UK Sailing the Solent & south coast, Southampton
In this Episode we head on west after having enough taking up wind, we keep ourselves busy with the spinnaker and practicing to gybe with the ATN tacker set up I made.
Still trying to work out the best location for the spinnaker sheet blocks, and currently they are on the pushpit, after sat watching people get on and off boats while rafted and the forces these rails take with some 18 stone hanging off the top of them :O the spinnaker loads seem insurmountable, let me know your thoughts??
Our plan for this episode is to sail up to Southampton before stopping off in Portsmouth to head on over to Brighton for a few days catching the tide as a gentlemanly hour.

RYA Training in the Solent Sea
The video was taken during my training session with Nomad Sailing, Gasport, UK. It was my first time sailing in the 50 degree latitude. Although it was summer, the weather condition changes pretty significantly, from Force 2 to Force 6, and we also got showered upon.
Naval Cadets on TS Mercury based on the River Hamble 1959
The Training Ship TS Mercury was one of a number of similar, mostly static training ships located round the coasts of Britain and founded during the Victorian period to provide boy recruits for the Royal Navy. It was founded in 1885 as a charitable venture by Charles Arthur Richard Hoare, a partner in the banking firm of C. Hoare & Co, with the objective of rescuing poor boys of good character and training them for naval service. Initially the facility was based at Binstead on the Isle of Wight where the boys lived in the barque Illovo. Over the years the establishment was increasingly managed by Charles Hoare's mistress Beatrice Holme-Sumner, with whom he was to have a son (Robin Hoare) and a daughter. The entire establishment was moved from Binstead to Hamble near Southampton in 1892.
In June 1898, Beatrice Holme-Sumner married C. B. Fry, the great England cricketer and all-round sportsman, and in 1908, after the death of Hoare, Fry became the Mercury's Captain-Superintendent. In 1914, the former Royal Navy sloop HMS Gannet was loaned from the Admiralty for use mainly as a floating dormitory and the old Illovo was sold in 1916. In 1950 C.B. Fry retired and handed over command of TS Mercury to Commander Matthew Bradby RN Rtd.
Its last Captain Superintendent was Commander R. F. Hoyle RNR who took charge in 1960 and operated it for eight years before the Mercury was closed in 1968. The 45-acre (180,000 m2) shore establishment was later cleared for a housing development. Memorials to the Mercury and the 5,000 boys it trained for service at sea in both the Royal and Merchant Navies are located at Hamble Parish Church and near the former Mercury slipway. HMS Gannet was towed out of the Hamble River in 1970 and is now restored and preserved at the Chatham Historic Dockyard. SOURCE: Wikipedia

Hamble-le-Rice is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Eastleigh in Hampshire, UK. It is best known for being an aircraft training centre during the Second World War and is a popular yachting location. The village and the River Hamble also featured in the 1980s BBC television series Howards' Way.
Hamble-le-Rice is located on the south coast of England, south east of Southampton. The village is situated at the tip of the Hamble Peninsula, and is bounded by Netley, Butlocks Heath, Bursledon, Southampton Water and the River Hamble. Although previously known as Hamble, Hamelea, Hammel, and Ham-en-le-Rice, the village's official name is now Hamble-le-Rice. The name Hamble is still in common usage. To the south of the village, lies the site of an Iron Age promontory hillfort, Hamble Common Camp.
The area is home to the remains of a defensive structure dating to the reign of King Henry VIII. Known as St Andrews castle investigations suggest that it consisted of a rectangular structure fronted by a gun-platform with a semi-circular layout. The whole thing was protected by a moat with a further two gun-platforms mounted on the Counterscarp. The structure was intact as late as the early 17th century.
Hamble-le-Rice was the home of an aircraft training centre during World War II for aircraft including the Spitfire, the Lancaster and the Wellington. The south airfield has long since disappeared and the north airfield has been partially developed as housing, the remainder is overgrown and owned by property developers Persimmon.
The Hamble Peninsula has one main access road, the B3397 (Hamble Lane) which is approximately 3 miles long and goes straight through the village. Hamble Lane has a numerous incidences of traffic accidents. and at its intersection with Portsmouth Road an AQMA exists to monitor Nitrogen Dioxide traffic pollutants. The B3397 is a very high volume road; the last traffic count in March 2003 shows around 16300 vehicles in a 24-hour period.
