Finnmark 2010: Arriving in Hammerfest

More northern scenery as I approached Hammerfest, the northernmost town in the world. :-) Check out the Kvalsund bridge ... it was the longest bridge in Norway for almost 15 years, it's 741 meters long. Impressive. And at the very end of the video, don't miss Hammerfest church, it's a very unusual building. Lots more videos coming up from this trip! :-)

THE ULTIMATE TOURIST DESTINATION IN THE ARCTIC

Here, on the outskirts of Hammerfest municipality, there are plans to build an unusual and exclusive adventure center for international tourists. The center is inspired by earth houses, fishermen's cabins and the Sami people's coastal culture .When they had to sail long distances to fish, they often slept under their boats.

We have symbolized this through glass boats on the roofs of seven earth houses. In total there will be built 42 exclusive suites, where the Northern Lights and the stunning arctic landscape will come extremely close.

In addition, a common circular courtyard for activities, restaurant, bar, spa, sauna and more, will be developed. In the middle of the courtyard there will be a large lavvo (Sami tent) made of glass.

Mountain Hike in Hammerfest

Join us for a mountain hike in the northernmost town in the world! This guided walk passes Hammerfest’s distinctive parish church before heading out of town and up the slopes. You start walking up the “Gammelveien” (Old Way) a hiking path around the mountain Salen. This was the only way into town in earlier days. As you head towards the top, you’ll go through Hammerfest’s only forest, Jansvannskogen. A bid for the mountain’s peak requires a fair amount of fitness but the panoramas are certainly worth it. On a clear day you can enjoy incredible views of the islands Melkøya, Sørøya and Seiland. The route back down to the ship and a well-earned rest comes via the popular zigzag path to the town centre.

DAY 28 - TRONDHEIM, NORWAY

Really charming city of Trondheim! If you're ever here you have to visit the famous Nidaros Cathedral. Nidaros Cathedral was built in beginning of 1070 to memorialize the burial place of Olav II of Norway. This cathedral is full of symbology and amazing architecture.
Also my stomach lead me to truly the best so far Falafel/Kebab restaurant. You need to check them out and of course try their food if you ever in town.

I have always been inspired by Norway and wanted to share some of my knowledge on and appreciation for the efforts of its people. The recent bloodshed came as a complete surprise to many and serves to remind us of how important it is to maintain vigilance in this quest to promote peace. Oslo Harbour. Harpoon whaling. Norway has the biggest whaling industry in the world. Map showing the extent of Norway. If it turned 180 degrees on its southern axis, it would stretch as far as Rome.
Northern Norway bordering the USSR. Farming and rural life so far north. Even so far inside the Artic Circle Norwegians enjoy a high standard of living. Children playing in a school playground. Men building houses. Narrator says that the weight of snow compacts the logs together in the wooden houses. Bus trip to the next town. Boat is the main way of getting around. Small isolated communities receive a daily boat bringing news and supplies. The villagers wait eagerly for the boat. They unload milk churns and other supplies.
Fjords and coastal towns. A man carries a bundle of antlers. Norwegians are good hunters. The main export is fish. Norway has vast fishing fleets. Fishermen with their catch of cod, halibut etc. Nets haul massive amounts of Herring. Herrings are also used to extract the oil, another major industry. Fishermen are often also farmers. After the fishing season they return to work their farms. Images of ploughing the very steep mountainsides. River valleys are lush. Harvest time. Farm houses are often 100's of years old. Some churches in the country are as old as Westminster Abbey. Church wood carvings. A lot of buildings are built of wood as Norway has extensive forests. Felling trees and sawing timber by hand. Tractor drags logs through the snow.
River rapids. Steep waterfalls. Water is another powerful force that is in abundance in Norway. Norwegians use more electricity than any other country in the world. They manufacture electricity by building hydro-electric plants.
Factories use a lot of electricity. Industry now employs men that used to work on farms. The country is never far away, even for those Norwegians living in the city.
Oslo Town Hall. Paintings, murals and sculpture. Art is important to Norwegians. Gustav Klimt's massive sculpture, narrator says it took 30 years to complete.
Young Norwegians fishing, swimming, yachting, narrator says that as summer is so short Norwegians make the most of the sun. But they also like to play in the snow. Skiing, winter sports, even toddlers can ski.
Narrator says the first Sunday in March is an international ski jump competition (Holmenkollen) Families skiing.
NATO northern command near Oslo. Trucks pull skiers along via a rope. Soldiers need special training to be able to cope with the harsh conditions. A motorbike is fitted with skis. Sleds pulled by ponies, others pulled by dogs, others pulled by reindeer. Soldiers undergoing firing practice on the firing range. Norway's home guard. Narrator says many Norwegians give up their time to train with the armed forces. Family home, the wife is sewing. Narrator says that due to the isolation many people experience in such a remote country that family ties are very strong. Blonde haired children.
May 17th - National Day. Crowds waving flags parade past King Haakon VII. He stands in the Palace as the parade moves down Karl Johan's Gate in central Oslo.
