Port Ellen is a small town on the island of Islay, in Argyll, Scotland. The town is named after the wife of the founder, Frederick Campbell of Islay. Its previous name, Leòdamas, is derived from old Norse meaning Leòd's Harbour.
Port Ellen is built around Leodamais Bay, Islay's main deep water harbour. It is the largest town on Islay, only slightly larger than Bowmore and provides the main ferry connection between Islay and the mainland, at Kennacraig. The Port Ellen Distillery was first established in the 1820s and ceased production of Scotch whisky in 1983. The large malting continues to produce for the majority of the distilleries on Islay.
The area around Port Ellen has a variety of archaeological sites covering the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Age periods. There are standing stones at Kilbride, a fort at Borraichill Mor, several chambered cairns, and a chapel at Cill Tobar Lasrach. Nearby lie the ruined remains of the 14th-century Dunyvaig Castle, once a fortress of the MacDonald Lords of the Isles.

Breezy April day in Portnahaven and Port Wemyss, Islay
A breezy afternoon on Islay in April 2014, some nice waves were rolling in at the southern end of the Rhinns of Islay. In this video I've tried to capture views from both Portnahaven and Port Wemyss, taking in the Rhinns of Islay lighthouse as well. Watch out for the big waves breaking near Rhinns Point!

Seals in Portnahaven, Isle of Islay
One of the best places to watch seals on Islay is Portnahaven, where seals can often be seen in the bay just below the village. The footage for this video was shot on a grey and blustery day in April 2009 from the rocks below Shore Street on the corner to Queen Street. Two seals were on the Shore Street side of the bay while there were a few more on the King Street side.
Apologies for the occasional wind noise, as mentioned it was a fairly blustery day and I didn't have a wind blocker yet when filming this video. I hope you enjoy it nevertheless.
Scotland's Islands
Check your local public television station for this Rick Steves’ Europe episode or watch it on We'll begin on the tranquil Isle of Iona, where Christianity first reached the shores of Scotland. Then we'll visit another of the Inner Hebrides, road-tripping across the Isle of Skye, where we'll explore Iron Age forts, peat fields, a venerable distillery, thatched crofter huts, and the dramatic Trotternish Peninsula. Finally, we'll sail to Orkney — more Nordic than Celtic — with its stony remnants of a thriving Iron Age civilization and evocative reminders of the 20th-century wartime harbor at Scapa Flow.
