Hana lava tubes - Maui Hawaii
For a stop unlike any other, keep an eye out for Mile Marker #31 along Maui’s famous Road to Hana to experience the raw beauty and fascinating history of the Hana lava tubes on your next journey to The Valley Isle:
Less than a half mile down ‘Ula’ino Road just near Kahanu Garden and Wai’anapanapa State Park, the Hana lava tubes make for an interesting, stunning stop along a road trip where it can be hard to narrow down which stops are worth your time, and which you should skip.
Offering self-guided tours for around $12 per person daily from 10:30am to 4pm, guests under 5 are offered free entrance to this Road to Hana must-see. While you’re supplied with a flashlight and optional umbrella, we recommend wearing slip-resistant footwear, as the cave floor is almost always wet and can be slippery. Descend into the dramatic cave entrance, and have fun exploring the many sites of the largest lava tube on Maui, and the 18th largest in the world!
Formed approximately 960 years ago, it’s estimated that only about half of the cave has been explored to this day, holding such unique formations and areas like the fallout shelter, lava stalagmites, chocolate corridor of stalactites, and even blind cave insects like crickets, flatworms and millipedes, though there are no bats present inside the cave.
From 1950 to 1970, the cave was primarily used as dumping grounds for cow bones from a nearby slaughterhouse, later removed in the late 1990’s by the present-day owner of the cave, who was awarded the State of Hawaii Environmental Preservation Award for his effort. Spend some time learning more about the unique structures and history of this otherworldly attraction, and enjoy other property highlights like the Red Ti Botanical Garden Maze, or bring picnic supplies to savor on the stunning property grounds before continuing your drive to explore Hana’s endless natural wonders.
Restrooms are available onsite, and keep in mind that the average tour time is approximately 40 minutes. Visit our website to see a detailed guide of our recommended stops along the Road to Hana, and remember, it’s about the journey, not the destination. Aloha!

Hawaii - Driving Maui - Road to Hana in 30min
(5/19/2015)
This video provides a full accounting of driving conditions from the small town of Pa'ia along the the narrow, winding Hana Highway 360 to the southeast side of the island, several miles past Hana. Multitudes of narrow roads, 1 lane bridges, switchback and blind curves make this trek an all day affair as well as a hair raising adventure. Renting a convertible allows you to get the full experience, but be sure to you can manually shift the transmission in low gear for engine braking on those downhill stretches. If you are an overly cautious driver, please remember to pull off when possible to let locals and other faster traffic pass. Please be sure to mind yield signs identifying one-lane traffic zones and 5-7 car limit local courtesy to one-lane crossings.
BE WARNED: There are many hazards along this road besides the road itself, including but not limited to:
- Distracted Tourist Drivers - These drivers are not familiar with the road nor the hazardous driving conditions. They may drive slow, stop unexpectedly and not yield at one-lane crossings as required. Try to be patient with their ignorance.
- Frustrated Locals - Some locals have very little patience for tourist drivers. They tend to drive fast, loose, tailgate and will notify you to get out of their way. I recommend to let them pass as soon as possible and try to forgive with a smile.
- Random Pedestrians - Waterfall enthusiasts, photographers and other random pedestrians may find their way on bridges and in the middle of road. Watch out as they are unpredictable and do not always yield to traffic.
- Vegetation - Trees, grasses, brush and other plants may obstruct your view of opposing yield stops and other hazards. Limbs and other debris may find their way onto the road as the road is typically under a heavy canopy.
- Water and Falling Rocks - I've never come across falling rocks, but as the road is cut into the side of old volcanic rock and it rains a lot, both may find their way on the road.
LASTLY: This road can be a wonderful experience, however please know before you go. Be safe and a kind driver.

Hawaii's Most DANGEROUS Places to Visit!!
People dream of Hawaii vacations. Who doesn't want to take a trip to paradise? But Hawaii also has some of the most dangerous and scariest places to visit, including some that are SO deadly...they are illegal!
Join Zero2Hero as we visit Honolulu, the Haiku Stairs, the Spitting Caves...and more!
Don't forget to subscribe!
Watch out where you swim! Here is a list of newly discovered, creatures of the sea!!
Aloha! When most people think of Hawaii, they think of beautiful honeymoon destinations or interesting culture. While that’s mostly true, it’s also important to respect the power of nature, in all of its beauty, because it can turn on you in an instant. Find out exactly how many of these places in the Hawaiian Islands are so deadly that they are illegal to even visit!
Number 9: The Toilet Bowl.
In Hanauma Bay, the deadliest beach in Hawaii, there is a very unique and very dangerous tourist attraction…the Toilet Bowl swimming hole. This natural swimming hole was formed over many centuries as waves continuously crashed against the lava rocks that make up the coastlines of Hawaii. The waves pour into the pool with great force through a hole in the lava rock, but then the water is sucked back out the hole as the waves retreat. This phenomenon is what gave the pool its name, as the water rushing back out through the hole in the rock resembles a flushing toilet. The area of the Toilet Bowl is on a very treacherous coastline, and the trail leading to the pool is dangerous to walk along. The whole area is usually closed off due to several people having drowned or seriously hurt themselves while trying to swim the toilet bowl.
Number 8: Stairway to Heaven (Haiku Stairs)
The Stairway to Heaven, or Haiku Stairs, is a treacherous hiking trail that spans along the mountain range of Oahu’s Ko’olau. It is a steep and dangerous wooden stairway that totals 3,922 steps. It was originally built as an access trail by the US Navy to reach a top-secret radio facility that was used to contact ships operating in the Pacific Ocean. Although the area has been officially closed for some time, there are many hikers who do not take notice of the warning and no trespassing signs, as they want to be able to say that they climbed the Haiku stars.
To try and increase security around the stairs there was a guard stationed at the bottom to stop people before they start the climb, and in a one year period, during 2014, it was noted that 11 hikers got arrested for trespassing and were landed with a hefty $1,000 fine. And the reason it’s closed? Many deaths and injuries have occurred to hikers who have attempted this climb over the years.
Number 7: Kalalau Trail.
The Kalalau trail is thought to be one of the most incredible hiking trails in America. It is found on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, and takes the hiker through the natural wonder of the Na Pali Coast. It is a 22-mile hike that takes on a variety of different terrains and challenges such as wading through streams and balancing along tiny paths set into the steep cliffs. There are many beautiful things to see on this hike, just two miles in you’ll find the beautiful Hanakap’ai beach. Then, four miles in, is the breath-taking hanakapai waterfall. Going on beyond that point, though, things get much more dangerous. Areas of the trail, such as the infamous ‘Crawlers Ledge,’ are risky and dangerous for anyone to attempt, the tiny paths on the edge of the red clay cliffs are crumbling and slippery and the area often attracts heavy winds. There have been noted deaths on this trail, from hikers falling from the ledge paths down the cliffs, some 300 feet toward the ocean.
Number 6: Spitting Caves.
The spitting caves, at Portlock Point, Honolulu, are an ‘off the beaten track’ tourist spot, popular among the adrenaline seeking dare devils among us. The cliffs that rise up over the caves are a popular area for cliff jumpers to seek their big thrills. Sure, it can be said that any cliff diving spot is dangerous, but the spitting caves provide extra danger that is truly deadly. The way the current of the ocean flows, there are moments when the waves and swell get sucked dramatically into the caves with a loud bubbling, then whoosh back out again, back into the tide.
If the jumper does not time his flight just perfectly, they could get sucked into the cave with the current and slammed against the rocks before being spat back out into the ocean. The drop itself is around 55-feet and, even without the dangerous swells into the cave below, the jumper has to jump in at the right spot to avoid hitting any rocks on the way down. At least 7 deaths have been noted from attempting this cliff jump since November 2000.

Volcano-Steam Vent-Sulphur Bank-Lava Tube-Devastation Trail On Big Island, Hawaii-UHD 4K
You will see the Hawaii Volcano National Park, and find the Jagger museum, see steam vents (caused by lava under the crust of the earth). The Thurston lava tube was fascinating, we also visited the hidden underground tunnel and Devastation Trail.
At Sulphur Banks (Ha'akulamanu), volcanic gases seep out of the ground along with groundwater steam. These gases are rich in carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide -- the gas that smells like rotten eggs. Some sulfur gases deposit pure crystals at Sulphur Banks. Other sulfur gases form sulfuric acid which breaks down the lava to clay. This clay is stained red and brown with iron oxide.
The Jagger Museum is named after Thomas A. Jagger, and it contains many exhibits and artifacts on volcanology. The Thurston lava tube is a tube through the earth that was carved out by a flow of lava many centuries ago, and you must go through a rainforest jungle in order to reach this spectacular natural wonder.
Devastation Trail is a trail that leads through an area that was devastated by volcanic activity when Kīlauea Iki erupted in 1959. Seeing the cinders made us realize just how devastating the volcanic eruption was.
The Big Island is the largest and the southeastern-most of the Hawaiian islands, a chain of volcanic islands in the North Pacific Ocean. With an area of 4,028 square miles (10,430 km2), it is larger than all of the other islands in the archipelago combined and is the largest island in the United States.

Road to Hana! Maui Day #1
Hana Highway AKA Road to Hana
64.4-Mile-Long Stretch
The Hana Highway is a 64.4-mile-long stretch of Hawaii Routes 36 and 360 which connects Kahului to the town of Hana in east Maui. To the east of Kalepa Bridge, the highway continues to Kipahulu as Hawaii Route 31. Although Hana is only about 52 miles from Kahului, it takes about 2.5 hours to drive even when no stops are made since the highway is very winding and narrow and passes over 59 bridges, of which 46 are only one lane wide. There are approximately 620 curves along Route 360 from just east of Kahului to Hana, almost all of it through lush, tropical rainforest. Many of the concrete and steel bridges date back to 1910 and all but one are still in use. That one bridge, badly damaged by erosion, has been replaced by a portable steel ACROW bridge erected by the United States Army Corps of Engineers.

OPRAH PRIVATE MAUI RANCH ROAD IS VISIBLE FROM OUTER SPACE via google maps
According to Forbes, Oprah Winfrey is worth $2.7 billion. She owns a production company (Harpo Productions), a cable network (OWN), a magazine (O), Oprah.com and the Oprah Radio satellite station. She also owns estates in Montecito, California and Fisher Island, Florida; houses in Lavallette, New Jersey, Douglasville, Georgia and Telluride, Colorado; and assorted properties on the islands of Antigua and Maui. The latter includes 100 acres in Hana, 1,000 acres Upcountry (which boasts a small, terribly exclusive 12-room bed and breakfast) and a four-mile road.
And not just any road, either: Oprah's road is concrete and asphalt 12 feet across. Goodfellow Brothers paved it in December 2010. The road stretches from the water tank at Kealakapu Road near Piilani Highway in Kihei to Keokoa, near Haleakala Highway. It's a road locals have been waiting for 40 years — a potentially golden road that could radically ease traffic congestion in Central Maui.
That is, if the public could use it, which it most certainly cannot. The paved road, drainage swales and detention ponds will be privately maintained, stated a June 2009 Drainage Report on the effects of paving the road prepared by Wayne I. Arakaki Engineer LLC for OW Ranch, LLC, (the initials reportedly stand for Oprah Winfrey) and kept on file with the Maui County Planning Department. This is a private roadway and will not be open to the public.
OW Ranch paid for the road. It wasn't cheap, said OW Ranch agent Hugh Starr when asked how much it cost. He ultimately declined to provide a figure, and officials with both the county Planning Department and Haleakala Ranch said they either didn't know or couldn't provide the number (grading the road did require a $34,520 bond, which county civil engineer Lance Nakamura said represented just a fraction of the grading costs).
According to Starr, the road lies entirely on Haleakala Ranch land, which he said was the road's main user. But he added that OW Ranch and Kamaole Ranch (which is owned by Winfrey's former personal trainer Bob Greene, who is also listed as a manager for OW Ranch) retain access rights to the road that dated back to OW Ranch's original purchase of the 1,000 Upcountry acres from Haleakala Ranch. Starr called the original dirt and gravel road very rocky and dusty as well as dangerous, which the grading permit and accompanying drainage report makes clear.
We will paved [sic] approximately four miles of road 12 feet wide, states the county drainage report. Grades which is [sic] greater than 12 percent will be constructed out of concrete. We will construct drainage swales along the paved road, with plastic liner. All slopes will be graded at a 3:1 [ratio].
Hugh Starr referred to the road as a driveway that makes going in a lot easier, though he added that the road doesn't actually reach any dwellings owned by OW Ranch or Kamaole Ranch. It was an existing ranch utility road, he said. The Department of Water Supply, Maui Electric and Haleakala Ranch all use it.
Rumors about the road have flown about the island for months. During a Jan. 11 Maui Planning Commission hearing on OW Ranch's request to extend a permit for its Silver Cloud bed and breakfast in Kula, Chairman Jonathan Starr (no relation to Hugh) asked OW Ranch agents whether the road existed and if it tied into Winfrey's Silver Cloud bed and breakfast.
Tom Welch, an attorney representing OW Ranch, Kamaole Ranch and Silver Cloud, said the road did not connect to the Upcountry bed and breakfast.
The road is not visible from either Piilani Highway in Kihei or Haleakala Highway in Kula, Hugh Starr said members of the public still find their way to it.
It's hard to monitor the road, Starr said. There's some concern about the general public. It's kind of a double-edged sword because the road is very attractive to skateboards and joggers. We have definite security issues.
