A Deep Blue Dive in Key Colony Beach in Marathon IS CLOSED.
The dive shop suffered storm surge damage as did a lot of Key Colony Beach. I spoke with the owners of Key Colony Beach Marina who said they do not expect the dive shop to be in operation until season (December).
Sparkys restaurant is not expected to be open until December as well.
The marina store is open and has fuel but not bait currently.
The fishing charters that normally work right now are available for charters and the rest will be chartering in December.

CG Auxiliarist, Ray Nemura, and a few others dove Crocker reef on October 1st. The reef is in bad shape, says Nemura. As you come out of Snake Creek, Crocker reef is SW about a 3 1/2 miles out. They did two dives. Dive 1: About 200 yards West of mooring ball #1. Dive 2:They tied up to mooring ball 1. Although the dive sites were only a couple of hundred yards from each other, he found it strange that one dive had about 20 feet visibility and the other about 40 feet. Nemura says the reef was the color of sand and there was a spur and groove system dug by Irma. However, he did say there were lots of fish.
Crocker is a popular spot with three maintained mooring balls. Nemura explains that there is a series of named reefs in the area and the dive shops sometimes call them by their own unique names depending on the dive shop and the locale.
Crocker is not really a snorkeling spot as the reef is at least 45 feet below. He said the reef slants down to about 60 feet and then drops off to about 80 feet. Over the wall it was very milky and the visibility was terrible, so the divers decided not to venture there.
Again, Nemura says, The reef was NOT pretty. However, he said that Irma seemed to sandblast all the algae off the coral which could be a good thing. And he reiterates that there was a lot of fish: Grouper, Mangrove Snapper, Angel, Butterfly, as well as nurse sharks and even a turtle. He didn't see any lion fish though which he said was unusual. (Which also might be a good thing.)
So the down side: the reef is very damaged.
The up side: There is still life on the reef!
