The Hanseatic Museum in the heart of Bergen, Norway, is an excellent history museum located in several original wooden buildings that were offices and homes of the Hanseatic traders. The Hanseatic league was a major commercial network controlling Northern European maritime trade between 1400 and 1800. Hanseatic Museum is situated centrally on Bryggen in Bergen. The museum shows how the German merchants from The Hanseatic League lived and worked.From 1350 to 1750 these merchants traded stockfish and grains from their office in Bergen. The museum was opened in 1872 and has two trading houses, one facing the sea and one in back of the tenement. You may walk through this building from 1704, the only house on Bryggen which has kept its original interior.Walking for five minutes to the other side of Bryggen, you will find Schøtstuene next to St. Mary’s Church. These rooms were assembly halls for the Hanseatic merchants during winter time. Due to the danger of fire, Schøtstuene were placed separately behind the other office buildings. In winter hot meals were served here. The buildings were also used for teaching and as courtrooms, meeting rooms and party rooms. The museum consists of three assembly rooms and a kitchen.The entrance ticket is valid for both the Hanseatic Museum and Schøtstuene. In the period 1 May to 17 September you get the Museum shuttle buses between the Hanseatic Museum, Schøtstuene and Norwegian Fisheries Museum included in your ticket. The ticket includes admission to the 3 museums. The ticket can be purchased online and are valid for 48 hours. You can buy only an entrance ticket to the Hanseatic Museum after 14.45.

Hanseatic League Museum - Bergen, Norway
A view of the interior of the summer quarters for a member of the Hanseatic League, this particular building was built in 1702 I believe. This was after the League had ended but it was rebuilt after a major city fire in the old style.

En svipptur til Bergen for å feire eksamen overstått, og vi kunne ikke fått bedre vær!
Bergen bød på perfekt dag med vandretur innom bryggen, inn alle smug, og bort til tall ship Statsraad Lemkuhl for å prøve å komme ombord for en liten titt. Crewet var greie og lot oss komme ombord, og der møter vi en gammel bekjent fra yarden i Chaguramas, Trinidad!
Og vi fikk også en sniktitt på de berømte buekorpsene i Bergen, som samme helg skal feire buekorpsenes dag.

Our short visit to the ancient city of Bergen in Oct, 2011 . Founded in the 11th century, now Norway's 2nd largest city with 390,000 people. The old Hanseatic quarter of Bryggen is a must-see and a trip up Mt Fløyen via the Fløibanen funicular is also highly recommended. Beautiful city!
