Halona Blowhole on Oahu
The Halona Blowhole can be found on the south side of Oahu along the coastal highway, just 5 minutes down the road from Hanauma Bay, and neighboring Eternity Beach & Sandy Beach. The famous reef blowhole is best viewed in windy and stormy sea conditions, or when the surf is up on the this side of the island. Aloha & Enjoy!!

Halona Blowhole Lookout, Oahu, Hawaii, USA
Halona Blowhole Lookout on Oahu, Hawaii.
The spot is a natural wonder and sightseeing spot overlooking the pacific ocean with a nice rock formation and a small, hidden beach at the right side from the Halona Blowhole.
If you like waves, the power of the surf, sharp rocks, wind and a small, hidden beach - this is maybe an interesting spot for you and worth, a stop at the road along the coast.
It's located close to other spots like Hanauma Bay, the Koko Crater and Koko head Park, Lanai Lookout and Halona Cove - so it can combined with other activities and there is no need for an extra drive.
We stay at Oahu in September 2015 and we had a nice break here at our tour along the coast of Oahu.
Video was made with a GoPro Hero 4 Camera.

Halona Blowhole booming - Oahu, HI March 20, 2010
Waves crash against the Eastern Oahu coastline and into an old lava tube pushing water through a hole in the top of the rock ledge. This day it was kicking hard and WOWing the crowd.

Hālona Blowhole
Hālona Blowhole is a rock formation and a blowhole on the island of Oahu, Hawaii off of Hanauma Bay at Hālona Point
overlooking the Pacific Ocean. In Hawaiian hālona means lookout.
On windy days when the tide is high, the ocean breeze sends the waves rolling on to the shore where the rock formation then shoots sea spray high into the air through the cave acting like a geyser. It is not always at its best every day though. The blowhole is most active when the tide is high and the winds are strong. This is a big tourist spot in Hawaii. People come from all over to enjoy the beautiful scenery, the beach at the cove, and in the winter it is the spot to go to see the humpback whale as they take their journey leaving the North Pacific or the Honu (The Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles) swimming about. Diving is possible along the coast when there are light northerly winds blowing and no surf. It is recommended diving elsewhere when waves are breaking. The erratic tidal changes that take place offshore make the waters experience a strong current called Moloka'i Express that can drag divers out to sea. A large wedged shape area right off the coast next to the cove is a reef coated with Sinularia Leather Coral, which is a coral that does not need much light to live, in which you can find many different species like echinoderms, slugs, corals, and eels. The shoreline cliff beyond the cove, ending at a point, should be the limit of any shore diving here due to the strong current and distance. There is also a narrow rift along the base of the cliff which was formed by a large section of rock that broke away from the land can be seen very well on a clear day.

Halona Blowhole Massive Waves From Halona Cove
Halona Blowhole Massive Waves From Halona Cove
This is a video of the geysers from the Halona Blowhole from the other side of Halona Coveto the south of the lookout point. The Halona Blowhole can be a dangerous place so it is not recommended to get to close to the blowhole because several people have died in this location. On this day in particular no one should even think about going down to the lower levels of the Halona Blowhole. When the waves are coming in like this at over 6 to 7 feet or more serious injury or death would be a likely scenario for anyone who got hit by a wave on the lower levels.
If you visit this spot be careful and do not underestimate the power of the waves and the danger in this area. A good rule of thumb is to avoid wet rocks when around this area of the island. While a huge wave can still hit rocks that are completely dry it should serve to show you where the water has been coming up to and around the area. If you are not familiar with the ocean then you are better off just watching from the high ground at the lookout point.
Some people have died here because they were screwing around and got too close to the blowhole and fell in and others were just fishermen that were swept out to sea. The wooden obelisk from the Japanese Casting Club represents a warning for the local fishermen that someone has died there in the past. While Hawaiian Islands are very beautiful, they can also be very dangerous.
Disclaimer: This video is in no way recommending that anyone go anywhere near the lower levels of the Halona Blowhole or the Halona Cove. So please stay away from this area and enjoy the view from the designated lookout point above the Halona Blowhole.
Please be careful not only at the Halona Blowhole, but anywhere on the Hawaiian Islands. Please enjoy the islands while you are here, but respect them too.
