Canterbury Stour Meadows - Help us save Wincheap Water Meadows (4K) Drone Video
I put this video together to help showcase the wonderful and tranquil Wincheap Water Meadows which are part of the broader Hambrook Marshes, but split by the Stour River.
The marshes provide a fantastic retreat from the busy and noisy urban city of Canterbury, yet is less than a mile from the city's centre. This tranquil environment is made possible by limiting how close development can encroach on the River Stour, helping to separate the bustle of roads and industry from this natural corridor which forms the marshlands. When visiting Hambrook Marshes, one may be forgiven for believing they are miles away from any town or city, as you walk or cycle along the footpath you are surrounded by rich vegetation which provides an important sanctuary for wild-life along with meadows and mash land for live stock. You may just make out Canterbury Cathedral's tower if your lucky!
However, Hambrook Marshes is only a green corridor, which is most evident when viewed from the air, and if development is allowed to encroach into this corridor, the perception of this landscape as a vast isolated and idyllic natural habitat will be shattered. Bio-diversity will be lost and with this one of Canterbury's most valuable natural assets will be forever, and needlessly lost.
Unfortunately, this is exactly what Canterbury City Council is trying to do, by developing a substantial extension to the Wincheap Park & Ride. The parking lot will take over the floodplain of the River Stour, which can be seen in this drone video.
The parking lot will extend from the mowed area of land adjacent to the river, through to the dense woodland area, ending at the A2 over-pass. The parking will only be about 16m from the edge of the river and clearly visible from the pathway parallel with the river.
