MH First World War Recruitment Day 9th August 2014
Hundreds of Harborough’s Saturday shoppers got a free gift with a difference at the weekend – a trip back in time.
A re-enactment of an Army recruitment day from the First World War staged by local history and drama enthusiasts took place in the town, enjoyed by an audience of at least 500 over the two shows.
It took place in The Square, the site of an original wartime recruitment day, and still recognisable 100 years on – except of course in 1914 there was no war memorial.
The idea of the 20-minute re-enactment was to bring Harborough’s history alive to modern Harborians.
“We wanted to bring home the tragic importance of the war,” explained the event’s writer/director, and secretary of Market Harborough Historical Society, Len Holden.
“And we wanted to show how the war related to people who lived in Market Harborough 100 years ago.”
The event began at 11am, repeated at midday, with an address from a British Army Recruitment sergeant major, urging local people to “swell the ranks of the British Army”.
Locals in period dress stepped up to volunteer to cheers from the audience and patriotic music by Harborough Band.
Then air cadets in period uniforms – made specially in India – read out extracts of letters home from the front line, revealing some of the horrors of the “war to end all wars”,
Fifty men had volunteered from one Harborough factory alone, the crowd heard – Symington’s Corset factory, part of which is The Symington Building where the district council is based.
The event ended with The Last Post, as a list of the Harborough men who died in the war was read out.
Jane Tugwell, volunteer co-ordinator of the Harborough Museum Trust, said: “We’ve been talking about a re-enactment event since last November, so it’s good to see it come together.”
“I’ve had lots of lovely, positive feedback from people” said event director Mr Holden, speaking later that day.
“They all seemed to feel it brought a bit of history alive to them.”

Tetbury Town In The Cotswolds Gloucestershire
Tetbury is a small town and civil parish within the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England. It lies on the site of an ancient hill fort, on which an Anglo-Saxon monastery was founded, probably by Ine of Wessex, in 681. The population of the parish was 5,250 in the 2001 census, increasing to 5,472 at the 2011 census.
During the Middle Ages, Tetbury became an important market for Cotswold wool and yarn. The Tetbury Woolsack Races, Founded 1972, is an annual competition where participants must carry a 60-pound (27 kg) sack of wool up and down a steep hill (Gumstool Hill). The Tetbury Woolsack Races take place on the late May Bank Holiday, the last Monday in May each year (27 May for 2013).
Notable buildings in the town include the Market House, built in 1655 and the late-eighteenth century Gothic revival parish church of St Mary the Virgin and St Mary Magdalene and much of the rest of the town centre, dating from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The Market House is a fine example of a Cotswold pillared market house and is still in use as a meeting place and market. Other attractions include the Police Bygones Museum. Chavenage House, Highgrove House and Westonbirt Arboretum lie just outside the town.
Tetbury has won five consecutive Gold awards in the Regional Heart of England in Bloom competition in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 and was category winner Best Small Town in 2008, 2009 and 2010. In 2010 Tetbury was Overall Winner of Heart of England in Bloom and won a Judges Discretionary Award for Community Achievement. Tetbury won Silver Gilt as a first-time entrant in the National Britain in Bloom Campaign in 2009 and a second Silver Gilt in Britain in Bloom in 2011.
