“Hanayome Noren” (Bridal Curtains) from Nanao, Ishikawa Prefecture | nippon.com
The town of Nanao in Ishikawa Prefecture is known for its Seihaku Festival, one of the events collectively inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2016. Some 50 picturesque shops line Ippon-sugi Dōri, a street in the historic old town that dates back more than 600 years. The old-fashioned storefronts lend a touch of authentic antiquity to the festival scene.
Hanayome noren, or “bridal curtains,” have been part of local tradition since the mid-nineteenth century. At her nuptials, a bride passes through a curtain hung at the butsuma room where the Buddhist altar is placed and where the ceremony will take place. At Hanayome Noren-kan, the Bridal Curtain Museum , brightly colored curtains made over some 150 years from the Meiji period (1868–1912) to the present day are on display.

Museum in Nagano Prefecture Houses Paintings from Hokusai’s Late Years | Nippon.com: Japan in Video
Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849), Japan’s world-renowned woodblock artist, also produced masterful brush paintings. A number of these works now form the core of the collection at the Hokusai Museum (Hokusai-Kan) in Obuse, a small town in Nagano Prefecture. When he was in his eighties, Hokusai made four visits to Obuse at the invitation of Takai Kōzan, a local magnate, and devoted himself to painting. At Kōzan’s request, he painted festival floats for two local districts, Higashimachi and Kanmachi. Particularly striking are the images of a dragon and a phoenix that he painted on the ceiling of the Higashimachi float. Both paintings rank among the masterpieces of Hokusai’s final years. The two floats—Hokusai’s only three-dimensional works—are on permanent display at the museum.

Train from Kanazawa to Nanao March 20th 2014 9:37
This is the Nanao train. The delay in starting is due to the guard holding it up to allow a late passenger to make it on. Understandable when there is one train an hour. Shot handheld.

Abare Matsuri: A Festival of Grand Lanterns and Towering Torches | Nippon.com: Japan in Video
Every summer local communities on the Noto Peninsula hold kiriko festivals. The particulars of the events vary greatly from one site to another, but they all feature the energetic carrying about of kiriko floats, which are decorated lanterns mounted on large wooden frameworks. The Noto kiriko festivals are a tradition dating back the Edo period (1603–1868).
The Noto kiriko festival season starts in Ushitsu, a seaside community in Noto-chō, which puts on a two-day event called Abare Matsuri, literally, “Get Wild” Festival, on the first Friday and Saturday of July. During the day on Friday, lantern floats are paraded around the town, and that evening the illuminated floats borne by teams of enthusiastic carriers circle the flames of five pine torches showering sparks from a height of seven meters.
This festival originated some 350 years ago when Ushitsu was suffering from an epidemic. Residents enshrined a branch spirit of Gozu Tennō, a disease-averting deity worshiped at Yasaka Jinja in Kyoto, and paraded a grand lantern to give thanks for the cure of those affected.

Godzilla Seen Breathing Fire on Cape Shiosezaki, Akita Prefecture | Nippon.com: Japan in Video
The rocky coastline of Cape Shiosezaki faces the Sea of Japan on the south side of the Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture. Definitely and the most distinctive feature of this coastline is “Godzilla Rock” (Gojira iwa), so named in 1995 because of its striking resemblance to the cinematic monster. The shore is full of rocks deposited by an erupting volcano and weathered by the wind waves over the ages. There are so many, in fact, that the Godzilla Rock can be hard to find during the day. But at sunset the silhouette of the monster stands out clearly against the western sky. And in October, when the sun sets by the outcropping, a trail of glowing clouds can make it look like Godzilla is blowing flames from his mouth—a great photo opportunity for visitors. Other nearby formations include “Godzilla’s Tail” and “Gamera Rock.” The area is also dotted with spots for playing on the rocky waterfront, making it a popular destination for families with children.
