Kunqu Opera Staged in Suzhou's Kunqu Museum
China's Kunqu Opera Museum in the city of Suzhou in east China's Jiangsu Province held a series of summer activities recently, changing itself from a quiet narrator of art history to a performance stage and learning classroom.
One of the activities, the Kunqu Week, has been running for 11 years since 2005, through which many people have built a stronger connection with Kunqu, this traditional art form of fine literary style.
I feel closer with Kunqu through the performance, said one visitor at the museum.
It feels great to watch Kunqu performance in a small theater, said another visitor.
Visitors can also try on costumes and learn Kunqu performing skills from Mao Weizhi, a 71-year-old Kunqu artist who started a course at the museum recently.
I have had the idea of starting a class for a long time. The museum is very beautiful, but is too quiet. It houses many articles, but nothing is alive. There is no sound. So I made suggestions to the museum to recruit some students and teachers to open a class, which has been accepted by the museum, said Mao.
With a history of 600 years, Kunqu Opera was named a UNESCO oral and intangible heritage in 2001.
A unique synthesis of singing, dancing and acting, the art form has exerted a profound influence on musical theaters in China, including Peking Opera.

Handan Dream: Tang Xianzu's Kunqu opera graces the capital
Kunqu Opera is one of the oldest forms of opera still existing in China, with its origins dating back to the Song dynasty (960 - 1279). In 2001, Kunqu Opera was acknowledged as a masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. It was the first Chinese cultural heritage to gain such a recognition. This year, the art form is commemorating the 400th anniversary of the death of Tang Xianzu, a great Chinese playwright of the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). In Beijing, the Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe kicked off their world tour over the weekend with Tang's Handan Dream”, which is also known as Four Dreams in the Camellia Hall. Li Qiong has more.

Tsingtao Brewery museum, Beer street, May 4th square, International Sailing Centre, the longest bridge over the water Jiaozhou bay bridge, the stunning Mount Lao (Laoshan), beautiful temples, St Michaels Cathedral together with German architecture are some of the things you can see in Qingdao.
Unfortunately we didn't manage to see everything we wanted, even spending 7 days in Qingdao, as there's waaay too much to see!!
Or maybe we were just taking our time and enjoying it too much haha..
(Germany had a colony there at some point in history, the reason why there's German influence in Qingdao)
