제주 항몽유적지(Hangmong (Anti-Mongolian) Historical Site)
National Historical Remains No. 396. This place has a special historical meaning as the special capital defense unit that strongly resisted the invasion of Mongolia until the last possible moment fought from here. It houses the Exhibition Hall, monument, and a unique mud fortress. Nearby is the Jangsu Spring which flowed from the footprints of General Kim Tong-jeong (but now can not be used as drinking water).
When the Goryeo Dynasty made peace with the Mongolian forces in February of the 11th year of King Wonjong (1270), the special capital defense unit of the Goryeo military opposed it and continued its anti- Mongolian resistance until the end. They moved to Jin Island in Jeolla Province and were defeated badly. The special capital defense unit then moved to Jeju Island, built the Hangpadu Fortress, and resisted for 2 more years. However, all of them were killed by the Mongolian forces in April of the 14th year of King Wonjong (1273).
The independent anti-Mongolian military resistance of the special capital defense unit was born out of the deeply patriotic belief in the necessity of defending against invaders. The commitment and tenacity of this defense unit embodies the best of the military.
The government designated 745 million won to repair the fortress and build the monument. The construction began on July 21, 1977 and was completed in June 1978.
[Artifacts/exhibition]
◈ Mud fortress: General Kim Tong-jeong built a 6 km long mud fortress in Hangpaduri. This was the base of the special capital defense unit that actively resisted the alliance between Goryeo and Mongolia.
◈ Jangsu Spring: It is medicinal water where General Kim Tong-jeong jumped and landed, leaving his footprints from which the spring gushed out.
◈ Gushi Spring: It was used as drinking water by the soldiers and the residents outside the fortress.
◈ Ongseong Spring: It was used by General Kim Tong-jeong and the noble class when the special capital defense unit stayed in Hangpaduri.
◈ Stone target with arrows: When the special capital defense unit did its archery training on Geuknak Peak, they used this stone as a target. It is a huge rock and legend has it that an arrow had been fixed in it until the 1940.
◈ Hinge: It is the cornerstone of the 4 fortress gates. When the special capital defense unit built the gate in Hangpaduri from steel, it may have been used as a founding frame.
◈ Pictures for record: 7 pictures
◈ Artifacts: 51 artifacts including roof-tile pieces, ceramics, cornerstones, and mortar.
