Hamilton is a town in South Lanarkshire, in the central Lowlands of Scotland. Hamilton serves as the main administrative centre of the South Lanarkshire council area. Hamilton is the fourth-biggest town in Scotland.
Hamilton sits 12 miles (19 km) south-east of Glasgow, 35 miles (56 km) south-west of Edinburgh and 74 miles (120 km) north of Carlisle, Cumbria. Hamilton is situated on the south bank of the River Clyde at its confluence with the Avon Water. Hamilton is the later county town of Lanarkshire which was preceded anciently by Lanark.
The Hamiltons constructed many landmark buildings in the area including the Hamilton Mausoleum in Strathclyde Park, which has the longest echo of any building in the world. The Hamilton family are major land-owners in the area to this day. Hamilton Palace was the seat of the Dukes of Hamilton until the early-twentieth century.
Other historic buildings in the area include Hamilton Old Parish Church, a Georgian era building completed in 1734 and the only church to have been built by William Adam. The graveyard of the old parish church contains some Covenanter remains. The former Edwardian Town Hall now houses the library and concert hall. The Townhouse complex underwent a sympathetic modernization in 2002 and opened to the public in summer 2004. The ruins of Cadzow Castle also lie in Chatelherault Country Park, 2 miles (3 km) from the town centre.
Hamilton Palace was the largest non-royal residence in the Western world, located in the north-east of the town. A former seat of the Dukes of Hamilton, it was built in 1695, subsequently much enlarged, and demolished in 1921 due to ground subsidence. It is widely acknowledged as having been one of the grandest houses in Scotland, was visited and admired by Queen Victoria, and was written about by Daniel Defoe.
Hamilton Barracks was formerly the Depot of the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) and the home of the 1st Battalion of the Regiment. The Regimental Museum is part of the Low Parks Museum. The Low Parks Museum is housed in what was a 16th-century inn and a staging post for journeys between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Recently refurbished, it is the oldest building in Hamilton and is to the north of the Palace Grounds.
By road the town is to the west of the M74 motorway, the main southerly link to England, which joins the M6 just north of Carlisle. The main route from Edinburgh is the M8, leaving at junctions 6 or 7.

Hamilton has three railway stations, Hamilton Central, Hamilton West and Chatelherault on the Argyle Line's Hamilton Circle. Hamilton Central is 22 minutes from Glasgow on the limited stop Larkhall-Dalmuir service. It was once served by the North British Railway, which had three stations in the area. Hamilton (NBR), Peacock Cross railway station and Burnbank. Beside Hamilton Central lies Hamilton bus station, providing links to surrounding towns and cities, also offering an express bus to Glasgow and also some parts of England.

The Ghost House of Sussex: £40million mansion is still being built by property baron and friend of Robert Mugabe 31 Years after work first began.
Nicholas Van Hoogstraten began the construction of Hamilton Palace in 1985 but work appears to have now ceased.
The British property baron's half-built home has now been nicknamed the Ghost House of Sussex by local residents.
Now living in Zimbabwe, Hoogstraten is an associate of Robert Mugabe and has invested millions in the country.
Stretched between rows of ancient trees and sprawling over green fields, this is the so-called Ghost House of Sussex - a massive £40million mansion left incomplete after work first began in the 1980s.
Property baron Nicholas Van Hoogstraten, who began the construction of Hamilton Palace, near Uckfield in East Sussex in 1985, has long since left British shores to further his business interests in Zimbabwe.
The controversial businessman, who was once jailed for paying thugs to hurl a grenade into a rival's home, started building the home - complete with its own mausoleum - in order to house his vast art collection.

HISTORY OF CRAIGNETHAN CASTLE:
Craignethan Castle was built by Sir James Hamilton of Finnart who was an illegitimate son of James Hamilton, Earl of Arran. A committed Catholic he served under James IV and was knighted in 1513 before his master's death at the Battle of Flodden. He then supported Regent John Stewart, Duke of Albany during the minority of James V and this included extensive travelling abroad in France and Italy. With the death of his father in March 1529, Finnart became guardian of his legitimate half-brother - James Hamilton, Earl of Arran (and later Duke of Châtellerault). His rise to power continued and he was assigned as Master of the King's Works where he used his continental experience to enhance multiple sites including Blackness Castle, Falkland Palace and Stirling Castle. He also built castles for himself - Cadzow and Craignethan were started around 1532 - with the latter designed from the start as an artillery fortification.
Situated some six miles north-west of Lanark, Craignethan was built upon a rock bluff overlooking the confluence of the River Nethan and Craignethan Burn. This steep scrap protected it on three sides whilst a deep ditch provided defence for the west. At the base of this ditch was a caponier - a feature common in later fortifications but state-of-the-art in the mid-sixteenth century. Such defences, the name of which was derived from capannata (little hut), enabled enfilading fire along the base of the ditch. It was perhaps a little too revolutionary for it lacked sufficient ventilation for the early firearms used within and was replaced with a transverse wall at the other end of the ditch. Despite these impressive defences, the defensive nature of the castle was undermined by the high ground that overlooked it from the west - described by one contemporary as situate in a hole, and commanded on every part.
Finnart's career came to an abrupt end in July 1540 when he was arrested and accused of plotting against the King. It was alleged he had designed a throwing machine and had attempted to kill James V whilst at Linlithgow Palace with a projectile. He was placed on trial, convicted and beheaded in short succession. The castle, along with the rest of Finnart’s possessions, was taken into Crown ownership. When James V died in 1542, James Hamilton, Earl of Arran became Regent. He restored his former half brother's estate to his heir with the exception of Craignethan Castle which he kept for himself. The castle was only ever a secondary residence for him however; his main seat was at Kinneil House (on the line of the Antonine Wall).
In 1554 Arran was replaced as Regent by Marie de Guise, mother to Queen Mary. He continued to be involved in Scottish politics however and was briefly exiled in 1566 for opposing the Queen's marriage to Lord Henry Darnley. By the time he returned in 1567, Mary's regime had collapsed and she was imprisoned at Lochleven Castle where she had been forced to abdicate. He aided her escape and hosted her at his castles of Craignethan and Cadzow on her way to the secure fortress at Dumbarton. However she was intercepted and her forces defeated at the Battle of Langside on 13 May 1568. Due to his support for Mary, Craignethan Castle was attacked and captured by James Stewart, Earl of Moray who was Regent for the young James VI. His hold was brief - Lord Claud, third son of the Earl of Arran, re-captured the castle utilising siege apparatus seized from the Government. Claud provisioned the castle for a counter-siege but the Government lacked the ability or energy to dislodge him. This was a mistake for 23 July 1570 Claud launched an attack from Craignethan that intercepted and killed Regent Moray at Linlithgow.
In May 1573 the fall of Edinburgh Castle ended the final resistance in support of Mary, Queen of Scots. The Hamiltons came to an uneasy peace with the Government but it was only fleeting - the Catholic family ultimately fell foul of the Protestant regime of James VI and were forfeit in 1579 with the surviving members fleeing to England. Craignethan Castle was slighted to prevent further military use.
John Hamilton (later Marquis of Hamilton), along with a number of other exiles and with the support of Elizabeth I, raised an army and invaded Scotland in 1585. Rather than fight, James VI capitulated and rescinded Hamilton's forfeiture. Despite Craignethan's defences having been destroyed, the Tower House remained in use and was probably occasionally occupied by the Marquis. It was sold to Andrew Hay in 1659 who built the new range in the Outer Courtyard. In 1815 the castle became famous as the inspiration for Tillietudlem Castle in Sir Walter Scott's novel Old Mortality.

In Part 5 of Birth Undisturbed, we meet one of the most recognised figures in the world today, Queen Elizabeth II, all whose children were born at home. The Queen quietly broke more than one major Royal birthing tradition, making her last birth in 1964 unique.
Historically for any birth of any potential heir to the throne, the room would be crowded with spectators which nearly crushed Marie Antoinette to death in 1778. The Queen was the first to bring all observation to an end with the birth of Prince Charles in 1948. For her last child Prince Edward in 1964, she also chose to forego the drugs of her first 3 births, and have husband Prince Philip by her side in the room familiar to her, the Belgian Suite of Buckingham Palace.
The image poses a timely question. In April 2018 a third Royal baby is expected, and rumour has circulated that Prince William and Kate Middleton are strongly considering a Palace homebirth that would restore the tradition after half a century.
