GOKARNA, INDIA : JUNGLE HIKE From Half Moon Beach to Om Beach
We reached this beach after a trek from Om beach for about 20 minutes. Be careful not to lose the track since there are no sign boards. It's safe to go in groups. One can even opt for boats but they usually charge a lot. This beach is very remote and mostly there are only foreigners. Only swimmers are advised to get into the water coz of the high waves. We could not spend much time since we had to visit other beaches on the same day. But definitely one of the best beach for some leisure time. Not sure about the sunset though. It is best advisable to reach Om beach before dark because boats are the only means of transport (Trekking back may be tiresome).
Backpacking Gokarna - Beach Trek Part 2 - Half Moon Beach - Paradise Beach - Incredible India
Part 1 Link :
Gokarna is a small temple town on the western coast of India in the Kumta taluka of Uttara Kannada district of the state of Karnataka.
This temple town also houses a chain of beaches which can be visited by trekking as well. Here is the list of the beaches:
1. Gokarna Beach.
2. Kudle Beach.
3. Om Beach.
4. Half Moon Beach.
5. Paradise Beach.
6. Belekan Beach.
7. God's own Beach.
Gokarna is a small temple town on the western coast of India in the Kumta taluk of Uttara Kannada district of the state of Karnataka.[1] The main temple and deity is Lord Shiva, who is also known as Mahabaleshwara. This temple houses what is believed to be original image of Lord Shiva's linga (Atmalinga). There are many other temples all over this small town. Ankola and Kumta on NH66 are the main towns where as Bhatkal and Karwar are the main small cities near Gokarna where almost all trains have halts and are connected to major cities like Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mangalore and Mumbai through nus service.
Gokarna is known as one of the seven important Hindu pilgrimage centers. It is on what was once an unspoiled beach near the estuary of the river Aghanashini. Recently, due to the influx of tourists, the character of the town has changed; it is no longer just a centre of pilgrimage, though large numbers of devotees visit to offer prayers and worship to Lord Shiva.
Due to its laid-back, unspoiled and rustic nature many younger western tourists started visiting Gokarna about a decade ago. The beaches around Gokarna were hardly used by the locals until these mainly western tourists started coming.[2] Enterprising locals started stores and restaurants, and now the resorts also cater to wealthier tourists.
The drive up the winding path that leads to Gokarna is scenic, with the rocky mountains and Western Ghats on one side and the Arabian Sea on the other. Gokarna is known for the beaches. The Gokarna main beach is in town and Kudle beach are west facing. Om beach, Half moon Beach, Paradise Beach (also known as Full moon) and Belekan beach are south facing.[7]
The Gokarna beach forms the coast of the town and is followed by Main beach in northern direction while the other four beaches lie to the south. Gokarna Main Beach is mainly used by Indian pilgrims. Main Beach is a long open beach, known for surfing. Kudle and Om are around 6 km from Gokarna town along a muddy hill; they are accessible by rickshaw or foot. Half moon and Paradise are beyond Om beach and are accessible only by trekking or boat. Om beach is named so because it is shaped like the auspicious ॐ Om symbol. Om beach is a naturally Om-shaped beach,[8] it attracts local tourists on weekends. It has a few shacks and eateries, and also boat service to other beaches.
Gokarna is about 238 km north of Mangalore, 483 km from Bengaluru and about 59 km from Karwar. It is between the Gangavali and Agnashini rivers along the Karwar coast by the Arabian Sea. It is 200 km north from the college towns of Suratkal and Manipal.
Gokarna can be reached by buses and maxicabs from Kumta (30 km), Ankola (26 km), Karwar (59 km) and Bhatkal(88 km) on National Highway 17 (NH-17). Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) runs long-journey buses from cities like Panaji, Bengaluru and Mangalore. Private buses (Vijayanand Roadlines - VRL, Sugama, Sea Bird, etc.) operate night journeys from the capital city of Bengaluru to Gokarna daily.
It can be reached by Konkan Railway on the Mumbai to Mangalore route or Goa to Mangalore route. The railway station (called Gokarna Road) is 6 km from the town. The station has a retiring room at a nominal price. Many important trains like Matsyagandha Express, KSR Bengaluru Karwar Express, Poorna Express, Marusagar Express and Mangalore Local and DEMU local are the Daily Local Trains halt here.[9]
The nearest airports are Hubli Airport, Karnataka which has domestic flights only, Goa International Airport at Goa and Mangalore International Airport at Bajpe, Karnataka are the nearest airports to reach at Gokarna.
Neighbouring villages are Bankikodla-Hanehalli, Sanikatta, Tadadi, Torke, Madangere, Maskeri, Adigone, Nelaguni and Bijjur.

Gokarna Beach Trek I Kudle - OM - Half Moon - Paradise I Couple on Budget I GoPro
We were in Gokarna on Christmas holiday. On day 2, we explored five beaches namely Gokarna beach, Kudle beach, Om beach, Half moon beach and Paradise beach by #trekking. The beaches are clean and less crowded compared to Goa. One peculiar thing is that almost all beach has Western ghat hills running parallel to them which makes the view quite magical.
While you can rent a bike or hire an auto /cab for beach hopping but it is beach trek which we recommend to do while in #Gokarna . It will take a one full day and lots of effort since you have to walk around 10 k.m from one beach to another but its totally worth it.

Gokarna Beach Trek - Om Beach - Half Moon Beach - Paradise Beach | Video Story
A video story of adventurous trekking to the beaches of Gokarna - Om, Half Moon and Paradise.
What is the one thing that you shouldn't miss while in Gokarana?
Of course, Gokarna is known for its serene beaches. And trekking to some of those beaches which aren't accessible by road are said to be a one of a kind experience. So we decided to do it.
You can actually start your trek from Kudle beach, trek all the way to Om beach, and from there to Half Moon beach and Paradise beach.
But we weren't quite sure about two things - time required and our stamina. So we rode to Om beach from Kudle beach. And our trek started from Om beach. We started off at around 3:30 PM. It was quite sunny. We had a bottle of water with us. The oft trodden path winding up and down the hills, were quite distinct and one wouldn't get lost, but for those 'two roads diverged in the woods, and which one should I take?!' moments. We soon decoded it - keep to the left, coz the right is always some view point to the sea. The trek is partly along the edge of cliffs and partly through forests.
After about 20 minutes of trekking from Om beach, you catch the first glimpse of Half Moon beach. Well, a small crescent shaped beach with a couple of shacks and a dozen people enjoying there.
We got our second bottle of water from one of those shacks.
Further trekking, with glimpses of the sea here and there and then all of a sudden you descend the hill to get a majestic view of Paradise - the beach.
Unlike in Half Moon, there are no shacks here; there's a family selling some refreshments. At Paradise people set up tents and stay for nights. They cook, have camp fires, music and fun - away from the hustle and bustle of their fellow beings.
We spent around 30 minutes at Paradise and would have loved to spent more, but for the setting sun.
You have the option to take a boat straight back to Om beach or Kudle beach. But we decided to trek back.
The setting sun gave us a different picture of the sea while trekking back. We got our third bottle of water from Paradise. We realized that apart from the regular track, people also chose adventurous routes climbing rocks. We were already out of our breaths and didn't want to sign up for more adventure.
We were back at Om Beach at around 6:15 PM. Well, this beach trek was a memorable one and we would have regretted not doing it.
Quick Tips:
1. Carry plenty of water.
2. Wear shoes.
3. Carry an extra set of clothes (I bet you cant't resist the beckoning sea).
4. Start early in the morning or in the evening.
5. Use your judgement if there's a confusion regarding the path, after all, all roads lead to Rome.
And a humble request - do not litter the beaches; carry back the bottles or any other waste materials and dispose them off in dustbins kept at the main beaches.

Gokarna, is a very touristic small town centered around temples with pilgrims coming throughout the year and tourists -indians, russians and europeans - coming from december to february for the beaches. The name Gokarna, means cow's ear (go=cow karna=ear) in Sanskrit and is based on Hindu mythology.
The town is popular among Hindu pilgrims as Gokarna has one of the few Shiva's holy temples with what is claimed to be original image of the god (a lingam). It is also the home of several religious celebrations, and some of them denote a good sense of dramaturgy. The most famous is the colorful Shiva Ratri festival at the end of february. If you are averse to massive crowd, unfamiliar with local culture, it is advisable to keep away during that time.
Get in
By train
Gokarna is accessible by rail from Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Mangalore and Madgaon (also called Margao).

Taxi (Rs 250)
Rickshaw (Rs 120-200, unless it's nighttime during the monsoon)
Bus (Rs 10). To go to the bus stop, turn right as you leave the station, follow Railway Station Road for 900m until you reach the main road called Gokarna Road.

Destinations
For trains stopping at the stations see lists for
Gokarna Road (GOK)
Kumta (KT)
Ankola (ANKL)
By bus
From Bangalore, there are daily 1-4 buses (depending on the day of travel) operating. It is a 12 hour overnight journey from Bangalore to Gokarna. The experience taking the overnight sleeper was described as being driven in a bouncy castle driven by the wicked witch of the west - beware.
If arriving from Goa, you can take a local bus from Madgaon or Canacona to Karwar, then catch another bus to Gokarna.
Coming down to Kumta is good option because one can easily catch buses to different places (especially Mangalore) as it is well connected.
Private buses also operate to/from Hampi/Hospet.
By air
The nearest airport is in Goa at Dabolim. (Rail link via Margao)
