This is the first video in my series tracing the route of the old Great Malvern-Ashchurch Midland/LMS branch line. The line opened in 1864 and had intermediate stops at Malvern Wells (renamed Malvern Hanley Road in 1951), Upton-on-Severn, Ripple and Tewkesbury. The line between Malvern and Upton closed in 1952, but the Upton-Ashchurch section remained open to passengers until 1961, and to freight until 1963. This video shows the route between Malvern Hanley Road and Tewkesbury Junction, the site on Malvern Common where the Midland branch line joined the GWR's Worcester-Hereford railway (which is still in use today), before continuing up to Great Malvern station on a shared line. If you're desperate to see the last half-mile of the route, buy a very cheap return ticket from Malvern to Colwall and enjoy the rest from the comfort of the train!
The videos are filmed heading towards Malvern and so the parts will appear in reverse order, with Part One marking the end of the route, and so on. This is the very first video I have ever put together and was filmed using my old 720p camera. I did my best to walk as carefully as I could and to stabilise the video in post-production, but please excuse the occasional hiccough! The good news is that the newer videos will be done on my new camera in 1080p.
I've marked on the video where the old railway line is open to the public and where access is prohibited: I'm very grateful to the landowners who allowed me to use their property to film the walk, so please don't trespass trying to copy the route - watch my videos instead! Enjoy!
