New England, USA: Winter in the Berkshires
Walking along Stockbridge High Street is like stepping back in time when the Berkshires in Massachusetts was home to the celebrated artist Norman Rockwell. As we explore the villages that make up the region we visit: the Museum that displays Rockwell's work documenting the simplicity of his life and times in New England; Gilded Cottages once homes to the wealthy; spend time on the ski hills at Jiminy Peak; and take in the Hancock Shaker Village. Finally we travel to the outskirts of the Berkshires to Old Sturbridge Village Park -- an interactive museum that gives insight to the early 19th century. A reason that the furniture and the boxes and virtually every piece of household good that the Shakers made, from a humble dustpan to the most beautiful credenza, was so perfect, is because they believed that work was an important part of their spiritual life, an important part of prayer, if you will. And it was important to devote yourself fully to the making of those household objects, the most humble to the most high and mighty, as it was in religious ceremonies.

17. Medium shot Steve Griselli making boxes in his workshop

The wooden box business was very important in colonial America, before the mass production of sheet metal, before plastic of course. Household dry goods were in a wooden box of some kind. What the old Shakers did, they just made a better wooden box, for an existing marketplace.

I had been a cabinetmaker for many years, doing furniture. But something about the boxes, I don't know what it is - but it became a passion to learn as much as I possibly could about this craft. I wanted to be, I wanted to be a technical virtuoso at this business. I wanted to know everything I could find out about this. And I'm not finished yet, but I'm on the way.
22. Medium shot boxes inside built-in cabinet

It's always interesting to learn about American culture and find something that's 200 years old. And it's also very nice, very peaceful, it's very good for the children, because they can experience how people lived at the time.

I guess the basic thing that you can say about Shaker design is that it is timeless. It goes with antiques, it stands on its own, it can be mixed with contemporary pieces and it always looks great.

Water Turbine at Hancock Shaker Village, MA
My school took a field trip today to Hancock Shaker Village in Massachusetts. The location of this Village in not far from the, I believe, State boarder of Columbia County, NY (South of Albany, NY) and Pittsfield, MA. But, this is the water turbine(s) in one of the buildings in the area. I know it's not a lot. But, it's what I got. Enjoy! SUBSCRIBE
