Dallas - Texas - United States
Dallas is a major city in Texas and is one of the two urban centers of the fourth most populous metropolitan area in the United States, along with Fort Worth. The city proper ranks ninth in the U.S. and third in Texas after Houston and San Antonio. The city's prominence arose from its historical importance as a center for the oil and cotton industries, and its position along numerous railroad lines. The bulk of the city is in Dallas County, of which it is the county seat. However, sections of the city are located in Collin, Denton, Kaufman, and Rockwall counties. According to the 2010 United States Census, the city had a population of 1,197,816. The United States Census Bureau's estimate for the city's population increased to 1,257,676 as of 2013.

Neighborhoods
Central Dallas is anchored by Downtown, the center of the city, along with Oak Lawn and Uptown, areas characterized by dense retail, restaurants, and nightlife. Downtown Dallas has a variety of named districts, including the West End Historic District, the Arts District, the Main Street District, Farmers Market District, the City Center business district, the Convention Center District, and the Reunion District.
Economy
The city's economy is primarily based on banking, commerce, telecommunications, technology, energy, healthcare and medical research, and transportation and logistics. The city is home to the third-largest concentration of Fortune 500 companies in the nation (behind New York City and Houston).
In 2007–08, Comerica Bank and AT&T located their headquarters in Dallas. Additional Fortune 500 companies headquartered in Dallas include Energy Transfer Equity, HollyFrontier, Southwest Airlines, Tenet Healthcare, Texas Instruments, Dean Foods, Trinity Industries, and Energy Future Holdings. Irving is home to 6 Fortune 500 companies of its own, including ExxonMobil, the most profitable company in the world and the second largest by revenue for 2015,[90] Kimberly-Clark, Fluor (engineering), Commercial Metals, Celanese, and Pioneer Natural Resources.[90] Additional companies headquartered in the Metroplex include American Airlines, Regency Energy Partners, Atmos Energy, Neiman Marcus, 7-Eleven, Brinker International, Primoris Services, Radio Shack, D.R. Horton, AMS Pictures, id Software, ENSCO Offshore Drilling, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Chuck E. Cheese's, Zales and Fossil.
According to Forbes magazine's annual list of The Richest People in America published September 21, 2011, the city itself is now home to 17 billionaires, up from 14 in 2009. In 2009 (with 14 billionaires) the city placed 6th worldwide among cities with the most billionaires.[94][95] The ranking does not even take into account the 8 billionaires who live in the neighboring city of Fort Worth.
Dallas is currently the third most popular destination for business travel in the United States, and the Dallas Convention Center is one of the largest and busiest convention centers in the country, at over 1,000,000 square feet (93,000 m2), and the world's single-largest column-free exhibit hall.
Events
The most notable event held in Dallas is the State Fair of Texas, which has been held annually at Fair Park since 1886. The fair is a massive event, bringing in an estimated $350 million to the city's economy annually. The Red River Shootout, which pits the University of Texas at Austin against The University of Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl also brings significant crowds to the city. The city also hosts the State Fair Classic and Heart of Dallas Bowl at the Cotton Bowl.
Sports
The Dallas metropolitan area is home to six major league sports teams: the Dallas Cowboys (National Football League), Dallas Mavericks (National Basketball Association), Texas Rangers (Major League Baseball), Dallas Stars (National Hockey League), FC Dallas (Major League Soccer), and Dallas Wings (Women's National Basketball Association).
The Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League play in nearby Arlington, Texas. Since joining the league as an expansion team in 1960, the Cowboys have enjoyed substantial success, advancing to eight Super Bowls and winning five; according to profootballreference.com, as of the end of the 2009 season they were the winningest active NFL franchise. Known widely as America's Team, the Dallas Cowboys are financially the most valuable sports 'franchise' in the United States, worth approximately 1.5 billion dollars.[122] In 2009, the Cowboys relocated to their new 80,000-seat stadium in Arlington, which was the site of Super Bowl XLV.
The Dallas Mavericks play at the American Airlines Center. They won their first National Basketball Association championship in 2011 led by Dirk Nowitzki.

Dallas is the main core of the largest metropolitan area in the Southern United States and the largest inland metropolitan area in the U.S. that lacks any navigable link to the sea. Dallas then developed as a strong industrial and financial center and a major inland port, due to the convergence of major railroad lines, interstate highways, and the construction of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, one of the largest and busiest airports in the world.Dallas is rated a beta(+) global city. The economy of Dallas is considered diverse, with dominant sectors including defense, financial services, information technology, telecommunications, and transportation. It serves as the headquarters for 9 Fortune 500 companies within the city limits. The Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex hosts additional Fortune 500 companies, including American Airlines (Fort Worth), ExxonMobil (Irving), and J.C. Penney (Plano). from Wikipedia: The George W. Bush Presidential Center, which opened on April 25, 2013,[1] is a complex that includes former President George W. Bush's presidential library and museum, the George W. Bush Policy Institute, and the offices of the George W. Bush Foundation. It is located on the campus of Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, Texas. SMU insisted the land for the condos may or may not be needed for the library, yet space was still an issue. Many in University Park, an upscale enclave next to the campus, were also displeased with the prospect of thousands of people and tour buses going through their neighborhood to visit the library. Despite that, the University Park town council agreed to put up for a vote a plan to sell parkland to SMU for the library. Baylor published sections of their proposal on their website,[4] but no new information was revealed, and Baylor announced that it would not publish the complete proposal until after the final site selection was announced.
Fundraisin
The nonprofit George W. Bush Foundation in early 2009 had a goal to raise $300 million for construction and endowment of the library, according to its president Mark Langdale.[11]
Construction[edit]
The architect Robert A.M. Stern, dean of the architecture school at Yale University, was picked to design the library.[12]
Groundbreaking took place on November 16, 2010.[13][14] In tandem with the publication of his memoir Decision Points, President Bush hosted a November 16, 2010 groundbreaking ceremony for the center.[15] At the event, Cheney commented that this may be the only shovel-ready project in America, using a term prominently and ultimately ruefully associated with President Obama's 2009 fiscal stimulus package.[14][16] The construction company chosen was Manhattan Construction Company, which had also built the George Bush Presidential Library.
The construction of the center has been projected to cost $250 million.[17] In April 2013, the building earned a platinum certification as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design green building.[18]
Completion and dedication ceremony[edit]
The completion and dedication of the facility took place on April 25, 2013. All living former U.S. presidents and the incumbent U.S. president, Barack Obama, were in attendance. (The last meeting of President Obama, former President Bush, former President Clinton, former President George H.W. Bush and former President Carter took place in the White House in 2009, just ahead of President Obama's first inauguration.[19])
Presidential library[edit]
At a planned 207,000 square feet (19,200 m2), on completion it will become the second-largest presidential library, behind only the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.[11]
Policy Institute[edit]
Ambassador James K. Glassman, a former State Department official, was selected in September 2009 to serve as founding executive director of the Center's George W. Bush Institute, which will function as an action-oriented think tank independent of SMU.[20]
The institute is planned to advance four causes he adopted as his own while in office: human freedom, global health, economic growth and education reform.[citation needed] He has also started a women's initiative led by his wife, Laura Bush. At the November, 2010, groundbreaking, the former president said to attendees, The decisions of governing are on another president's desk, and he deserves to make them without criticism from me. But staying out of current affairs and politics does not mean staying out of policy.[14] Laura Bush addressed the crowd to promote the importance of fighting for women's rights around the world.[16]
In 2012, it published, The 4% Solution: Unleashing the Economic Growth America Needs (Crown Business, 2012), a collection of essays by Brendan Minister, W. Michael Cox and Richard Alm, Robert Lucas, Jr., Edward C. Prescott, Steven Gjerstad and Vernon L. Smith, Kevin Hassett, David Malpass, Myron Scholes, Peter G. Klein, Peter G. Klein, Robert Litan, Nick Schulz, Maria Minniti, Carlos Guttierez, Steven F. Hayward and Kenneth P. Green, Charles Blahous and Jason T. Fichtner, Eric Hanushek, Gary Becker, Pia M. Orrenius and Madeline Zavodny, E. Floyd Kvamme, Amity Shlaes, and Michael Novak, including five Nobel Prize winners.[21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30] The book contains a foreword by George W. Bush and an introduction by James K. Prison fight: Super-max jail fight sends five inmates to hospital - TomoNews
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — Five inmates were injured during a massive fight at Illinois's Cook County Jail Friday around 1:30 p.m., in the jail's super-max division.
The mayhem began when an inmate standing near the center of the room punched another in the back of the head. Another inmate was then struck, causing his head to bounce off a cement pillar. Out cold, he remained on the floor until someone pulled him away.
Nearly 30 men in the general population room were present, but some clearly didn’t want to be involved and stayed close to the walls.
Guards eventually brought the situation under control with taser guns.
Several weapons were recovered including two that appear to have been made from inhaler parts. Officials are investigating how the inmates got hold of weapons.
Cara Smith, a spokeswoman for the jail, said five inmates were taken to hospital to be treated for their injuries, including stab wounds, but none of the injuries were life-threatening.
Four of the five inmates were in jail on murder charges while the fifth person was charged with armed robbery.
