiences. Beer is Culture, and technology extends that culture across many time zones.
Our participants were both amateur and professional, and each brought a vibrant story to the table (left to right):
Steph Byce (
Chicago, Illinois
Norman Miller (
Framingham, Massachusetts
Kathia Zanatta (
São Paulo, Brazil
James Bonomo (
Portland, Oregon
Jan Matysiak (Sixpoint Brewery)
Chris Steltz (
Harrisburg, PA
Ashley Rouston (
San Francisco, California
Adam Zuniga (
New York, New York
Buckle up and watch the whole thing if you have an hour, but we've outlined some highlights for you here:
19:00 First impressions of the beer begin
19:30 Shane and Adam talk hop specifics, breeding and strains
22:00 Jan talks about his beer creation goals and what balance in a beer means.
31:30 Shane and James talk about a beer that served as a bit of inspiration for the Global Warmer, and Shane tells the story of how 30 year old yeast made it into that beer.
45:30 Shane and Jan discuss how the recipe might be tweaked next year, creepers, and the constant struggle to reach the pinnacle of brewing.
51:50 Shane poses the question... what are your favorite winter beers?
