Comox Valley Farmers Market.mov
The Comox Valley Farmers Market provides the best of foods grown or made by the local farmers, bakers, and butchers from our valley. I wanted this film to be a fun and informative look at how a farmers market is made each week and what you might experience if you come to one...so play this film for the kids and see if they want to go!
The Comox Valley Farmers Market has begun a fundraising campaign to build a permanent farmers market structure for hosting the market each week year round. I am proud to partner with the Comox Valley Farmers Market and I hope this film will help make a significant impact in reaching their goals. Mangatoa Track to Leitch's Hut (Blue Mushrooms and Stelley08)
In the autumn of 2019, we (including Steve from stelley08) followed the Mangatoa Track to Leitch's Hut, a standard 16-bunk hut in Leitch's Clearing. The clearing is in the centre of the Whareorino Conservation Area, the largest forested area in the western King Country. Long-tailed bats, and Archey’s frogs are known to be in this area.
The hut is named after Sam Leitch, who was a soldier turned farmer when he was awarded the land after World War I. In 1910 the NZ government held a land lottery for five allotments of native forest. The winners were tasked with clearing them for farming. After World War I, of the eight farmers, only five returned. Sam Leitch's farm was the most isolated. He busied himself with clearing bush, planted macrocarpa trees, and built himself a home. His clearing remains there today.
The Mangatoa track has overgrown vegetation, windfalls and loss of marking in places, so it was quite an adventure. Hikers are advised to take extreme care. It is necessary to keep to the tracks to prevent the spread of chytrid fungus that affects the endangered Archey's frog, although for us that was not always an easy task. We did have a few interesting finds, such as weta, spiders, bellbirds, an interesting invertebrate that appears to be some kind of pillbug (please help with identification), and the elusive Werewere-kokako, aka Entoloma hochstetteri, New Zealand's blue mushroom! (En blå sopp).
Enjoy the sights and the folk metal soundtrack!
Here is Steve's (the stelley08) version of the hike:
Ceolskog is the solo folk metal project of Adam Helliwell from Hamilton, New Zealand, and the name given to his nature-themed YouTube channel. Ceol is an Irish word meaning music, and skog means forest in Norwegian and Swedish. No, I don't have a Patreon. But if you're a regular viewer, and you want to support me in some way (as well as getting something in return), then buy my music from here, the Ceolskog Bandcamp page:
