UK: BRENCHLEY: HOME TOWN OF SOPHIE RHYS-JONES
English/Nat
The news that Prince Edward and his long-time girlfriend Sophie Rhys-Jones are to be married has launched another national bout of royal wedding fever in Britain.
Sophie will enter the ranks of the royal family as its most modern career woman.
She has her own successful public relations company and is known for having a flair for organising celebrity and charity events.
As her relationship with Edward developed and media pressure grew, she showed a determination to continue the work she enjoys.
APTN reports from Sophie's home town of Brenchley, south of London,
where her father spoke of his daughter's engagement.
There's nothing in Sophie Rhys-Jones' background to equip her for her new life.
She grew up in the quiet village of Brenchley in Kent, 55 kilometres (35 miles) southeast of London.
Her home here was a three-bedroom house, where her parents still live.
Her father Christopher, runs a small import export business, and her mother Mary took in typing to help pay for her daughter's education.
But over the years, Sophie has increasingly become an accepted part of the royal family's public profile, sharing many moments in the
spotlight, including the Golden Wedding celebrations for the Queen
and her husband Prince Philip.
The bride-to-be's parents posed for photographs at the family home on Wednesday.
The father of the bride was confident in his daughter's abilities to cope with life as a royal.

(Q. Your reaction to today's news?)
We're absolutely delighted with the news. We are completely
delighted.
(Q. Can you tell me how you were told they would be getting
engaged?)
Prince Edward came down between Christmas and the New Year and
asked my permission.
(Q. And what were your thoughts then?)
I was extremely pleased.
(Q. How do you get on with Prince Edward?)
Very well. We like him immensely and we've known him for some time
and he's a very very nice chap.
(Q. Your thoughts on how your daughter will cope with the pressures
of real life?)
Well I think she'll do very well. She isn't exactly catapulted in -
it's been a fairly long apprenticeship.

At the village pub where Sophie once worked as a barmaid, her former boss was also delighted to hear the news.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Sophie used to work here many years ago and some of the locals still remember her, the parents still occasionally come in to the Halfway House and hopefully we'll be seeing them more often now.
(Q. Are you disappointed they're not getting married here?)
Well I'm disappointed we're not holding the reception! But yes, it would be nice if they were married in the village but obviously it's not large enough to take all the people that would be coming in.
SUPER CAPTION: Robin Pratt, pub landlord
Other locals were happy to share their fond memories of Sophie when she lived at home.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Very attractive girl. Always a warm welcome when one came into the pub. She obviously knew her locals. Good barmaid - always topped the glasses well up. Very polite, courteous, well mannered. A lovely girl, really lovely girl.
SUPER CAPTION: Michael Noakes, local
As the sun sets over this sleepy village on Wednesday evening, it's likely that for the residents of Brenchley, life will never be quite the same again.
