IWAMI - Land of the dancing serpents
Considered Japan’s oldest form of performing art, kagura traces its origins to ancient Shinto shrine festivals and involves both singing and dancing. In Iwami, all-night kagura has long been a fixture of the evening before the annual autumn festival, which is held to celebrate the harvest and the blessings of the sea.
There are about 30 kagura plays in total, most of them inspired by stories from Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, the two great records of Japanese mythology. Making use of fireworks, lights and other special effects, Kagura is also considered one of the more entertaining traditional Japanese arts. Performances usually take place on Saturday evenings at Sannomiya Shrine in Hamada, but do check the official website for the detailed schedule.

YAKULT VISIT TO RIZQ ISLAMIC SCHOOL 1.0
On 26th May 2017 (Last week), Rizq Islamic School was visited by Mr Hiroshi Hamada (Director of Yakult Malaysia), his team and TV3 Crews. It was an honour for the school to have such a good relationship with Yakult for our children’s’ health.
.
.
During their tour, we showed them our Kyushoku Program (Lunch Program) that has been practiced in several classes. To start with, Primary 5 classes have been chosen as the first batch for Kyushoku. For your information, we are the 1st Islamic school in Malaysia that has a partnership with Yakult. Our collaboration have been further integrated and adapted with the Japanese culture in our daily school education system and this system is going to be initiated by stages.
.
.
Kyushoku is a lunch program provided by the school system in Japanese elementary and middle schools. It is served during a specific time of the day where the homeroom teacher and classmates eat together.
The purpose of this program is teaching the students about food nutritions, respect, and manners.

J. Sanford Saltus Award 2019 presented to Mashiko
The American Numismatic Society Presents its 2019 J. Sanford Saltus Award for Excellence in Medallic Art to Mashiko.
With opening remarks by Dr. Gilles Bransbourg, Executive Director of the American Numismatic Society and a lecture on the origins of the award by Mr. Donald Scarinici of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Commission.
The American Numismatic Society is pleased to announce that Mashiko is the recipient of the Society’s prestigious 2019 J. Sanford Saltus Award for Signal Achievement in the Art of the Medal.
Mashiko grew up in her father’s home city of Kyoto, Japan. In 1962 she moved to the United States, and in 1964 to New York City. There, in 1993, she founded Medialia … Rack and Hamper Gallery, a showplace for contemporary medallic art. Seven years later she founded New Approach, Inc., a nonprofit organization that promotes emerging artists and curators and serves as a contemporary medallic-art research center.
As a prolific sculptor and medallic artist, Mashiko has received numerous awards, including the American Numismatic Association’s Excellence in Medallic Sculpture Award and the Grand Prix at the XXXV Fédération Internationale de la Médaille d'Art (FIDEM) Congress. Her stone sculptures, medallic art, silkscreen prints, and drawn illustrations are in numerous public collections around the world, including the Cincinnati Art Museum, the National Museum of Taiwan, Kyoto City Hall, the Queens Museum (New York), the American Numismatic Society, the American Numismatic Association, and the British Museum. Her many commissions, from organizations such as the British Art Medal Society and the New York Numismatic Club, include one for a memorial granite headstone for the feminist activist and author Betty Friedan. She has also been invited to submit designs to the U.S. Mint.
In addition to her extensive creative endeavors, she has also been a tireless teacher of her craft, offering courses in medallic and stone sculpture at The University of the Arts, Philadelphia, for two decades (1993 – 2013). Since 2001 she has also conducted private book-art, medal and urushi workshops.
“Mashiko is unquestionably deserving of the Award,” noted Saltus Committee Chairman Donald Scarinci, “not only for her wonderfully creative medallic art, but for all that she has done to teach and promote the medal as well. We are especially pleased to present the Award to her this year, the centennial year of the Award.”
The ceremony will take place at the ANS headquarters in New York City on Thursday, December 12, 2019, at 6 P.M. The Saltus Medal will be presented to Mashiko by ANS Executive Director Dr. Gilles Bransbourg.
The award was created with a grant to the American Numismatic Society by J. Sanford Saltus in 1913 to recognize and encourage excellence in the art of the medal. The first Saltus Award was presented in 1919; the silver award medal was designed by the prominent German-born numismatic and architectural sculptor Adolph Alexander Weinman.
Mashiko joins the ranks of other significant artists who have been awarded the medal including, among dozens of others, James Earl Frazer (1919), Victor D. Brenner (1922), Paul Manship (1925), Lee Lawrie (1937), Donald DeLue (1967), Kauko Räsänen (1986), Gustaaf Hellegers (2001), and João Duarte (2011), and Bogomil Nikolov (2017).
The American Numismatic Society, organized in 1858 and incorporated in 1865 in New York State, operates as a research museum under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and is recognized as a publicly supported organization under section 170(b)(1)(A)(vi) as confirmed on November 1, 1970.

Japan Trip Traditional Arts, Hagiyaki Pottery at the Yoshika Taibi Memorial Museum in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan
[014] Yamaguchi Hagi Yoshika Taibi Memorial Museum
Hagiyaki Pottery (萩焼) is among best pottery throughout Japan. In the early 1600s, this skill was brought to Japan from Korea. Hagiyaki Pottery was highly regarded for tea wares and was particularly popular in the Edo Period (1603 to 1867).
Often used in tea ceremony, the tea residuals cause the Hagiyaki Pottery to change colors. Tea enthusiasts were delighted of this changing color aspect. Even now Hagiyaki is higly regarded. Many stores in Hagi sell Hagiyaki tea wares, cups and bowls.
Located in the outskirts of the city, the Yoshika Taibi Memorial Museum features a large collection of valuable Hagiyaki Pottery. In addition, ceramic pieces and paintings done by the museum’s namesake artist/potter are displayed. Visitors have a chance to observe the Hagiyaki process in the workshop in front of the museum. Also, there is a store in front of the visitors where Hagiyaki wares are sold.

Japan Travel: Sea Lions, Otters, Penguins and More!! at the Miyajima Aquarium Hiroshima 34
Japan Travel: Sea Lions, Otters, Penguins and More!! at the Miyajima Aquarium Hiroshima 34
Surrounded by water, it seems only appropriate there would be an aquarium displaying its neighboring creatures on the island of Miyajima, located in the Seto Inland Sea in Hiroshima Prefecture. Located on the far western end of the island, the Miyajima Public Aquarium (宮島水族館) was rebuilt and reopened in August 2011 to offer even better information and services to all who visited the facility.
The aquarium houses creatures of the sea residing in both salt water and fresh water. Visitors can view sea life from the waters surrounding Miyajima, Seto Inland Sea as well as from various bodies of water around the world. Visitors will encounter various aquatic unique displays such as the oyster farm, showing how Hiroshima’s specialty, the oysters are grown. The aquarium has an interactive section for children to touch sea creatures such as starfish and other “safe” sea life. At designated times during the day, the aquarium hosts sea lion shows which bring laughter and delight to visitors of all ages. In addition to the sea lion show, the aquarium has a penguin parade for visitors to see the penguin at a closer distance.

Japan Trip: Examining Porcelain Art at the Ceramic Museum, Arita, Saga04
Arita Town located in Western Saga Prefecture, Kyushu, is a lovely town known for its local porcelain pottery, Arita-yaki. Over 400 years ago, Toyotomi Hideyoshi had brought several high skilled Korean craftsmen to Japan. One of these men discovered kaolin, the rock needed in producing porcelain in the Izumiyama Quarry. Thus, Arita Town became the first place in Japan to produce porcelain items.
The Prefectural Museum of Kyushu Ceramic Arts is located near Arita Station. It is the best source for local pottery. Various collections such as the Shibata Collection, displaying Arita pottery manufactured from 1603 to 1867, have been shown at this museum. The museum vows to contribute to the local cultural heritage as well as develop ceramics and pottery throughout the Kyushu region.
