Hue, Vietnam
Video with images of Hue a provincial capital at the foot of the Truong Son mountain near the coast of the South chinese Sea. From 1802 until 1945 the city of harmony was the residence of the emperors of the Nguyen dynasty. Traditionally it was also the cultural and educational capital of the empire which preserved its Vietnamese identity best. The Perfume river divides the city into two parts. The river has its name from the odoriferous woods on the Truong Son mountain where it originates. On the nortwestern shore is the old city with the Citadel and the remnants of the Imperial City and the Forbidden Purple City. The new city on the southeastern shore is constructed by the French. This part of the city has modern western buildings and a colonial architecture.
In the Imperial City the emperors of the Nguyen dynasty held their official ceremonies: they held audiences and performed religious rituals to preserve harmony between heaven and earth. In the past the main entrance of the Imperial City was reserved for the emperor. The entrances to the left and the right of the imperial entrance were destined for the civil and military mandarins. Soldiers, horses and elephants entered the city through the entrances at the other sides. Behind the main entrance a bridge over two lotus ponds leads to a courtyard with two terraces at different levels. In this courtyard, called the Great Courtyard, the mandarins from all parts of the empire gathered to bring their honours to the emperor. The high ranking mandarins stood on the higher terrace and low ranking officials stood on the lower terrace. The left side of the courtyard was for the civil mandarins and the right side of the courtyard was for the military officials. The courtyard was in front of the Thai Hoa Palace or the Palace of Supreme Harmony. The building has two roofs with yellow tiles and edges with dragons. The building was constructed to stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter. In the palace the emperor received foreign emissaries and other high ranking guests. It was also the place for crowning festivities, birthday festivals and other imperial ceremonies.
Behind the Thai Hoa Palace is a courtyard with a small building on the left and on the right. In this Mandarin Hall the officials prepared for the greeting ceremony in front of the Thai Hoa Palace. The courtyard is opposite the entrance of the Forbidden Purple City with the private rooms of the imperial family. The city was an imitation of the imperial court of the Chinese emperors in Beijing and reflects the introvert nature of the Vietnamese emperors. Only the emperor and his family was allowed to enter the forbidden city. Trespassers faced a death penalty. Originally the purple city, enclosed by a brick wall with seven gates, had more than hundred buildings. Many of them were destroyed by the Americans in the Vietnam War. The western quarter was reserved for the harems with the emperor's wives and concubines. In the eastern quarter were the imperial library, theatre and archives.
In the environment of Hue near the Perfume river there are two pagodas and five tombs of former emperors belonging to the Nguyen dynasty. Amongst them is the tomb of emperor Minh Mang who ruled from 1820 to 1841. The other emperors died in exile and were buried abroad. Each emperor gave detailed instructions for the design and location of his tomb after careful consultation of a diviner. The tomb and its gardens, temples and pavilions had to be in harmony with the natural surroundings. The tomb is a fine example how the imperial court at the beginning of the nineteenth century tried to survive the French colonial administration.
Complex of Hue Monuments - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Complex of Hue Monuments is an impressive and interesting UNESCO World Heritage Site. Although the site includes several tombs outside of Hue, the highlight here is magnificent Hue Citadel. Despite being the scene of heavy fighting during the 1968 Tet Offensive, the remaining buildings have been meticulously restored and are now in fantastic condition. This was one of our favourite sites in all of Vietnam, so let's have a look!

KHAI DINH TOMB | ROYAL TOMB IN HUE | HUE ATTRACTIONS - WHAT TO DO IN HUE
Currently, compared to other mysterious tombs in Vietnam, Tomb of Khai Dinh has been relatively intact and owned a unique architecture. Emperor Khai Dinh decided to locate his tomb imperial at the foot of the mountain Chau Chu, 9 kilometers south of Hue city. In comparison with the rest of imperial tombs, this imperial tomb is small in extent, little more than 5600 square meters; however, its construction, decoration and details are very elaborate.
Khai Dinh became the Emperor of Vietnam in 1916 at the age of 31. Right after taking the throne, he built many palaces, buildings, and royal tombs for himself and his own imperial clan, such as Kien Trung Palace, An Dinh Palace, Trang An Gate, Hien Nhon Gate, Chuong Duc Gate, and especially Ung tomb (former Khai Dinh Tomb). Compared to tombs of previous predecessor Emperors, namely Gia Long Tomb, Minh Mang Tomb, Tu Duc Tomb, Dong Khanh Tomb, Duc Duc Tomb, Khai Dinh Tomb covers an area of much more modest, with dimension of 117m x 48.5m whereas extremely elaborate and time consuming to complete the tomb. In detail, it took 11 year to finish the tomb.
Unlike Tomb of Tu Duc bringing the atmosphere close to nature, as a watercolor painting, Khai Dinh Tomb when newly accomplished was compared as a colorful, magnificent and extremely showy cage. Yet, fine art and painting studies today must take their hat off before the architectural sculpture quintessence reaching sophistication in lines, and harmony in layout to build a magnificent tomb. This turns the tomb into a masterpiece stretching Vietnam history.
The location of Khai Dinh Tomb was carefully calculated. Accordingly, the position of hilly mountains, streams around the tomb were relative with the geographical feng shui elements, creating majestic and breathtaking natural scenery. Architecture of the Tomb of Khai Dinh was extremely strange, far different from structures of previous predecessor Emperors' tombs. Talking about feng shui, this area was an ideal land to build the tomb. Paricularly, Thien Dinh Palace was in the highest position and the main architecture of the tomb. It consisted of five consecutive parts tightly incorporating together. The 2-side rooms were for guard soldiers. In front was Khai Thanh Hall retaining the altars and portraits of Khai Dinh Emperor. In the middle was the burial area with the emperor statue on the top and deep down below was the grave of Khai Dinh Emperor. In the rear was the altar of Khai Dinh Emperor. The tomb remained a high slope. From the street to the main palace was a floating rectangular blocks up to 127 doorsteps. In particular, Khai Dinh was very fond of foreign elements. He specially enjoyed the beauty of modern Western culture. His tomb's architecture thus owns a perfect combination of European and Asian culture, between classic and modern features. Tomb of Khai Dinh held a west - east architecture, a wonderful harmony of many architectural features of Hinduism, Buddhism, Roman, and Gothic...
In populations of tombs, Tomb of Khai Dinh was built with cement and steel, meanwhile the others were implemented with mortar and masonry. There were two houses for civil and military mandarins; yet, the king had died when the building was on the way to be finished. The tomb was completed by Emperor Bao Dai, Khai Dinh's successor in 1931. This was the oldest lasting building and also the last royal tomb constructed in Nguyen Dynasty.
The system of Khai Dinh Tomb completed 83 years ago, so far it has been still relatively intact. The most artistic values and excellent features of the tomb are Thien Dinh Palace, the burial place of King Khai Dinh's corpse. The primary responsibility to create the perfect work of art in the Thien Dinh Palace was Pham Van Tanh artist, author of 3 murals “9 dragons hidden in cloud), the biggest murals in Vietnam. It was decorated the ceiling of three halls in Thien Dinh Palace.
Tomb of Khai Dinh is the pinnacle of visual art on porcelain and glass. It is actually a valuable work of art and architecture. Tourists once participating in Hue tourism in general and Khai Dinh tomb in particular will actually get unforgettable memories.

TU HIEU PAGODA
The pagoda is located at Duong Xuan Thuong III hamlet, in Thuy Xuan village, 5km southwest of Hue. It faces the southeast and uses Ngu Binh mount as a front screen.
The pagoda was originally a small hut built by Nhat Dinh in 1843, who was formerly recognized by royal authority as the monk of Giac Hoang Pagoda. In 1848, the pagoda was restored by monk Cung Ky with the help of the king's eunuchs and courtiers. Tu Hieu hence became a large pagoda.
In 1894, it was rebuilt by Cuong Ky with the support of King Thanh Thai and the King's eunuchs created the half-moon lake. In 1962, the pagoda was renovated by Most Ven. Chon Thiet. And in 1971 the three entrance gate and the staff houses were rehabilitated by senior monk Chi Niem.
The pagoda was built in the shape of the Chinese character Khau (mouth), with the main building consisting of three rooms and two wings. The main sanctuary is devoted to the worship of Buddha. Behind there is a room honoring former monks of the pagoda. Across a courtyard, the Quang Hieu Duong Hall houses an altar dedicated to local Buddhist devotees on the right, another to the deity Quan Cong in the center, and a third to the eunuchs on the left. A separate altar in this hall honors Le Van Duyet, an outstanding mandarin during the reign of Emperor Gia Long. On the left side of the courtyard are the living quarters of the monks (Ta Lac Thien) and to Tu Hieu right is the guest-house (Huu Ai Nhat).
The entrance gate to the pagoda is a curved two storey structure. On the second storey, a statue of the guardian spirit Ho Phap protects the pagoda. Inside the gate is a crescent-lotus pond. On both sides of the courtyard are stele houses engraved with the history of the pagoda .

Lunar New Year in Vietnam
I am Duong from Vietnam. This is my short video about Lunar New Year in my country. I made it when I was in grade 10.
Tet holiday ( The lunar new year). The first sight and the fifth sight: A flower garden in my city ( There were many any peaches there. Every year, peach flowers only blossom at Tet holiday). The second sight and the fourth sight: a flower market in my city ( There are always some flower markets at Tet holiday. A lot of people bring various types of flowers to the markets to sell. Others come there to purchase the blooms to decorate their houses). The third sight: A normal maket in my city ( In the market, there are many small stores. The owners sell Chung cake which is called sticky cake. This is traditional cake of Vietnamese at Tet holiday). The next sights: Some trade sights before the lunar new year and lovely sightseeings in the city ( The swan lake, Vo Mieu Temple)Introducing about Vo Mieu temple:Vo Mieu is a temple which was built in the mid 19th century near former Ha Tinh wall and now belongs to territory of Tan Giang quarter in Ha Tinh city. The temple is called Quan Thanh Tu ( Holy mandarin) to dedicate Van Truong mandarin, a general of strategic talent, heroic spirit and total faithfulness of Chinese history during the three Kingdoms ( Tam Quoc) dynasty. It situates in a large site, surrounded with many century- old trees. Vo Mieu is grant and quiet. It is not clear that artisans by chance or deliberatedly made the architectural style of the small Temple to reflect personality of historical actors dedicated here. The Vo Mieu's structure comprises a three- door Temple gate is larger, heavily built, grant but well- proportioned with panorama of the site and halls thanks to its unique architecture and independent and supple decorative details showing images of swelling tiger and blending phoenix...The tow halls of Temple have a mutually liked- up architecture with an open ground in the middle to create the opening and deepness of architectural space. The front of lower palace was decorated rather well with various shapes of sitting dragons, moon holding swelling tiger. With the structure of eight roofs, the upper palace enhanced further grandness, and ancient look of the Temple.Vo Mieu is not only a beautiful architecture but also holds many valuable exhibits such as ancient statutes, hundred- aged bronze bells and a lot of scrolls and ancestral tablets to help us more understand about Ha Tinh's history, culture and people as well as their spirit deepness.

However, Dionysus allows Pythias to return to Athens to visit his ailing wife with the understanding he will then come back to face his punishment. The very first stop-over of any foreign tourist in Hanoi is always Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam (translated as Temple of Literature), which reveals the Hanoians' spirit of study in the past!
Situated at the south of Thang Long citadel, is on top of the historical and beautiful sightseeings of the beautiful capital of Vietnam. Please follow us in a brief tour of exploring his beauty and deep values;
Historical meaning
Tourists, particularly the foreign ones, now flock to the site for taking a look into its profound traditional meanings of both a Confucion temple and the first university of Vietnam. Văn Miếu or Temple of Literature, known as pagode des Corbeaux during the period of French colonisation, was founded as a Confucian temple in 1070.
Only parts of the Văn Miếu complex date back to the earliest period, although much of the architecture dates to the Ly (1010 -- 1225) and Tran (1225 -- 1400) Dynasties. In 1076, Vietnam's first university, the Quốc Tử Giám (or National University), was established within this temple to educate Vietnam's mandarin class. The university functioned for more than 700 years, from 1076 to 1779, during which, 2,313 doctors graduated. Hence, the complex has been attached to the name of Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam up to now.
A beauty-spot of architectural values
This ancient Confucian sanctuary is now considered one of Hanoi's finest historical and cultural sites. The ever special architetural style of Van Mieu dates back to the 11th century, evoking an inspiration of classical creativeness of many of us, one of my tourists remarked. Just take a look into the art of architecture, you will share the feeling! The temple is based on Confucius' birthplace at Qufu in the Chinese province of Shandong. It consists of five courtyards lined out in order, entrance to the first, via the impressive twin-tiered Van Mieu gate leads to three pathways that run through the length of the complex. The centre path was reserved for the King only, the one to its left for administrative Mandarins and the one to its right for military Mandarins.
The first two courtyards are peaceful havens of ancient trees and well-trimmed lawns where the scholars could relax away from the bustle of the city outside the thick stone walls. Entrance to the third courtyard is through the dominating Khue Van Cac (constellation of literature), a large pavilion built in 1802. Central to the this courtyard is the Thien Quang Tinh (Well Of Heavenly Clarity), either side of which stand two great halls which house the true treasures of the temple. These are 82 stone steles. Another 34 are believed to have been lost over the years. They sit upon stone tortoises and are inscribed with the names and birth places of 1306 men who were awarded doctorates from the triennial examinations held here at the Quoc Tu Giam (National University) between 1484 and 1780, when the capital was moved to Hue.
The fourth courtyard is bordered on either side by great pavilions which once contained altersl of 72 of Confucius greatest students but which now contain offices, a gift shop and a small museum which contains ink wells, pens, books and personal artifacts belonging to some of the students that have studied here through the years. At the far end of the courtyard is the altar with statues of Confucius and his four closest disciples. The fifth courtyard contained the Quoc Tu Giam, Vietnam's first university founded in 1076 King Ly Can Duc, but this was destroyed by French bombing in 1947.
Though having gone through lots of restoration work, the temple still retains its very first original shape, to be one of the visit-worthy sightseeings of Hanoi, captivating to a huge number of tourists elsewhere.
A space of peace, green trees and solemnity covers the whole temple of historical and traditional love for study, making tourists feel like they were lost in a land of Confucion and traditional values. If you are in Hanoi, you should really come and explore it yourself!
