Friends Go On A Road Trip in Taiwan! (Taipei & Yilan) Vlog 13
My friends and I decided to go on a road trip out of Taipei to get some fresh air away from the lively city life. We initially decided to visit Taiwan to experience our first Formosa LGBT Pride Parade, but at the same time, indulge in what Taiwan has to offer - the culture, food, and amazing scenery.
Here is our vlog on our road trip to Yilan County where we experienced a bit more than what a standard tourist would get to experience when visiting Taiwan. We went hiking, tasted local food, went night shrimping, stayed in a cute Dear B&B hotel, went biking to a whiskey distillery, visited a temple, checked a lantern town and went back to Taipei to experience the Formosa Pride weekend.

✈️PARAGLIDING at Wanli, SCREWED UP THE LANDING... (萬里玩飛行傘)
A great spot for paragliding is Wanli on the North Coast of Taiwan. The Mustang Paragliding Club offers 5-min. flights from the coastal mountain to the beach of Green Bay. Great fun!

Travel in Taiwan (Jan./Feb. 2017)
I am standing on a cliff overlooking Green Bay, a scenic stretch of the north coast between the harbor city of Keelung and the highly popular Yehliu Geopark. Strapped to my back is a straggling pack, and a giant billowing canopy spanning four to five meters extends behind me. With nothing else but kneepads, a helmet, and my all-encompassing faith in the instructor I just met who is going to take me on a tandem flight, I'm going to run off that cliff and pray that the winds do not falter.
Paragliding has been a popular outdoor sport in Taiwan for some time now. The coastal mountains behind Green Bay, in New Taipei City’s rural Wanli District, receive plenty of sea wind, making them a perfect point of departure for flying enthusiasts. There are other locations in Taiwan suitable for paragliding as well, also offering great vistas – Puli in central Nantou County, Saijia in southern Pingtung County, the Luye Highland in southeastern Taitung County, and Wai’ao in eastern Yilan County. Wanli, however, perhaps offers the best conditions, with steady winds and marvelous coastal scenery.
With his trademark bandana, Mustang, the owner of Wanli's one and only Mustang Paragliding Club, greets all his visitors with a broad grin and a dry sense of humor. He has been flying here, and offering flights to others, for around thirty years now. After learning to paraglide in Taiwan, he took to the skies in many places around the world, even doing a flight over China's Great Wall on one occasion. He then saw an opportunity, he sheepishly admits, to make money in Taiwan while doing what he loves best, and set up a paragliding club in Wanli, first sharing the launch pad with other outfits, then buying the land it sits on to gain exclusive access.
He couldn’t have chosen a better spot. Wanli is situated less than an hour away from central Taipei by car – a bit longer by public transport (train to Keelung, then bus to Wanli) – and the unobstructed views you get from where the paragliders depart makes the site a tantalizing jumping-off point. Looking out, the azure water of the sea seemingly melds with the sky, beckoning even the most apprehensive to come closer.
Mustang is proud of his operation, and especially of the fact that he has made paragliding accessible to everyone:
My prices are the lowest around! It makes everyone happy, so I keep it cheap!
His honesty and sense of humor momentarily distracts me from my impending flight -- a distraction that the many nervous first-time flyers probably appreciate.

Upon arriving in Taipei, Joanne-Marie checks into the quaint, airline-themed Airline Inn ( in Ximending. It's convenient location makes it a very good choice for shopaholics and those who want to get a taste of Taipei's famous street foods.
Just across the road, the next stop was Vespa Ximending ( a flagship store that not only sells scooters, but is also home to Vespa enthusiasts all around Taipei. There's a 50s styled cafe, artworks and photographs reminiscent of days where Vespa first shot to fame in Italy. The outlet also sold memorabilia and various Vespa accessories like keychains, stickers, sunglasses, helmets, and nearly every item you can think of that screams Vespa Lifestyle.

Travel in Taiwan (2016, 1/2)
By Richard Saunders
A ride along the Pingxi Branch Railway Line, which runs through a picturesque valley about an hour from the Taipei City center by train, is a great way to spend a day of relaxing sightseeing, but it also provides easy access to some of northern Taiwan’s finest day walks. Hikers are truly spoilt for choice in this area: there’s enough to discover hereabouts to keep an explorer happy for a week of hikes or more. If there’s only time to do one of the easier routes, however, the choice is pretty clear. One of the finest short hikes within day-tripping distance of Taipei is the stunningly scenic Sandiaoling Waterfall Trail.
The Sandiaoling Waterfall Trail is named for three waterfalls, Hegu, Motian, and Pipa Cave, all three impressive, though the first can only be seen from a distance. It takes about two hours to get from Sandiaoling Railway Station to the last of the falls (about 2.5km). From there, most casual hikers will take the same route back, but for more adventurous types there are two alternative routes, one to Dahua, the next station on the Pingxi line, the other to Houtong, the station before Sandiaoling when coming from Taipei.
Getting to the trailhead is easy. Take a Local Train (NT$59 one way; about one hour) from Taipei Main Station to Sandiaoling, a tiny settlement picturesquely set in the densely wooded valley of the young Keelung River. Leaving the station, follow the tracks away from the Taipei direction towards a tunnel. Before the tunnel, the Pingxi line splits off from the main trunk line, which heads to the northeast coast. Take the pedestrian underpass under the railway, and then follow the path beside the Pingxi line. After walking about ten minutes, the tracks enter a small settlement, passing the pale-blue building of the abandoned village elementary school across the tracks. Cross the tracks (keeping a lookout for trains!) and you have reached the trailhead, which is right beside the school building. Walk up the concrete path, passing a few houses and following the steps, to reach the wooded hillside above.
After a short ascent the trail levels out, and then it’s an easy 30-minute walk through mixed woodland, including several attractive bamboo groves, to the first of the three waterfalls. Hegu Waterfall, 40 meters in height, plunges into a deep gorge below, and can be seen in the distance from a flat observation area to the left of the path.
Above Hegu Waterfall, the path joins the stream of the waterfalls for the first time, crosses a pair of small suspension bridges, and continues along the left bank of the stream, now through thick jungle. The trail becomes narrower, and is a little rough in places, with some slippery tree roots and small rocks to negotiate, but the scenery is beautiful. After 20 minutes the trail reaches the foot of Motian Waterfall, which falls well clear of the cliff face.
A small wooden viewing platform offers great views of the waterfall from below. More adventurous walkers can follow the trail a few meters further as it starts to climb out of the gorge, then turn right at a junction and traverse a short but muddy path that leads into the overhang, where it’s possible to get right behind the waterfall.
To continue the walk to the third fall, head back to the junction and turn right to continue along the main path, which climbs out of the gorge via a newly installed metal staircase. At the top, less than a hundred meters above the second fall, is Pipa Cave Waterfall, a slightly smaller version of its sister below, which leaps over an overhanging cliff of golden sandstone. Both waterfalls are perfect spots for a rest or a picnic lunch, although the upper fall is generally quieter on busy weekends.

East Taiwan - TOURIST DRIVING
Must-see sights from the Taiwan's East Coast, planned by the in law's (Taiwanese natives).
Highly Recommended Sites/Accommodations:
Chihpen, Hotel Royal (natural hot spring) -
Tianxiang/Taroko Gorge (if you made the trek to Taroko, I recommend spending a night at Tianxiang!) -
Luodong Airbnb (super unique experience) -
Luodong restaurant (this is a MUST and you won't find it on Tripadvisor) - - traditional 10 course dinner with a spin
If you're going to make this trek, renting a car is the way to go, as you won't be subject to public transit's schedules. However, if you're just going to Hualien/Taroko Gorge, there is a train that runs from Taipei to Hualien, and a good shuttle system that goes from the train station to Taroko. I saw many travelers taking this approach; however, I'd recommend renting a car in Taipei and making the drive yourself (the coastline is unreal).
December = winter = less humidity = less mosquitos!
Other unique experiences that we will check out next time:
Pick your own green onion (and make scalion pancake with it) -
swim with dolphins -
Music: Kanye West - Touch the Sky (lullaby)

Taipei (Taiwan)
I visited Taipei two times during my trip to Taiwan. The first one on my way to Hualien and the second one on my way back from Yilan. This video is the first time, coming from Taoyuan and heading to Hualien. Taipei is such a huge huge city, it's the capital of Taiwan, Republic of China, located in Northern Taiwan and settled in 1709 which original name was Formosa which means Beautiful Island and for the facts, this is such a BEAUTIFUL island!!!!Transportation in Taiwan is awesome, you can go anywhere you want with no delays and for a very cheap price. I do loved Taiwan! Good and cheap food, happy people, everything easy and accessible, clean and over all, a country keeper of their traditions and culture!

Explore Taiwan VLOG | GLASS FLOOR on the Maokong Gondola ????????
Day 6 exploring Taiwan! My friends and I took the Maokong gondola up all the way to the top of the mountain next to the Taipei Zoo.
If you make it up there, make sure to try the bomb pancakes It was sooo delicious!
The temple we visited was beautifully lit with red lanterns at night, it felt like a scene from a movie, I would definitely recommend hiking down instead of taking the gondola back down.
Please leave any comments or questions you have!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HOW TO GET THERE:
-The brown MRT line takes you to the Taipei Zoo (final stop), then take exit #2, it's about a 5-10 minute walk from the MRT station to the gondola.
--- Make sure to check the weather before you go, if it's too windy the rides may be cancelled.
--- You have the option to take a regular gondola or one with the glass bottom! I highly recommend the glass bottom, more thrilling:)
