Pekka Halonen: A collection of 41 works (HD)
Description: Pekka Halonen was born on 23 September 1865 in Linnasalmi, Lapinlahti, Finland, the son of Olli Halonen, a farmer, and Wilhelmina Halonen (née Uotinen). Halonen's father was himself an amateur artist who not only ran the farm, but also worked as a decorative painter on commissions from churches in neighbouring districts. Halonen often accompanied his father on these painting trips and was thus introduced into the craft of painting.
He studied in Helsinki at the Art Society's Drawing School for four years. He graduated with good grades and won a scholarship to study abroad. He went in 1890 to Paris, where he first studied at the Academie Julian and later under Paul Gauguin. He also studied at the Académie Vitti in Paris.
In 1895 Pekka Halonen married a young music student, Maija Mäkinen. In the beginning of their marriage, the couple lived in several places before settling down in a house with a studio on Lake Tuusula in Tuusula, Finland in 1895. Here the Halonen family lived in an imposing pinewood villa known as ‘Halosenniemi’. Halosenniemi was designed by Pekka Halonen himself and his brother Antti Halonen and was completed in 1902.
The building is now a museum that includes original furnishings and Halonen’s own art. On the shores of the lake where he resided an artists’ community flourished, helping to develop a sense of Finnish national identity. Halosenniemi was designed with the two-storey studios of Paris in mind, with high ceilings and tall windows in the studio, and second-floor living-quarters accessible by a set of stairs and a balcony that overlooked the studio.
Adjacent to the house Halonen built a sauna, which in typical Finnish tradition also served as a laundry. The landscape near Halosenniemi was an important source of inspiration for his art.In Tuusula Halonen had a wide circle of artist friends and relatives which provided him with a daily source of social and cultural stimulation.
Halonen and his wife had eight children, four sons and four daughters. Halonen died in Tuusula on 1 December 1933.

Arvo Part - Spiegel Im Spiegel - Pekka Halonen - Finnish Painter (1865 - 1933)
Pekka Halonen is one of the most beloved artists of the ‘Golden Era’ of Finnish art. A versatile artist and master portrayer of Finnish landscapes and people, he absorbed the latest international trends and ingeniously applied these to the depiction of Finnish nature. The countryside around Lake Tuusula provided him with a rich source of ideas and inspiration, and it was there that Halonen developed the distinctive style for which he is renowned.
Born on 23 September 1865 in Linnasalmi, Lapinlahti, Finland, the son of Olli Halonen, a farmer, and Wilhelmina Halonen (née Uotinen).

Lake Tuusulanjärvi
Since the beginning of the twentieth century the shores of Lake Tuusulanjärvi in Southern Finland have been an artist's colony. The houses of Jean Sibelius, Pekka Halonen, Juhani Aho, Eero Järnefelt, Joonas Kokkonen, and Aleksis Kivi are on the edges of the lake.
If you are keen on the domestic lives and work of 19th century cultural figures, you can head on to the impressive wooden villa of artist Pekka Halonen, the home of composer Jean Sibelius or the last residence of Aleksis Kivi.
Ainola
It is in this home, named for his wife Aino, that Jean Sibelius composed some of his most significant masterpieces. The house, built of logs from central Finland, was designed by architect Lars Sonck. Ainola's unique atmosphere impresses all its visitors, regardless of their age. The building resembles a home more than a museum, and the master's effects have been left exactly as they were at the time of the composer's death on 20 September 1957.
Halosenniemi (Cape Halonen)
Through the windows of this castle of a log building, a lovely view opens of an impressive cliff and the waves on the lake. The house tells the tale of Pekka and Maija Halonen's family and the famous Tuusula Lake Road artists' community, who made the studio their living room. The studio home is a Gesamtkunstwerk , where the execution of every little detail down to oven doors was supervised by Pekka Halonen.
Ahola
Ahola was the idyllic villa residence for the nationally renowned author Juhani Aho and his wife, painter Venny Soldan-Brofeldt. The unique Tuusulanjärvi artists' community had its heart at the Ahos', in Venny Soldan-Brofeldt's atelier. Ahola, opened to the public in 1997, is not a home museum; instead of personal belongings, the residents' artistic production is exhibited. Displayed items include books, scripts, and translated works.
Villa Kokkonen
Villa Kokkonen, the home of composer Joonas Kokkonen, is one of the few private homes designed by Alvar Aalto. It was completed in 1969, and it has been called a preliminary sketch of Finlandia Hall in Helsinki. The heart of the artist's home is the large study, which was designed around a grand piano. This musical-archictectural cultural destination from the second half of the 20th century beautifully complements the Lake Tuusulanjärvi artistic community.
