The 'Hall of Opium' Museum in the Golden Triangle
Thailand has confronted the former reputation of the Golden Triangle in a most unexpected way by the creation of a Museum known as the Hall of Opium. The museum is purpose built, modern and spacious, it is sited imposingly in the green surroundings of Northern Thailand, north of Chiang Saen, an area that draws many visitors to its mountain terrain and cool evening ambiance, but its an area that hill tribe farmers once found that growing the profusely flowering poppy plant was a direct route to riches because of the ready market for its illegal by-product Opium

From the Mae Fah Luang Foundation Website:
The Golden Triangle: infamous worldwide for its poppy fields, drug smugglers, and opium warlords. Throughout the 1960s to early 1990s, the Golden Triangle supplied most of the world's heroin. Even today, Myanmar and less so the Laos PDR produce significant amounts of opium.
In 1988, HRH the Princess Mother expressed her desire to educate people on the background of opium in the Golden Triangle and elsewhere in the world. While the Doi Tung Development Project and other Sustainable Alternative Livelihood Development projects helped solve the problems of drug supply, HRH recognized that the fight against drugs also needs to address drug demand. The Hall of Opium was created to help reduce demand through education.
While intended for people of all ages and all nationalities, the target audience of the Hall of Opium is teens and young adults, those most susceptible to the lure of illegal drugs, to show them how opium addiction became a world-wide problem, and how drug abuse affects individuals, their families, neighborhoods, and even their country.
The exhibition was designed to be fun and captivating, entertaining while providing information, what we call edutainment. Covering an area of 5,600 square meters, the exhibition in the Hall of Opium is the result of almost 10 years of research. Here visitors learn about the 5,000-year history of opium: how it was a drug to treat illnesses, how its use spread throughout the world, how imperialist expansion used opium in the economic colonization and control of China, and how it eventually came to dominate in the Golden Triangle and now in Afghanistan. Visitors also learn about current issues of addiction and illegal drugs, efforts to control drugs, and the impacts of drug abuse and addiction.

here we tour the original Opium Museum at The Golden Triangle Thailand. They built a new one but to go there costs 250 Thai Baht while this one is only 50, well worth the cost. I have been to both and like this smaller one better. For more information visit

Mention opium and heroin in any discussion and the phrase The Golden Triangle along with Afghanistan will likely enter the conversation.
But The Golden Triangle has nothing to do with Afghanistan other than the commonality of opium and heroin that are the illegal cash crop of choice for many farmers seeking to eke out a living in both areas.
Personally I have been aware of The Golden Triangle and its reputation as a source of illegal drugs since the Vietnam War.
Having said that I have to admit the name Golden Triangle almost seems like a sexy catch phrase for adventure and glamour.
In fact the Thai tourist industry has caught onto the name to describe our destination -- the geographical point where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet. This occurs at the confluence of the Mekong and Ruark Rivers.
So there you go -- take a cool geographical point -- the meeting of three borders throw in a long history of illegal drug activity and give it a sexy name --the Golden Triangle and you have a tourist destination like no other -- right?
Well if you are going to the Golden Triangle expecting to see evidence of illegal drugs you will be disappointed as the only evidence I saw was a bench sponsored by American and Thai Drug Enforcement Agencies.
Does that mean it was not worth going there. On the contrary, drugs or no drugs, it was a great destination to travel to and to experience the meeting of these three countries. We were totally taken by it but then we are easily impressed.
Just to clarity The Golden Triangle is actually a large area of 350,000 square kilometers spread among the above-mentioned countries.

Welcome to the Golden Triangle! Historically this was the opium producing region of Asia. Here the Mekong river flows through three nations, Myanmar, Thailand and Laos. Today we will be exploring the things to see and do in the Golden Triangle.
Our journey starts at the treasure ship where a huge golden Buddha sits. From here you can take a boat ride to see Myanmar and the island of Done Sao in Laos. No visa is required to take the trip to Laos. It’s a small market town that sells souvenirs and snake whisky. Remember you are not allowed to enter the rest of Laos from here without a visa.
Lastly we headed to the Hall of Opium. This museum was created by her royal highness the princess mother in order to educate the public about the history of opium, its uses throughout the centuries and how it played a huge role in medicine and wide spread addiction. It’s one of the best museums in the country and it’s a must visit when you visit the golden triangle.
If you are visiting Chiang Rai, the Golden Triangle makes for an easy day trip and it’s only a 90-minute drive north.
I hope you enjoyed the Golden Triangle!

The Hall of Opium Museum is a combination of multimedia and exhibition to make learning more fun. Aiming to educate people about opium, this exhibition portrays every angle of the story, starting from the history of the Golden Triangle, the origin of opium, the opium war, opium warlords, drug smugglers, opium effects, the battle against opium and poppy growing, to rehabilitation of living conditions of the people who live in the central of the Golden Triangle, the former worldwide infamous drug trading zone.

Thailand's Golden Triangle - Looking for Opium Pipes
A wacky day tour of the Golden Triangle outside of Chiang Rai, Thailand. We found opium pipes, but the opium was actually more difficult to find. We also left Thailand, and figured out how to get back in without our passports.

The Royal Project of Thailand
In the late1960's, the mountainous area in upper north of Thailand was engaged in poverty, deforestation and opium production. The hill-tribe people lived in terrible poverty. Traditionally, the hill tribe practiced a so-called slash-and-burn cultivation, a farming system on sloping land where trees were cut down and burned. Then the land, fertiltzed by the ash from the burned trees, could be farmed. One of the crops produced by 'slash-and-burn' agriculture was opium poppy, which was the source of heroin. By 1970, the hill tribe people in northern Thailand were claimed to produce more than 200 tonnes of opium per year.
The problem was solved in 1969, when His MaJesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej found out an opium-growing hill tribe village called Doi Pui, only one hour walk from the King's Palace near the central city of Chiang Mai. His Majesty realized that there was an opportunity to change the course of Thailand's history. He found out that the opium farmers were also growing a kind of local peach variety that earned them more income than the opium poppy. This was possible because peach was a temperate fruit that could not be grow in the lowlands. If farmers grew improved varieties, they would get a better price when sold in the lowlands. His Majesty also learnt that the opium farmers got very little profits from opium and heroin business. Middle men including traffickers and wholesalers captured most of the profits. The discovery of the beach trees at Doi Pui village brought about the concept of the Royal Project.
The Royal Project has supported more than 172,309 people of 37,561 families, 297 villages living in the highlands through its 38 Development Centres located in 5 provinces of northern Thailand; Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son, Pra Yao and Lamphun.

Hallo of Opium
Thailand - Chiang Rai - Visiting the Golden Triangle and the Aka Tribe
The Golden Triangle is located in the province of Chiang Rai in the far north of Thailand. There from the west comes the river Ruak and flows into the Mekong which comes from the north. These rivers connects three countries: Thailand on the south, Burma (Myanmar) on the west, and Laos on the east; and only about 160 km north is the China. In the past, this area was in a very poor voice because the opium poppy was massively cultivated, and opium is afterwards processed into morphine and heroin. Later, Afghanistan took over the primacy of heroin production, and now there are mainly areas that attract tourists greatly. Just before the mouth of the Ruak River in Mekong is the giant golden Buddha on the boat, the elephant statues, the jewelry store (the famous ruby from Burma), the Opium Museum and the bridge through which the footpaths can cross into Burma. In the hills of the Golden Triangle there are many villages inhabited by ethnic groups Hmong, Shan, Iao, Karen, Lahu and Lisa, and the tour usually ends with a visit to the village of Aka tribe. This tribe is recognizable by its traditional black outfit decorated with bright ties, money and silver bell. In this video was used music from the YouTube’s Audio Library: Sicilian_Breeze - Topher Mohr and Alex Elena, Urchins - Rondo Brothers and Cue - Silent Partner.
