Kitakami Station is served by the Tōhoku Shinkansen high-speed line from Tokyo to Shin-Aomori, and also by local services on the Tōhoku Main Line and Kitakami Line. The shinkansen platforms in September 2009
The local portion of Kitakami Station has an island platform and a single side platform. However, the side platform is cut, forming a partial bay platform, so that the platform effectively serves two tracks. The Tōhoku Shinkansen portion of the station has an island platform and a single side platform serving three tracks. All of the platforms are elevated. The station has a Midori no Madoguchi staffed ticket office.

Resilient and Vibrant Rural Communities in Japan and the U.S.
Resilient and Vibrant Rural Communities in Japan and the U.S.
April 2017—March 2019
Iwate, Niigata, Ehime and Shimane, Japan; West Virginia, Ohio, Nebraska and New York, USA
With a low birthrate, an aging society, and the decline of primary and local industries, the situation in regional areas in Japan has been dire for some time. In fact, the rising inequality across many sectors between urban areas and non-urban areas is a relevant topic in many developed and developing nations, as they are experiencing similar demographic and economic changes. This shift is also affecting communities throughout the United States, although not as dramatically as in Japan.
To reduce this gap, Japan Society and the Japan NPO Center are joining forces for Resilient and Vibrant Rural Communities in Japan and the U.S. to bring together leaders in Japan and the U.S. dedicated to the revitalization of rural areas and small towns experiencing economic stagnation and declining population. Leaders from the U.S. will visit Niigata, Iwate, Shimane and Ehime Prefectures in October 2018. Leaders from Japan visited West Virginia, Ohio and Nebraska in October 2017. Through the sharing of best practices that build back community resilience and vibrancy, the project contributes to leadership development through a unique international learning exchange and experience, and strengthens the work and impact of the participants’ organizations and their communities.

25 • Golden Week - Aomori
My Golden Week ended with one of the greatest experiences of my time in Japan: I got to visit my best friend's house, meet and hang out with her family, and see parts of Japan in the springtime so beautiful and green I couldn't even imagine. And, of course, I got to visit the beach and feel a real salt breeze for the first time in a very, very long time.
Photos of this adventure can be seen here:
成田の家族へ、
この経験を本当ありがとうございました。全然忘れられません。いろいろお世話になりました。絶対にまた会いたいです!
