Hapao & Batad Rice Terraces - Best Of the Philippines?
Today we're exploring more rice terraces in the Philippines: this time it's the turn of Hapao and Batad. But which will be the best?
After seeing the Banaue rice terraces, I couldn't wait to explore more of the Ifugao area of the Philippines. This area is unlike anywhere else and may just be the most underrated place in the Philippines!
We decided to visit Hapao, a village we knew little about, and the Batad rice terraces that everybody recommended. And I was impressed by both! They're very different, but each has its own charm. Which Philippines rice terraces would you rather visit?
BIG shout out to Jocelyn, not only for being the loveliest guide but also for insisting on carrying my bag all the way to the hot springs!

For 2,000 years, the high rice fields of the Ifugao have followed the contours of the mountains. The fruit of knowledge handed down from one generation to the next, and the expression of sacred traditions and a delicate social balance, they have helped to create a landscape of great beauty that expresses the harmony between humankind and the environment.

Hapao Village and Rice Terraces of Banuae, Philippines
Joey and his one, horse-power jeepney set off with us rattling around inside on the 16 kilometer, 10 mile ride that would take 90 minutes. When you see the road in this video you'll understand only too well what I'm talking about! The four of us hung on for dear life to avoid being flung off the seats while sending up fervent prayers that the jeepney wouldn't slide off the road in the mud.
The Hapao rice terraces are believed to be the place where the Ifuago began carving them over 3,000 years ago. These fields are irrigated by gravity to harness water from the forest above. (All the rain certainly didn't hurt either!) The village itself was a big miss. Everything is up-to-date and modern in the Philippines. The hoped for cultural, tribal experiences never did materialize.
The scenery is gorgeous though...
What to See in Downtown Banaue, Luzon, Philippines
Welcome to rainy, muddy Banaue, home of the famous rice terraces carved out of the mountains 3,000 years ago by the Ifugaos, the oldest mountain tribe in the area. The large Banaue Hotel & Youth Hostel is located in the center of Banaue and operated by the Philippine Government.
There are more than 11 different sightseeing options around the area and we had to make a decision which one to see. Finally, in our own one, horse-powered jeepney, a fast trip into downtown Banaue to see what was going on there and if there was anything to buy before heading to the Hapao Rice Terraces.
Banaue (Batad) Rice Terraces Adventure
Baguio to Batad Rice Terraces, Eighth Wonder of the World
The Banaue Rice Terraces (Filipino: Hagdan-hagdang Palayan ng Banawe) are 2,000-year-old terraces that were carved into the mountains of Ifugao in the Philippines by ancestors of the indigenous people. The Rice Terraces are commonly referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World. It is commonly thought that the terraces were built with minimal equipment, largely by hand. The terraces are located approximately 1500 meters (5000 ft) above sea level. They are fed by an ancient irrigation system from the rainforests above the terraces. It is said that if the steps were put end to end, it would encircle half the globe.
Locals to this day still plant rice and vegetables on the terraces, although more and more younger Ifugaos do not find farming appealing, often opting for the more lucrative hospitality industry generated by the terraces

Rice Terraces in Banaue - Pristine Philippines Vol.1
The Ifugao Rice Terraces in Banaue are sometimes called the Eighth Wonder of the World by Filipinos.
This is for good reason, as the terraces are an incredible and breathtaking site. It's pretty hard to wrap your head around the amount of work that must have went into building these by indigenous people with minimal equipment, largely by hand.
This film was shot at the Batad Rice Terraces and the Banaue Rice Terraces in Northern Luzon in the Philippines by Joerg Daiber.
