Hokkaido Japan Day 8 | Nemuro, Japanese Shrines and Hokkaido Cheesecake
This is Day 8 of living in a van in Japan, driving all over Hokkaido Japan. Today we went from Nemuro to cape Nosappu. Today was a little different as we didn't sleep in the van! We actually booked into a nice little B&B because it was Aska's birthday. We found a quiet shrine, ate lots of crab and much more.

Japan Trip 2013 Train to Nemuro
Getting to mom's hometown of Nemuro on the easternmost tip of Hokkaido takes most a day. We take a JR train from Sapporo to Kushiro, then a tiny one-car train on a narrow track to Nemuro. It's a beautiful scenic ride.

Cape Nosappu
Cape Nosappu in Nemuro City is the easternmost point of Hokkaido. It is also the easternmost point of Japan which is accessible to the public. At the tip of the cape stands the Cape Nosappu Lighthouse. Built in 1872, it is the oldest lighthouse in Hokkaido. On clear days, you can see the islands of the Northern Territories from the cape. It is also a popular spot to see hatsuhinode or the first sunrise of the year.

2012.8.15根室花咲港からさんまの大型船が出漁！
国後島に連行されたタラ漁船 ロシア側が5日ぶりに解放 根室の花咲港に到着 (20/01/20 17:00)
1月15日、北方領土周辺でロシア国境警備局による臨検を受け国後島に連行されていた、北海道根室市のタラ漁船が20日朝、5日ぶりに解放され、先ほど根室市の港に到着しました。
ロシア側から解放されたのは、根室市の歯舞漁協所属の「第68翔洋丸」です。
第68翔洋丸は1月15日、色丹島付近の海でロシア国境警備局の臨検を受け、操業日誌に記載された量を上回る1100キロ以上のエイやカレイが見つかったとして、国後島に連行されていました。
ロシア側によりますと、既に裁判は終わり、罰金が払われたため、翔洋丸を解放したということです。
翔洋丸は先ほど午後4時すぎに根室・花咲港に到着し、船員らは家族や関係者との再会を果たしました。
乗組員6人の健康に問題はなく、北海道や海上保安部は今後乗組員から詳しい事情を聴くことにしています。
乗組員：「乗組員の健康状態に異常はありません（Q．戻ってきてほっとしている? ）そうですね」

【根室市】さんま祭り～The Neguro Sanma Festival～【つかみ取り】
2015.9.20 第23回さんま祭りが北海道根室市で開催されました。
そこで、さんまのつかみ取りというイベントをやっていたのでご紹介します。まず驚いたのが、このお祭り北海道の端っこにも関わらず全国各地から訪れる方が多いこと。またさんまのつかみ取りは500円で30～40匹普通に取れる（漁協の方がサービスしてくれる笑）ことや100円の容器を購入すれば炭火が設置してある会場でさんまが食べ放題ということなどなどお得感満載のお祭りである。

Getting a Hanasaki Crab in Washo Market
Hanasaki crabs or Spiny King Crabs are caught in large numbers in Kushiro subprefecture, hauled in at Hanasaki Port, Nemuro.
I didn't see live swimming Hanasaki crabs in Sapporo the time I visited Curb Market. I think, Kushiro will be ideal if one wants to get a live Hanasaki crab.

STORYLINE:
Russian officials on Wednesday released two Japanese fishermen held since their boat was seized for allegedly fishing in Russian waters in an incident in which one crewman was killed.
The Russians handed over the fishermen, Akiyoshi Kawamura and Haruki Kamiya, on Wednesday afternoon.
A patrol boat docked at Hanasaki Port, Nemuro city, Hokkaido, northern Japan while the families, friends and colleagues waited in the rain for the return of two men.
The captain, 59-year-old Noboru Sakashita, who has reportedly assumed all blame for his boat's alleged violation into Russian territory, remained in Russian custody.
Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe told reporters in Tokyo that the Foreign Ministry had again been instructed to ask Russia to release Sakashita and his vessel soon.
On August 16, a Russian coast guard boat fired at a Japanese vessel that was allegedly trespassing in Russian waters off Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido, killing a Japanese crab fisherman.
Russian authorities seized the fishing boat, along with its captain and the two crew members.
The incident took place near the southernmost of four disputed islands that are claimed both by Japan and Russia, called the southern Kurils by Russia and the Northern Territories by Japan.
The Soviet army seized the islands near the end of World War II.
Kunashiri Island, the southernmost island in the chain, is administered by Russia but claimed by Japan.
Each country claims the fishing boat was in its own territorial waters at the time of the shooting.
The island dispute has prevented the two countries from signing a peace treaty formally ending World War II hostilities.
The surrounding waters are rich in fish and believed to have promising offshore oil and natural gas reserves, as well as gold and silver deposits.

On the train to Nemuro
Video # 8 of 34 of our 2011 trip to Japan. It takes almost four hours and two trains to get form Sapporo to Nemuro, my mom's home town. First we take a regular commuter-style train to Kushiro, the second-largest city in the northern island of Hokkaido. Then we take an hour-and-a-half ride on a one-car, narrow gauge train that runs through great scenery, from farmland to hills to forests to alongside the ocean. Fall has definitely arrived in Hokkaido, although the rest of our trip, especially in Kyoto, was hot and summer-like. Check my blog, nikkeiview.com
