Anoka: Halloween Capital of the World
Anoka, Minnesota is the Halloween Capital of the World. That designation was official bestowed upon the city by Congress in the early part of the 20th Century. The tradition continues today as the city is celebrating its 93rd annual Halloween!

Anoka and the Tornado of '39
Nominated for a 2015 Regional Emmy® Award!
On June 18, 1939, a tornado ripped through Anoka, killing nine, injuring 144, and creating more than two million dollars worth of damage to the small Minnesota town. The events of that tragic day forever marked the town and its citizens. Now, 75 years later, this new documentary seeks to preserve that history through photograph, newly discovered home movies of the disaster, and new interviews with four survivors of the tornado, including a woman who lost her father that fateful day.
Construction Picks Up in Anoka-Hennepin District
When the new school year begins things will look different at Champlin Park High School. A $16.4 million school construction project is nearing completion.
The portable classrooms at the high school have been removed and will soon be towed away from the grounds. There will also be improvements to Champlin Park’s science and media center and an expansion to the strength and fitness area.
Construction started last October and will be finished this fall.
Champlin-Brooklyn Park Academy Expansion
Meanwhile, across the street, changes are coming to Champlin-Brooklyn Park Academy for Math and Environmental Sciences.
A $25 million expansion project at that school begins in 2020. It will have a two-story design, similar to Oxbow Creek Elementary in the Anoka-Hennepin School District.
The gym is being moved to the back of the school and there will be a new a courtyard. District officials say the school will look “brand new.”

Teenage Cruising in Downtown Anoka, MN Became Illegal in the 1980's!
Teenagers had been cruising around in their cars all across the USA from the 1950's until the 1990's, when everything changed. Back in the summer of 1989, the first of many new laws began banning people from cruising the city streets in the cars with no particular place to go. As an angry Cruiser, I contacted our local TV News department at KSTP CH. 5, and tipped them off to the new ordinance. Here is the segment. This was the beginning of the end of a great teenage pastime here in Minnesota.
Hanging out in Anoka, Minnesota - June 2012
Barb, Tammy and I hung out at Serum's and ate chicken wings and had some drinks. Then we headed to the Rum river to check out the big flooding still going on. We then met up with a HUGE cottonwood tree.
We go out to a park where the Rum and Mississippi rivers meet. It was a great time. If you're ever in Anoka, get to Serum's and check it out - it's awesome. Take in a little fishing too!

Brittany, an Anoka-Hennepin Student
Brittany is one of several students who sued Minnesota's Anoka-Hennepin School District. The students faced a constant torrent of anti-gay slurs and physical attacks due to their actual or perceived sexual orientation.
The lawsuit charged that the school district's gag policy - which hampered the efforts of teachers to address the harassment - stigmatized gay and lesbian students and helped perpetuate the abuse. In several cases, officials told the harassed students to lay low or try to stay out of people's way.
As a result of the lawsuit, the school district has agreed to adopt a wide-ranging plan to protect LGBT students from bullying and harassment.

No business like baking business for Coon Rapids DECA student
ANOKA, Minn. -- It’s no secret, running your own business is tough. It takes a lot of time, patience, money and likely a good marketing strategy. But a group of students at Coon Rapids High School are proving they may be future entrepreneurs of the community. They’re competing at DECA’s International Career Development Conference, also known as nationals, in Orlando, Florida in April.
Among the students is Dylan Plohasz-Pouliot. He’s a senior at Coon Rapids. But when he’s not preparing for DECA, you’ll find him working part-time at Han’s Bakery in Anoka where he’s surrounded by the aroma of fresh donuts, rolls and cupcakes.
“I wash dishes, I clean stuff, I bag breads. That’s about it. I work register sometimes,” said Plohasz-Pouliot.
Plohasz-Pouliot has been with the bakery since it opened a year ago. Since then, he’s been building his business resume and even came up with a marketing strategy for Han’s Bakery while competing at the district round in DECA.
“I did an advertising campaign which talked a lot about how we wanted to connect the bakery to the community,” he said. “We did a lot of things, like we had school lunches for the teachers at the middle school next door.”
The task was no cakewalk. Plohasz-Pouliot said the strategy involves handing out flyers to businesses in the communities like Pentair.
“We wanted to really connect us to the community more,” he said. The Han’s Bakery marketing strategy was his ticket to state.
Most recently at the state competition, Plohasz-Pouliot said judges presented him with a food and restaurant roleplaying scenario. After hearing the scenario, he had ten minutes to come up with a solution. After the ten minutes were up, he had five minutes to pitch his plan and win over the judges. Now, Plohasz-Pouliot is moving onto nationals along with six of his classmates. He said the chances of moving forward is about 1 in 100.
Deb Middleton is lead at Han’s Bakery. She’s seen Plohasz-Pouliot rise into a business leader over the last year.
“He’s been a very reliable dependable worker, he shows up does his job. If there’s any problem solving that has to be done, Dylan’s involved in doing that,” said Middleton.
Plohasz-Pouliot said his involvement in DECA and his experience at Han’s Bakery has taught him about what it’s like to work in the real-world.
“It’s nice to see how business can kind of connect you to people and cater to what they want and see the smiles on people’s faces. That’s what this place has taught me a lot. You see a lot of families come in here so it’s kind of the connection of the two that has made me want to go forward and pursue something in that area,” he said.
Plohasz-Pouliot and the other DECA members who qualified for nationals will compete with more than 10,000 students in Orlando on April 25th-28th.
