Hama Rikyu Onshi Teien - Japanese Garden, Tokyo ● 浜離宮恩賜庭園 (Revisited)
► Hama Rikyu Garden is located in Chuo-Ku, adjacent to Sumida Gawa river. It's another of Tokyo many fine gardens, which offers some good spots of its own, and those I'm gonna show you in this little feature.
Best points about Hama Rikyu are its many water features and bridges, and its sheer size - it is huge - you can spend quite long time walking around there. It also offers a nice teahouse where you can treat yourself with a real Japanese tea-ceremony.
Less good points - and perhaps due to the same reason (its size) - it is somehow too open and lacks the intimacy that many of the other gardens offers, so it somewhat invites less for exploration.
That said, it's still a really nice garden to spend an afternoon in central Tokyo. Easy access from Shimbashi Station, admission fee 350yen. - Enjoy!

Summer afternoon at Hamarikyu Gardens (Tokyo, Japan) 浜離宮ガーデンズ
A nice afternoon summer walk at Hamarikyu Gardens in the Chuo-ku ward of Tokyo. 浜離宮ガーデンズ 東京
【Tokyo Sightseeing#11】Japanese Garden Walk#3/Hama-rikyu Garden (浜離宮庭園)/Chuo-ku, Tokyo
Hama-rikyu Garden is...
This is the family garden of Tokugawa Shogun which functioned as an outer fort for Edo castle that retains a tidal pond of seawater drawn from the bay called Shioiri-no-ike and two duck hunting grounds.
The highlight is...
Shioiri-no-ike The pond has a style to draw in seawater and change its apperance by add and flow of the tide. The pond is the only remaining seawater pond from the Edo era within Tokyo. Lock gates are opened and closed according to the rise and fall of of the water level in Tokyo Bay, thus adjusting the flow of water in and out of the pond. salt water fish such as striped mullet, young sea bass, goby and eel inhabit the pond.
Nakajima-no-ochaya This is rest house where the shogun, ladies and Imperial Court nobles enjoyed a view that they were all very fond of. The present building is a restored one build in 1983. Here, you can enjoy powdered green tea and Japanese sweets.
300-Year Pine This pine was planted 300 years ago to commemorate the great renovations made to the garden by the 6th shogun Ienobu. The thick branches spread out low, still keeping a proud imposing view.
Kamoba (Duck hunting sites) There are two Kamoba, Koshin-do Kamoba and Shinsen-za Kamoba. They are both old, the former built in 1778 and the latter built in 1791. Several narrow trenches were dug along the pond of kamoba. To lure the ducks into the trenches, bait such as barn grass and millet and decoy duck are used and watch their behavior from a small opening. Hunters measure the timing and catch them using hawks or a net from behind the mound. (From Hama-rikyu Gardens Guide)

Hama-Rikyu Gardens, located near Shiodome subway station, is one of nine Tokyo Metropolitan Gardens.
Once a vacation home of a Daimyo, a Shogun, and the Emperor, the water level of the biggest pond inside this beautiful garden ebbs and flows along with the tides of the adjoining Tokyo Bay. Sitting in the teahouse in the middle of the pond, the Shogun and his attendants must have enjoyed a dynamic view of cherry blossoms in spring, fireflies in summer, a full moon in autumn, and a crisp, clear blue sky in winter.

Hama Rikyu Gardens - 浜離宮恩賜庭園
Around Tokyo blog:
Hama-Rikyu is an amazing park. Surrounded by lots of water and bridges all through, it just invites exploration. The best thing about it is the skyscrapers that are around it provide such great contrast - the peace of the park inside versus the busy city side outside. This park also has a very long history as at one point it was used as a hunting ground by the shoguns and the hunting blinds they used can still be seen.
A Contemplative Walk at Tokyo's Hama Rikyu Gardens
Right on the edge of Tokyo Bay, Hama Rikyu Gardens is a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. The gardens are within walking distance of Tsukiji Fish Market, and the open spaces of the garden makes a nice counterpoint to the crowded market. Originally built as a feudal lord's Tokyo residence during the Edo Period, the traditionally-styled garden stands in stark contrast to the skyscrapers of the adjacent Shiodome district and is perfect for a contemplative stroll.

Guided Tour of Hama-rikyu Gardens 「ガイドと行く浜離宮」
Hama-rikyu Gardens used to belong to the Tokugawa Shogunate. After the Meiji Restoration they were passed on to the Imperial Family. They used these places as a villa. It was not until after World War II that the gardens were open to the general public.
These gardens verge on Tokyo Bay, so each garden have a pond created by taking in water from the sea. Also, in these gardens you can see aged trees and various flowers. At this time of year cosmoses are blooming. They are quite impressive..

Hama Rikyu (浜離宮, Hama Rikyū), is a large, attractive landscape garden in central Tokyo. The traditionally styled garden stands in stark contrast to the skyscrapers of the adjacent Shiodome district.
浜離宮恩賜庭園 Walk in Hamarikyu Gardens, Tokyo JAPAN
Hamarikyu Gardens 浜離宮恩賜庭園 is a public park in Chūō, Tokyo, Japan. Located alongside Tokyo Bay and the mouth of the Sumida River, it was opened April 1, 1946. The park is a 250,165 m² landscaped garden surrounding Shioiri Pond, the park itself surrounded by a seawater moat filled by Tokyo Bay.
Originally, overgrown with reeds the waterfront area was used by the Tokugawa as a hunting ground. 1654 Tokugawa Tsunashige (the third son of Tokugawa) got there. He built here Country, where the terrain is separated today by a trench from the mainland. Built there it was named after his home Kōfu hama-yashiki 甲 府 浜 屋 敷 or Umite-yashiki 海 手 屋 敷.
1707 the garden was large rebuilt for now constant use and the Nakajima-, Umite- and Kiyomizu teahouse, a Kannon-do, Koshin-do, built the main gate along with fixed bridge. Later Tsunashiges son Ienobu in 1709 sixth Shogun, the plant was expanded and called Hama Goten 浜 御 殿.
During the period of the 8th Shogun Yoshimune (1716-1745), a forge and powder magazines were built in the garden and there were placed cannons. 1727 then fires ravaged the plant. Currently the 11th shogun Ienari (1787-1837) were built again teahouses: Tsubame-no-Chaya, Matsu-no-Chaya. Furthermore, resting places have been set up.
At the time of Bakumatsu the plant was no longer used. in 1866 the Commissioner for the Navy 海軍 奉行, Kaigun BUGYO) based there. It was planned for a residence, but did not come to carry out by the fall of the shogunate 1868th after the Meiji Restoration, the area fell to the court and since then is called Hamarikyu, Hama-foreign residence.
1878 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs established there a guest house, called Enryōkan 延 遼 館. This building, designed as a stone, next to the Rokumeikan was a well-known example of the adoption of Western architecture. 1889, the building was demolished. As a former president of the USA General Grant on his world tour in 1879 visited Japan, he was received in Hamarikyu in a local tea house from Meiji Tennō.
The Kanto Earthquake in 1923 and during World War II buildings were destroyed or damaged. 1946 the Park has been transmitted to the city and largely restored. 1952 the plant was declared a special historic site.
Visitors can also enjoy refreshment at a teahouse in Nakashima located in the middle of the pond in the garden that offers matcha and Japanese sweets in a tea-ceremony style. A peony garden, plum tree grove and cosmos fields have flowers for every season.
The traditionally styled garden stands in stark contrast to the skyscrapers of the adjacent Shiodome district.

Note: Extended version of the previously uploaded video of the Hamarikyu Gardens (
Another oasis in this busy city is how you could describe Hamarikyu and its beautiful gardens. Located a few meters away from the busy Shiodome business area, surrounded by buildings and nearby the mouth of the Sumida River, this garden is a typical Daimyo garden from the Edo period.
Opened to the public in April 1946 this 250,165m2 landscaped garden features many ponds including a tidal pond where fresh seawater enters from the nearby river, giving a unique touch to this hidden paradise.
Unfortunately, it’s not free, and you will need to pay 300 Yen to enter this park. Once you are in, the Hamarikyu Gardens feature three main attractions with a gorgeous tea house, the Nakajima No Ochaya, a large picnic area and a stunning flower field that attract thousands of people yearly to enjoy a rare view within the busy streets of Tokyo.
Finally, if you are fortunate enough, we strongly advise you to stay at the Conrad Hotel and ask for a room with a view overlooking this garden to make your stay in Japan really unique!

Kyu Shiba Rikyu Garden, Tokyo in 4K - 旧芝離宮恩賜庭園 - Japan As It Truly Is
Kyu Shiba Rikyu is one of Tokyo's finest gardens. It's one of a few from centuries ago that survives today. Discover what few see.
Many people see other gardens like Hamarikyu but never make it over to see Kyu Shiba Rikyu, which is tragic. It's only a 10 minute walk on foot away.
Kyu-Shiba Rikyu used to be part of the ocean but was reclaimed in the middle of the 17th century. It was a feudal lord's garden that changed ownership a few times and was bought by the Imperial Family in 1875. After the great earthquake in 1923, it was donated to the city of Tokyo. The pond garden island was modelled after the West Lake in Hangzhou, China.
Kyu-Shiba Rikyu is open daily 9 AM to 5 PM (last entry 4:30 PM) and closed Dec 29-Jan 1st. It's only ¥150 to enter. For those visiting both Kyu-Shiba Rikyu and Hama Rikyu, there is a combination ticket for ¥400.
