Handam Seaside Trail in Jeju Island | Walking Tour South Korea 4K UHD
Explore the beautiful beach in Jeju Island!
Let's walk along the Handam Seaside Trail with me!
From Aewol-ri Village on the northwestern tip of Jeju Island to Gwakji Beach in Gwakji-ri, it is constructed along the coast. It was created in 2001 by the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province to provide more familiar access to the island's excellent natural resources, the sea, as part of its coastal readjustment project plan.
A 1.2-kilometer-long walkway is built as close to the sea as possible along the winding coastline. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll while enjoying the vast blue sea, making it a popular attraction. It is one of the Jeju's hidden wonders 31 that the Jeju city government announced in July 2009 after selecting 31 representative places around the city in addition to the existing tourist attractions.

Hamdeok Beach JEJU, SOUTH KOREA + Geomonoreum Trail (WeWillNomad)
The thing with Hamdeok Beach is that if you arrive during high tide, you’re likely to think that there isn’t much of a beach.. but when the tide goes out you’re left with an amazingly huge sand bar with plenty of space for people to spread out, tide pools for kids to play in and rocks to hunt around for crabs and shellfish.
Driving around the island is by far the easiest way to get around as getting around isn’t so easy via public transport. However, if you have time and patience the public bus system can be perfectly adequate and cheap. Especially reaching the main centres around the island is fast and efficient with regular buses connecting them. The challenge is to reach inland or more remote spots. If you're located in Jeju City rather rent a car or scooter if you plan on inland excursions - to maximise your time.
In this video, we visit the Jeju World Natural Heritage Centre to hike the Geomunoreum trail. You can find more information here:
There are so many oreum (parasitic cones) on Jeju Island that, climbing one a day, you couldn't see all of them in one year. Geomunoreum is considered to be the foremost among them. Its name means black oreum and it was derived from the dense forest in its crater that has a unique black tint. Its summit is 456 m above sea level and has a circumference of 4.5km. At the summit lies a deep, horseshoe-shaped crater with a large opening in the northeastern rim. To see Geomunoreum, all visitors must sign up for a guided tour at the Visitor Center.

Seopjikoji Seaside in Jeju Island | Walking Tour South Korea 4K UHD
Explore the beautiful Jeju Island!
Let's walk along the Seopjikoji Seaside with me!
Seopjikoji is located at the end of the eastern shore of Jeju Island and boasts a fantastic scenery especially in April when yellow canola flowers are in full bloom. Seopji is the old name for the area, and Koji is Jeju dialect meaning a sudden bump on land. On top of the hill stands Hyeopja Beacon Fire Station, reaching 4 meters in height with a width and length of 9 meters.
Seopjikoji was the filming site of Gingko Bed, The Uprising, One Thousand and One Nights and other Korean TV dramas. Nearby attractions include Jeju Folk Village and Udo Island.

Oedolgae Rock in Jeju Island | Walking Tour South Korea 4K UHD
Explore the beautiful beach in Jeju Island!
Let's walk along the Oedolgae Rock with me!
On June 30, 2011, the Cultural Heritage Administration designated it as a state-designated cultural asset, along with Cheolso-sok and Sanbangsan. It is 20 meters tall, standing at the southern foot of Sammaebong Peak and standing alone in the middle of the sea, it is said to be called Odeolgae. The rocky islets, created when the island's appearance was changed by a volcanic eruption 1.5 million years ago, are home to several small pine trees at the top. It is a shape of a gibstone cliff that is too dangerous to climb, and looks different depending on the direction you see.

Beautiful Hyeopjae Beach in Jeju Island | Walking Tour South Korea 4K UHD
Explore the beautiful streets in Jeju!
Let's walk along the Hyeopjae Beach in Jeju Island with me!
Clear waters and white sands are combined with broken shells, this long and beautiful shoreline offers a mesmerizing view of low-tide, with Biyangdo Island floating in the distance. The blue translucent water creates the illusion that one might even reach the island on foot. This year, the beach is open even during the night time, offering another tourist attraction.

Jusangjeolli Cliff in Jeju Island | Walking Tour South Korea 4K UHD
Explore the beautiful streets in Jeju!
Let's walk along the Jusangjeolli Cliff in Jeju Island with me!
The columnar joints near the coast in the eastern Jungmun Tourist Complex, where the waves breaks and dark red hexagonal stones make up tall layers, is considered a gift of nature and was designated as Natural Monument No. 443 (12/27/04). If you stand in front of the joints you can see the waves hitting the stones and breaking into white bubbles, which feels as if they carry the sad stories of stone carvers, and the scenery is incredible as when the waves are turbulent they reach a height of about 20m. The place is becoming ever more popular with tourists as they walk around and look at the incredible scenery along with the fresh scent of the sea.

제주도 - Walking around Jejudo Island, Korea
Jeju-do, also known as Jeju Island is the only self-governing province in South Korea, meaning that the province is run by local natives instead of that from the mainland. The island of Jeju was “formed by the interruption of an underwater volcano approximately 2 million years ago.” and is home to pristine nature and exquisite beaches.
In 1962, the South Korean government established the Korean National Tourism Corporation (KNTC) to monitor and regulate internal and external tourism and it was later renamed to the Korean National Tourism Organization (KNTO). While Korea lacks abundant natural resources, tourism is an entity that generates income nationwide for South Korea. In Jeju-do province, specifically, tourism has proven to be beneficial and has been a growing contributor to the economy. Jeju Island often compared to that of Hawaii, “is the winter destination for Asian tourist seeking warm weather and beautiful beaches.”
The island is home to 660,000 people but hosts 15,000,000 visitors per year. English is not widely spoken in Jeju and as a matter fact, “the local dialect is different enough from Korean that it is recognized as a distinct language.” “Until recently, Chinese travelers accounted for 80% of foreign travelers,” however, due to the installation of THAAD (The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) system in Korea, Chinese travel has he dwindled drastically. “THAAD is supposed to shield against North Korean missiles” however China views it as a security threat. Though in the past year [2017] tourism has declined sharply, visits to Jeju continue to be a vacation destination for Asia. There are no visa requirements for visitors staying up to 90 days and future plans to build a second international airport has been discussed. Due to the decline of visitors caused by China’s travel ban to Korea due to the concern of THAAD, talks and discussions continue to be held regarding a second airport to service over 45 million people with an anticipated completion by 2035. The current Jeju International Airport is crowded, as it was designed to service 26 million people but services “30 million, which is 4 million more than it was designed to handle.” The current desire of the existing Jeju International airport includes wanting to add more direct flights, nonstop to major cities including Tokyo, Osaka, Beijing, Shanghai and Taipei.
While the economy booms with foreign travel, residents suffer negative repercussions of Jeju tourism. “Most commercial facilities are owned by foreigners and major companies.” and in addition to increasing tourism, problems such as beach pollution, traffic, and overconsumption of underground water presents a problem. Residents are not profiting and do not profit from the booming business.
Residents and tourists alike love with the nature of the Island. It has three UNESCO World Heritage sites, is “packed with museums and theme parks and also has horses, mountains, lava tube caves, and waterfalls with clear blue ocean lapping its beaches.” The Haenyeo (Jeju female divers) harvest oysters, abalone, clams, seaweed and other marine life and their history are showcased at the island’s Haenyeo museum.
Due to extensive tourism the pollution of beaches has become a serious problem. The local government of Jeju ascribed to be carbon-free by 2030. “Nearly half of all-electric cars in South Korea are registered in Jeju” and the island takes pride of their small piece of paradise.
In addition to the aspirations of an additional airport and the expansion of tourism on the island, Jeju is home to a small technological hub. In 2005, the Jeju Science Park was created, a complex for technology companies and organizations. Since its implementation, it has attracted 117 IT and biotech companies and is home to the Daum Kakao Corporation headquarters.

Jeju Olle Trail Camping Thru-Hike Part Four: Route 13 to Route 18-1 제주 올레길
Read the full account and our food, camping and accommodation recommendations in our accompanying BLOG POST ???? ???? ????
A month walking and camping the Jeju Olle Trail in South Korea. In the final part of the series we finish the 425km Olle Trail, completing our circuit of Jeju Island and venturing to Chuja-do.
Our final stretch starts on Route 13, heading up the west and north coasts all the way back to Jeju City, before taking a ferry half-way back to the mainland to complete Route 18-1 on Chuja Island.
The highlight of Route 13 is undoubtedly Jeoji Oreum, where we decide to camp for the night and are treated to a spectacular sunset and sunrise. We tackle Route 14-1 and most of Route 14 in a mammoth day, the furthest we’ve ever walked! From the dense forest gotjawal and O’Sulloc green tea fields of Route 14-1 to the idyllic Geumneung Beach, it’s quite the day.
At Geumneung we camp by the beach, get up close with haenyeo (Jeju’s female free divers), cafe hop and enjoy a well earned rest day. Continuing on we wind our way around the coast to camp at picture-perfect Gwakji Beach. Route 15’s Handam Seaside Walkway stops us in our tracks numerous times and on Route 16 we tackle more oreums. Route 17 takes us past more beaches and coastal trails, finally making it back to the Ganse Lounge in Jeju City, a month after we started.
With just one Jeju Olle Trail route to go, we jump on the ferry to Chuja Island to complete Route 18-1. We toast our grand finale with our much loved makgeolli (fermented rice wine) and just like that, our Jeju Olle Adventure is over!

Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, which is 180m above sea level, erupted underwater in the ocean about 5,000 years ago,
which makes it a very rare case among the many craters in Jejudo Island.
A scene in the movie ‘Lee Chang-ho’s Baseball Team’ (directed by Lee Chang-ho) was filmed here.
Though people used to farm in the area, it is now a natural habitat for 200 types of vegetation such as silvergrass, vine, Pseudosasa japonica, and giant angelica as well as a natural habitat for a variety of wild animals.
