Mussoorie: A Beautiful Hill Station in India
Natural Scenerio of Mussoorie
1. HAPPY VALLEY
Happy Valley is near the Indian Administrative Services Academy - Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration. Nestled in this valley is a Tibetan Monastery[1] with a clear view of Hathipaon. Happy Valley is located west of Mussoorie’s Dalai Hill from where the mountain ranges of Jaunpur and Nag-Tibba are visible. In October 18, 1929 Mahatma Gandhi addressed the European municipal councillors at Mussoorie. At that time he stayed at Birla House in Happy Valley.
2. TIBETAN BUDDHIST TEMPLE
At a distance of 2.5 km from Library Bus Stand, Happy Valley is a large Tibetan settlement in Mussoorie. It is also famous for housing IAS Academy, Tibetan temples and the Municipal Gardens. Happy Valley starts from the west side of Library Point and leads to the Cloud's End.
Happy Valley, also called as mini-Tibet is home to about 5000 Tibetan refugees. It is one of the top sightseeing place in Mussoorie. In 1959, when the 14th Dalai Lama took refuge in Mussoorie, many Tibetans came here and since then this valley has been serving as their home. Later the Tibetan government-in-exile moved to Dharamashala in Himachal Pradesh but left behind a strong community of Tibetans who have today become an integral part of the culture of Mussoorie.
The Buddhist Temple and Tibetan Homes Foundation continue the legacy if beautiful Tibetan culture in Mussoorie. In the year 1960, the Indian government opened up Central School for Tibetans for Tibetan children in Happy Valley which still remains as a reputed school. Mahapandit Rahul Sankrityayan, who is also known as the father of Hindi travel literature, lived with his family for some years in the present Central School's dispensary building.
The town is situated in lush green surroundings. Shedup Choephelling Temple is situated on the highest point of the valley atop a cliff. It was the 1st Tibetan shrine to be built in India and was consecrated by Dalai Lama. It is a major tourist attraction in Mussoorie and it is an astounding example of Tibetan architecture. This temple houses prayer wheels and innumerous idols of Lord Buddha. The meditation hall of the temple is carved with beautiful paintings on the walls, panels and on the ceiling. The temple provides a great panoramic view of the Benog Hill circuit.
3. JWALA DEVI TEMPLE
Jwala Devi Temple is situated on the top of the Benog Hills, which is located at an altitude of more than 2,100 m. Dotted with thick forests of pine and deodar, the path to the temple begins from Cloud’s End.
The temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga and has a stone idol in the inner sanctum. Besides devotees, the shrine also attracts nature lovers for its beautiful surroundings and pleasant atmosphere. Tourists can have a glimpse of Shivalik range on one side and the lush green Yamuna Valley on the other.
Valley of Dehradun as seen from Landour, Mussoorie, after a monsoon shower
Lovely sunset and clouds over the mountains to the west, over Benog and Bhadraj, as seen from Landour. Dehra dun can be seen clearly to the south of Mussoorie and the Shivalik hills to the south of Dehradun are clearly visible as well. The air is clear and crisp after a monsoon thunder-storm, clearing the sky and providing views far to the south. Rajaji National Park is clearly visible across the Dehra dun valley, along the Shivalik mountain range.
See Landour Bazaar (the small bazaarlet of Landour) and the busy city of Dehradun with the setting sun half covering the buildings with it's sunlight casting a shadow over the other half. You see the busy city from higher mountains from where they seem much less chaotic and pretty harmless.
A Whistling Thrush calls melodiously in the background as you can hear a few dogs barking in the distance.
