Hanalei Beach - Hanalei Bay, Hanalei, HI - (March 2019)
Sometimes things don't always work out the way you think. The original plan for this day was to try to get the Northwest side of Kauai and see Tunnel Beach. We found out about halfway into the drive that the road to Wainiha was closed.
Since we were already in Hanalei, we decided to have some lunch and then lounge on the beach for a bit. The weather was less the cooperative today with little rain and wind mixed with the warm tropical sun for most of the day.

First D of Hanalei River Kauai
This video features the first descent of the Hanalei River in Kauai. EnviroAction Productions was filming for one of its pioneering paddling video productions - Paddlemania Worldwide. Kayakers on this epic adventure are Dave Pizzuti, Jeremy Signorini, Charlie MacArthur and Paul Tefft. Rivers in Kauai can go from 50cfs to 5,000 cfs in a matter of hours so paddlers must be ready for everything from a trickle to a torrent. The video also includes some early kite surfing action and surf kayaking on Kauai's famed North Shore. EnviroAction Productions is the source for all of your video production needs.

Kauai Island, Hawaii, USA 4K (UHD)
Kauai Island known also as the Garden Island. The tiny tropical island. This is one of the three Hawaiian islands that I decided to visit. I spent three days there, drove 315 miles by car and visited, incl. the places described below. My hotel was in the Kapaa area. It is geologically the oldest and northernmost island of the main Hawaiian Islands. Some parts of Kauai are only accessible by sea or air. Island is characterized by its wealth of lush, rich lands, including vast tropical rainforests, jaw-dropping mountains and stunning beaches. Part of Kauai’s unique charm is the fact that the island has remained relatively undeveloped.

Kauai, Hawaii 2010
Another great trip to Kauai and another batch of photos to sort through. Here are a few of my favorites. All photos taken with a Nikon D80. The ocean sound FX were recorded by me from a location near Anini Beach on the north side of the island. Photo locations included Polihali State Beach, Waimea Pier, Poipu Beach, Kapaa, Hanalei Bay, Ke'e Beach and a few other places. While in Kauai I stayed at a fantastic Ocean front condo in Kapaa. If you are planning a trip to I highly recommend checking out A great place with an incredit ocean view, centrally located and super reasonably priced. Great people to work with too!

The Hanalei River on the island of Kauaʻi in Hawaii flows north from the eastern slopes of Mount Waiʻaleʻale for 15.7 miles until it reaches the Pacific Ocean at Hanalei Bay as an estuary. With a long-term mean discharge of 216 cubic feet per second, in terms of water flow it is the second-largest river in the state; although its watershed of 19.1 square miles is only sixth-largest on Kauaʻi, it encompasses areas of the highest recorded rainfall on the planet and plunges precipitously from its headwaters at 3,500 feet above sea level. The lower, flatter portion of the river flows by Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge and many taro farms .The Hanalei River provides habitat for a number of amphidromous species, including gobies , two native species of crustacean, the hīhīwai , and in its upper reaches, a threatened species of highly adapted snail .

Okolehau Trail, Hanalei Kauai Hawaii
Okolehau Trail is referred to as The Puffer. It gains 1250 feet in 2.5 miles. The first 2/3 of a mile the Okolehau Trail is really the remains of an old dirt road. You climb, climb, climb. The footing is generally good unless a good rain came through recently. There are 2 major plateau's on the trail. The first nice overlook
is at 2/3 miles next to the tall powerline pole. At the one mile mark look for this unusual tree that I call Woody. Keep climbing another 5 minutes and you reach the first plateau which is flat and has ti plants on it. You have sweeping views of Hanalei Bay, Hanalei Pier (South Pacific), the Kilauea Lighthouse, Princeville, the taro fields you left behind, and Bali Hai. The next .25 of a mile is pretty flat then at the 1.5 mile mark it turns steep again and is far more muddy but the reward is ahead.
At the END of the Okolehau Trail is another plateau and you see everything you did before plus the Hanalei River coming out of the mountain valley and a close up view of all the mountains including Wai'ale'ale. In total you see 1/5 of the entire island!
You will find the Okolehau Trail off the main road from Princeville. Go toward Kee Beach on 560 leaving Princeville. Once you get to the bottom of the hill and cross the first one lane bridge take an immediate left by the taro fields. You will go down the road about ½ a mile to a parking lot across from the start of the trail. There are usually plenty of hiking sticks leaning against the bridge.
Don't forget to stop at the Hanalei Overlook on the way back up the hill to see where you climbed.

Kauai Luxury Vacation Villa in Princeville at Hanalei Bay
From the moment you arrive, you immediately sense the Aloha spirit and the otherworldliness of Kauai's North Shore; Hanalei Bay Villas' surroundings are stunning and beyond beautiful. The unique charm, ideal location, dramatic beauty, and peaceful serenity provide an island experience to be treasured.
Hanalei Bay Villas #29, a private free standing home, is ideally situated above a tree top canopy revealing expansive views of the awe-inspiring North Shore Mountains adorned with waterfalls and often rainbows. The home also opens onto an ocean bluff, within sight and smell of the sea.
Just beyond the front door is a grassy overlook considered the best location on the island to view the Bali Hi sunset; provides an ideal vantage point to witness humpback whales breaching and world class surfers in the breaks just off the coastline. Of course, the sparkling Pacific colors are always spectacular and, at times, you are likely to see dolphins, sea turtles, and an occasional monk seal.
There are three beautiful public beaches within close walking distance. A hiking trail leads to Pali Ke Kua Beach which is a long, beautiful stretch of beach divided by a rock outcropping. During calm seas you can swim around the outcropping to what is known as Hideaways (seen on the aerial photo directly below the villa); a great snorkeling cove. Puu Poa Beach on Hanalei Bay, a picturesque white sand beach located in front of the St Regis Hotel, can be accessed by a 191 step staircase or via resort elevator. During low tide you can wade across the Hanalie River to Hanalei Pier & Beach Pavilion. Here you can rent kayaks, boogie boards, surf boards, and standup paddle boards.
Within the Princeville community you will also find a jogging path, Queen's Bath trailhead, Sea Lodge Beach, The Prince and Makai golf courses, healthy club and spa, tennis and basketball courts, restaurants, library, playground, shave ice and ice cream stand, boutiques, post office, and grocery store.
Truly, all the wonders of the North Shore are within two-twelve scenic miles of the villa; including many more fabulous beaches, Kalalau Trailhead, the quaint town of Hanalei, Tunnels, Limahuli National Tropical Botanical Garden, 'Anini Beach Park, Secret Beach, Kilauea Lighthouse...
This completely remodeled home includes state of the art kitchen, contemporary baths, new flooring, tasteful high-end furnishings, and luxurious bedding. It is sophisticated, comfortable, and laid-back. Numerous windows, cooling trade winds, ceiling fans, and cathedral ceilings keep the home light, fresh, and comfortable throughout the day.
