Amazing Arunachal | Tawang | Arunachal Pradesh | Northeast India | Sela pass | Bomdila |
A trip to Tawang
Erstwhile Tawang District was a Sub-Division of West Kameng District till 5th October 1984. This district is situated in western most part of Arunachal Pradesh. The area of this district is approximately 2,172 Sq.km, bounded by Tibet (China) to the north, Bhutan to the south-west and Sela ranges separated from West Kament district in the east.
Tawang is a popular tourist destination thanks to the well-preserved Tawang Monastery. The Sela Pass rises steeply and is covered with snow for most of the year. Jang waterfall is a big tourist attraction.
Tawang district has a handicrafts centre that promotes the small-scale industries for local handicrafts.
Visitors to Tawang district require a special Inner Line Permit from the government which are available in Kolkata, Guwahati, Tezpur, and New Delhi. Most of the travel from the plains is on a steep hill road journey, crossing Sela Pass at 4,176 metres (13,701 ft). Tourists can travel to Tawang from Tezpur, Assam by road. Tezpur has direct flights from Kolkata. Guwahati, Assam, is 16 hours by road. In June 2008, a daily helicopter service from Guwahati was started by the Arunachal Pradesh government.
Road travel to Tawang from Tezpur, Assam, is by buses, private taxis and shared taxis. It is an arduous journey: most of the road is loose tarmac and gravel giving way to mud in many places. However, it is a scenic journey of nearly 12 hours, crossing Bomdila Pass 2,438 metres (8,000 feet), peaking at Sela Pass 4,176 metres (13,700 feet), Jaswant Garh and, finally, Tawang. Government buses often break down (usually on the way up) and passengers end up hitchhiking in private cars and taxis. En route, local food is available, especially meat and vegetarian momos and cream buns.
Tawang also hosted the 2nd International Tourism Mart in October 2013

Arunachal Pradesh is one of the 29 states of India and holds the distinction of being the northeastern-most state of the country. Arunachal Pradesh borders the states of Assam and Nagaland to the south, and shares international borders with Bhutan in the west, Myanmar in the east and is separated from China in the north by the disputed McMahon Line. Itanagar is the capital of the state.
A major part of the state is claimed by the Republic of China, and the People's Republic of China as the region of South Tibet. The major part of the state which is claimed by China, was temporarily occupied by Chinese forces during the 1962 war.
Land of the Dawn-Lit Mountains is the sobriquet for the state in Sanskrit; it is also known as the Orchid State of India or the Paradise of the Botanists. Geographically, it is the largest of the North-eastern states known as the Seven Sister States. As in other parts of Northeast India, the people native to the state trace their origins to the Tibeto-Burman people.

Markets of Bomdila sell everything from Kiwis, dried cheese to lentils
Markets of Bomdila in Arunachal Pradesh are a bit different from the rest of India. Street side vendors sell everything from lentils, Kiwi fruit, utensils to handicraft bags. All the items are neatly arranged and packed in polythene bags or packets of standard sizes of half a kg or one kg. Another unique aspect is that in Arunachal one comes across mostly women managing everything from shops to businesses.

Arunachal Pradesh Trip | Tawang, Bum La Pass, Jang Falls, Madhuri Lake | Dirang Monastery | Ziro????????
During summer in India, exactly June 2019, we traveled around Arunchal Pradesh and also Assam starting from Guwahati, Bomdila, Dirang, Tawang, Tezpur, Itanagar, Ziro, Sonapur and then back to Mumbai.
Nuranang Falls (also known as Bong Bong Falls or Jang Falls), some 100 metres high, is located in the Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh, India. It is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in this part of the country, yet is unknown to many travelers. It lies some 2 kilometres away from the town of Jang on the road connecting Tawang and Bomdila, so it is also known as the Jang Falls. There is a small hydel plant located near the base that generates electricity for local use.
The Bum La Pass is located about 37 km away from Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, at the Indo-China border above 15,200 ft above sea level. Visit by civilian tourist of India is permissible with permission from the Indian Army. The track is very treacherous, only SUVs advisable, and that too only on clear weather day with no snowfall or rainfall. The area includes route taken by the 14th Dalai Lama when he escaped China and reached India to take refuge. It is often covered with heavy snow throughout the year. It is one of the most off-beat passes in the world and is also referred to as the pass from where Dalai Lama entered India escaping from Tibet.
The Sangestar Tso Lake is also called as Madhuri Lake, which is located on the way from Tawang to Bum La Pass in Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh, near Indo-China border above 15,200 ft above sea level. Created by falling rocks, boulders and trees in an earthquake, There is a Sangestar Tso lake (lake is called Tso in Tibetan) that featured Madhuri Dixit (Bollywood actress) in the movie Koyla, as a result this lake is sometimes also called Madhuri lake. The lake is about 20 km from Tawang town, about 7 km beyond the bifurcation of road leading to Bum La Pass.
Dirang is a small riverside hamlet in Western Arunchal Pradesh and is situated at an altitude of around 8910 ft above sea level. Dirang is located in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, India on the southern face of the Himalayas. This area was historically a region of Tibet, but became a territory of India in 1959. Since then, many Tibetan refugees have relocated in the vicinity of Dirang. Local Indian schools teach in Hindi and English, not in Tibetan. Thupsung Dhargye Ling (TDL) is a temple in Dirang and learning institute for the study of Tibetan Buddhism by laypeople and monks, located in the Himalayan village of Dirang, India. The name, Thupsung Dhargye Ling was given by His Holiness, the Dalai Lama and means: Place of Flourishing of the Buddha's Speech.
Ziro is the census town in Lower Subansiri district in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. It has been a favourite town for World Heritage Site for a number of years now. In a meeting of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on 12 December 2002 it was shortlisted for inclusion in the Tentative List for further nomination to UNESCO for inscription in the World Heritage Site. The part of the town which is the centre of economic activities and where the administrative offices are located is called as Hapoli or locally known by the Apatanis as Hao-Polyang.
Ziro is around 115 km from the state capital Itanagar and takes approx 3 and a half hours via the improved Hoj-Potin road along NH229 and 150 km via the Assam route. Earlier the nearest railway station from Ziro was located at Naharlagun in Arunachal Pradesh near the Arunachal-Assam border which is around 100 km from Ziro. The nearest airport to the settlement is Lilabari, in North Lakhimpur district of Assam.

Wooden Gandhi, Tibetan rugs and Monpa rain cap in Tawang emporium
Hand crafted wooden artifacts, Tibetan rugs, Monpa rain cap and stoles being sold at the Craft Centre Emporium in Tawang, Arunachal.
The area of the district is approximately 2085 sq. km. bordered by Tibet in the North, Bhutan in the South-West and Sela ranges separate West Kameng district in the East. Elevations range between 6,000 to 22,000 feet (6,700 m), and inhabitants are found at lower altitude, where they enjoy a cool temperate climate.
Tawang is both historically and naturally endowed. It is located at a distance of 183 Kms from Bomdila and is situated at an altitude of 3500 metres above sea level. The natural beauty and solitude of Gudpi and Chong-Chugmi ranges, Tawang Chu River and Tawang valley are very mesmerizing. The inhabitants of the districts are all of Monpa tribes except Shyo village which is dominated by people of Tibetian origin.
There are two major religious festivals of the Monpas viz LOSAR and TORGYA. Both festivals are celebrated once annually. The LOSAR s celebrated to the commencement of New year. Every third year of Torgya, the festival of Dungyur is celebrated. Both Dungyur and Torgya festivals are celebrated in the premises of the Tawang Monastery with traditional gaiety and enthusiasm.
There are many beautiful glacial lakes in and around Tawang with crystal blue waters such as Sela lake, P.T.Tso lake, Sangetser lake, Banggachang lake and many more. These remain frozen in winter while in summer they become a haven for migratory birds.
