Hiking the Rimview trail
Hanging Garden Ranger-Guided Walking Tour
This ranger-guided hike leads you to a luxuriant Hanging Garden on the mesa high above the Colorado River and Lake Powell. Securely hidden by Jurassic Navajo sandstone, this seep spring quickly takes hostage every drop of rainwater it can absorb. Slowly it liberates this water over time to create a surprisingly lush plant and animal habitat that delights and surprises those who discover it.
Water sources in the desert are rare and often critically important for wildlife. Streams and springs support lush, green vegetation, creating a stark contrast to the dry surrounding desert landscape. Perhaps the most unusual form of spring-supported plant community on the Colorado Plateau is the hanging garden.

We spent a morning exploring a trail from Lee's Ferry – one the few places in hundreds of miles from which one can easily access the Colorado River from both sides. We hiked up to the crest where we were rewarded with fantastic views for miles around across the vast landscape.

Hiking around Lake Powell 2015
Hiking around Lake Powell in 2015.
Lake Powell is a reservoir on the Colorado River, straddling the border between Utah and Arizona (most of it, along with Rainbow Bridge, is in Utah). It is a major vacation spot that around 2 million people visit every year. It is the second largest man-made reservoir by maximum water capacity in the United States behind Lake Mead, storing 24,322,000 acre feet (3.0001×1010 m3) of water when full. However, due to high water withdrawals for human and agricultural consumption, and because of subsequent droughts in the area, Lake Powell is currently larger than Mead in terms of volume of water currently held, depth and surface area. Lake Powell was created by the flooding of Glen Canyon by the Glen Canyon Dam, which also led to the creation of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, a popular summer destination. The reservoir is named for explorer John Wesley Powell, a one-armed American Civil War veteran who explored the river via three wooden boats in 1869.
In 1972, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area was established. It is public land managed by the National Park Service, and available to the public for recreational purposes. It lies in parts of Garfield, Kane, and San Juan counties in southern Utah, and Coconino County in northern Arizona. The northern limits of the lake extend at least as far as the Hite Crossing Bridge. A map centered at the confluence of the Escalante River 37°17′22″N 110°52′20″W with the Colorado River gives a good view of the extent of the lake.

Hiking in Cathedral Wash, Vermilion Cliffs, AZ - Come and Join Me!
My name's Roxy, and I'm a free spirit who truly struggles with living in one place. I've been like that my whole life. Society can try to force us into living a certain way, but we're not all cut from the same cloth (thankfully), and being 'stuck' in one place for years or a lifetime, is impossible for some of us to embrace. That's why I live in a van. I love to see different wildlife, new horizons, meet new people, and experience new things. I photograph, write, and share on my blog and my webpage, TranquilLightPhotography.com/ Please visit, share, and sign up.
Paria Canyon - Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness Area
Nationally known for its beauty, the Paria Canyon has towering walls streaked with desert varnish, huge red rock amphitheaters, sandstone arches, wooded terraces, and hanging gardens. The 3,000-foot escarpment known as the Vermilion Cliffs dominates the remainder of the wilderness with its thick Navajo sandstone face, steep, boulder-strewn slopes, rugged arroyos and stark overall appearance. Some of the best slot canyon hiking opportunities on the Colorado Plateau are found here.

Bryce Canyon National Park - Sunrise to Sunset Point hike through Hoodoos
The Navajo Loop Trail descends from Sunset Point through the slot canyon of Wall Street, where 500 to 700-year-old Douglas Firs reach upward toward the sunlight at the top of the canyon. The Navajo Loop is the most popular trail in the park, and is often combined with the Queen's Garden Trail to form a longer loop that passes through the Queen's Garden and emerges onto the rim at Sunrise Point. From here two very scenic and easy strolls can be taken as part of the Rim Trail. A ½-mile walk to the north on a wheelchair accessible trail which takes you to Sunset Point. Walking ¾ of a mile to the south across gently rolling terrain, you arrive at Inspiration Point.
My exact route:
Start at Sunset Point - known as Queens Garden Trail
Quick stop at Queen Victoria
Continue Queens Garden Trail to Peeakaboo Loop.
Hike Peekaboo Loop counter clockwise
Head up Navajo Loop (known as all street.
Finish up at Sunset Point.
RimView Trail PageAZ
Page AZ has a great trail that loops around the city. Ride it in either direction, but my favorite way is out and back on the back side where the views are the best. This was taken in January 2014 to give you a flavor.
Hiking at Toadstools (Grand Staircase/Escalante)
Short trail in the Grand Staircase/Escalante Rimrocks area to a garden of toadstools, a geologic oddity resulting from eons of wind erosion. Great color contrasts between the red and white-silver sandstone.
